“Downtown LA's Worst Hotel”

Comfort Inn - Los Angeles / West 7th Street

1 of 5 stars
La Crosse, Wisconsin
Jul 24, 2008

Perhaps "Downtown LA's Worst Hotel" is a bit of an overstatement. From what the locals say, there are worse hotels, but Comfort Inn City Center is Downtown LA's Worst "Chain" Hotel. Suffice it to say that everything in all the negative reviews on this hotel is true, and then some. For example, the location is in the Mexican ghetto; room service turns off the air when you are not in your room; my room was often shorted of towels; the refrigerator barely cooled off the contents and had no visible control dial; I had ants in my room; I had cockroaches in my room; two out of the three ice machines were broken for more than half of my stay; the elevator has a few lights out, such as the up and down arrows; the water cooler in the breakfast area was broken and duct taped to avoid use; only one half of the toaster slots worked; the hotel ran out of plates at breakfast, even though I saw some readily available in the store right next door; and there was only salt, not pepper, provided at breakfast, causing me to buy and bring my own pepper each morning. All in all the staff was receptive to reluctantly listening to my complaints, and eventually responding after repeated requests. I would guess that they were as glad to see me go, as I was to be going.

Sometimes "saving a few bucks" initially seems like a good idea. However, after a close call with a mugger and being literally scared for my safety for the first, and hopefully last, time in my adult life I would recommend to be smart, learn from my mistake, and spend a few bucks in order to avoid risking your life!

“Would notgo again”

I wish I would have heeded the advice about the hotel. It all started on the wrong foot.i requested for non smoking was given smoking one with windows open to dispel any smell.Had to argue a lot to get another room, was told initially that it full but later on gave one seeing how disatisfied i was with their service.i was told initially that there is some problem with internet too but i guess they had kept the room that was on hold for me before infested with this problem.I must warn all travelers that if they need internet the should make them give you room with good signal strength.they have a common excuse of saying that we just got some problem with internet.the area around looks very unsafe even in day time.Downtown location looks tempting but believe me you have nothing in downtown and its better staying off in better neighbourhoods .if you havegals in ur group would def not recommend and if u are guys and just wanna place to take shelter may be or may be not.You simply can move in this area without vehicle and there is not any place nearby to eat or anything.Spend some extrabucks and stay somwhere else.If you are going to LA pay attention to safety of neighborhoods. And forgot to mention they charge 2$/day for parking and takes no responsibilty for any damage to your vehicle.Just when I arrived some gal grazed somebody's car and left and I doubt they did something as they can see what is happening on camera but front desk dint bother to come outside at all.

“Hotle ok but suspect location.”

Comfort Inn - Los Angeles / West 7th Street

The hotel itself was ok. A bit worn around the edges but clean and reasonably comfortable. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Problem was with the location. When we booked, we were told it is near the LA convention centre (which it was) and conveniant for the metro (whihc it was). What they failed to mention was that this hotel is in a very suspect part of Downtown. Very run down, shopkeepers only seemed to speak Spanish and there was a hostile atmosphere. A shopkeeper was shot across the street on our first night.

Had we been aware of the area, we would not have booked.

“Cockroaches and incompetent management”

Comfort Inn - Los Angeles / West 7th Street

1 of 5 stars
Chicago North Burbs

The pictures, as usual, show something quite different then what you will see when you arrive. While the hotel itself is pleasant to look at the neighborhood leaves something to be desired. When we booked the hotel we were surprised by what seemed like such a great price to be only three miles from the LA convention center.

Being from Chicago I might not have felt as insecure in this neighborhood as someone from Salt Lake City. To some the economically disadvantaged locals are more scary then the character I felt they brought to the place. Aside from the homeless begging (of which there were more near the convention center then in this neighborhood) we had no problems in the neighborhood.

The room was quite a different story. Shortly after check in we discovered the first cockroach. I called down to the desk and was told we could be moved to another room but it would be of lesser quality, which we found difficult to believe, and in close proximity. I left messages for the manager, then Wednesday, and twice a day until he called me on Saturday to inform me that he entered the room in my absence and without my permission. He had taken so long to return my call, he said, because he manages three properties. He saw nothing and would do nothing. Initially he told me that they have never had roaches in the hotel but later in the discussion mentioned that they were spot treating for roaches in another area of the hotel.

When we returned that night we found another roach which we killed and bagged to be sent to Comfort Inn's corprate office. I attempted to speak to the manager for the remainder of my stay with no success. One bright and shining star was a young desk clerk named Tawnee. She attentively listened and transcribed my thoughts into a binder the manager was supposed to review. She attempted to get my room rate reduced, was approved by her supervisor, and denied by the manager.

Only after I called Choice Hotels to begin the complaint process and under threat of sending the offending insect to Comfort Inn headquarters did my rate get reduced from $69.99 to $39.99.

Why didn't I just switch hotels? The town was booked except for rooms with rates around $150.00 more per night which I simply can't afford.

The location to the city and nearby sights is suitable, if you dont mind driving thru the dirty streets. I was a little intimidated by the location - this hotel is located within the hispanic community/barrios - something the web page neglects to inform travelers of. As a matter of fact, there is a project located right across the street. Upon check-In, the room we were 'given' was okay to the view but the smell was of urine covered up w carpet cleaner or air freshner. If you require security and you're traveling w children I would not recommend this Comfort Inn. I usually enjoy the reasonable pricing and amenities of the Comfort Inns but this is one I will surely gladly pass up on!!
