Our visit to Orchha was for only one night. On arrival we were attended by the most miserable Receptionist. This was the end of the 'season' and the place seemed extremely quiet. The style of the buildings and the rooms is good, although the bed was somewhat high off the ground. However, the general spaciousness and furnishing of our bedroom was good. The walls and ceiling have been beautifully decorated to look like palace painting. The bathroom was large, but had a basic feeling. Before our guide arrived to show us the palaces we thought we would have a swim. Enquiries at Reception about pool towels were met with a response that towels were by the pool. They were not. On inspection, however, the pool was filthy and we decided to just sit out and have a drink instead. I had to go searching for someone to provide this. Whilst waiting for our drinks a helpful gardener came and put on the overhead fan on the terrace.
When we went out we asked if an e-mail we were expecting had arrived. 'No!'; could we exchange some money into smaller notes?, 'No!'. This did not create a good impression.
Dinner that night was quite pleasant, and we joined up with the only other guest at that time. Breakfast the next morning was better than we expected, with some good porridge, eggs, toast and juice. Have had worse. Waiters were helpful and friendly.
Perhaps this hotel functions more helpfully and efficiently in peak months. It is a great shame as Orchha is a beautiful, if somewhat sad, place and the concept of this hotel was good - it just does not make it somehow compared with other hotels in India of the same standard.
