Despite some shaky reviews here, I booked the Hollywood Roosevelt because I wanted something fun for a quick 1-night stay and didn't want to spend $400 on one of the 5-star hotels. It definitely served its purpose well.
The location is excellent, though quite the mobbed tourist scene on a summer weekend (as expected). The lobby area might be dark, but it has been very attractively renovated and captures the older feel of the building with a contemporary twist. The service throughout was friendly enough, never rude or snobby, though not of Four Seasons caliber.
My room was as expected --- small, rather dark, though clean and nicely renovated. The bathroom was absolutely tiny, which is often the case with hotels in older buildings, and water leaked from a gap between the glass partition at top of the tub and flooded the floor after a brief shower.
I had plans all evening and wasn't around to spend time at the Tropicana bar, pool ,or restaurants, though they all looked like a lot of fun.
The Roosevelt isn't the best hotel in L.A., but for the $179 I spent, I thought it represented a relatively good value compared to other options on the Westside. I'd definitely go back.
