My 20 year old son and I spent five days at the Playa Esmeralda. We loved every minute of our stay. This was my 6th visit to the DR, and possibly the best. The hotel is small (44 rooms) and very intimate, you quickly get to know the staff and other guests. We were the only American guests, there were a lot of Italians, other Europeans, and Dominicans.
The beach is just glorious, the water clear and warm. There is a reef offshore where the waves break so the swimming area by the beach is very calm. The palm trees allow you to choose shade or not, and there is always someone to bring you a lounge chair. There are very few touts here compared to other DR beaches I have been to, and the staff will quicky shoo away anyone who seems to bother you.The pool area is very pretty but people seem to favor the beach.
You can walk down the beach to the public area and experience small beach bars, food stands, etc. with lots of locals enjoying the beach, especially on the weekend.
Security at the hotel is excellent.
Landscaping around the hotel is lovely, everything neat as a pin, with beautiful flowering shrubs and palm trees. The dining room is very pleasant with some tables under cover and some out in the sun. The food was excellent, always very fresh, loads of fruits and salad ingredients. It is a combination of Italian and Dominican cooking, not haute cuisine, but more like home cooked food, and very delicious. There were many choices of fish, chicken, beef, grilled veggies and a new pasta dish each night (best carbonara I have ever had anywhere). Made to order omelets every morning.
The room was simple but adequate. It was a garden view room on the first floor with a nice balcony. The beds were good (not great, but sleepable). Everything was very clean and was tidied up daily. There was a small refrigerator and TV with lots of channels, but we seldom turned it on.
The staff are friendly and accomodating. This small hotel has two "animation" staff members whose job is to entertain you, get you to dance at night, get you to do water aerobics, etc. Miguel especially is hilariously funny. There was live entertainment two nights, one night a singer with keyboard and the next night an iinsane Michael Jackson tribute where the staff re-created the Thriller, Beat It and Billy Jean videos. I know it sounds crazy but everybody had fun. My son and I both felt that the "animation" got us to dance and interact more with other guests than we might have, and added to our experience.
Overall we felt we had had a Dominican experience, rather than a resort experience. This is a hotel frequented by locals, especially weekenders from Santo Domingo. It was casual and completely relaxed. And all of this, in high season, for $140 per night for two, including all food and drinks. We have stayed in Caribbean resorts that cost far more and were not as lovely. The atmosphere at Esmeralda is just perfect, the place is gorgeous, and the whole experience just wonderful.
