Perhaps "Downtown LA's Worst Hotel" is a bit of an overstatement. From what the locals say, there are worse hotels, but Comfort Inn City Center is Downtown LA's Worst "Chain" Hotel. Suffice it to say that everything in all the negative reviews on this hotel is true, and then some. For example, the location is in the Mexican ghetto; room service turns off the air when you are not in your room; my room was often shorted of towels; the refrigerator barely cooled off the contents and had no visible control dial; I had ants in my room; I had cockroaches in my room; two out of the three ice machines were broken for more than half of my stay; the elevator has a few lights out, such as the up and down arrows; the water cooler in the breakfast area was broken and duct taped to avoid use; only one half of the toaster slots worked; the hotel ran out of plates at breakfast, even though I saw some readily available in the store right next door; and there was only salt, not pepper, provided at breakfast, causing me to buy and bring my own pepper each morning. All in all the staff was receptive to reluctantly listening to my complaints, and eventually responding after repeated requests. I would guess that they were as glad to see me go, as I was to be going.
Sometimes "saving a few bucks" initially seems like a good idea. However, after a close call with a mugger and being literally scared for my safety for the first, and hopefully last, time in my adult life I would recommend to be smart, learn from my mistake, and spend a few bucks in order to avoid risking your life!
