Treated to a weekend here by my partner to celebrate birthday so didn’t check any of previous reviews before staying. Once we had checked in I was initially a bit disconcerted by worn faded carpets on very narrow flights of stairs to upper floors but all this was forgotten when we opened the door to our room. It was easily the biggest room I have ever stayed in (also the most expensive!) with extremely comfortable king size bed, nicely furnished with sofa, table and chairs and tastefully decorated. En-suite bathroom very clean but bath a bit of a squeeze for two whilst supping champagne! Two windows looked out onto great views of the harbour, the Camel estuary and Rock across the water.
Breakfast taken both mornings downstairs sitting in window of Pescadou restaurant overlooking the harbour. Portions big with unlimited supply of tea, coffee, juices and toast from buffet section. Had pre-booked the Saturday night meal in the Pescadou which was just as well as no tables free on the night. This and other restaurants in town very busy at weekends. Food was superb washed down with reasonably priced wine.
Hotel also has large bar area with the full range of St Austell real ale (Tribute particularly good). Ate in there the other night of our stay. Typical pub fare but filling and not badly priced. Also tried out the other five pubs in town – liked them all for different reasons but common factor for me was that they all had real ale. Sharps Doom Bar takes some beating, locally brewed at Rock.
Padstow is nice little place to wander round. Would recommend speed-boat ride along Camel estuary – good value at 5.00 GBP – but be warned you may get very wet if you sit near the back!! Also National Lobster Hatchery interesting – adopted a couple of lobsters although appreciate may unwittingly end up eating them one day!! Didn’t do it this time but on previous occasion have cycled along Camel trail from Padstow to Wadebridge and beyond on the old railway line. On way home visited Bodmin Jail which is very interesting too.
Only slight moan is the early check out time (10.00 am) and car parking. In view of the price you are paying for the rooms it wouldn’t seem unreasonable to expect the hotel to have arranged some sort of concession in the car park opposite with the council (currently 6.00 GBP per 24 hours and difficult to get spaces on busy weekend days).
