“Enough room for a boat load of smugglers !!”

Old Custom House Inn

4 of 5 stars
Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom
Jun 27, 2008

Treated to a weekend here by my partner to celebrate birthday so didn’t check any of previous reviews before staying. Once we had checked in I was initially a bit disconcerted by worn faded carpets on very narrow flights of stairs to upper floors but all this was forgotten when we opened the door to our room. It was easily the biggest room I have ever stayed in (also the most expensive!) with extremely comfortable king size bed, nicely furnished with sofa, table and chairs and tastefully decorated. En-suite bathroom very clean but bath a bit of a squeeze for two whilst supping champagne! Two windows looked out onto great views of the harbour, the Camel estuary and Rock across the water.
Breakfast taken both mornings downstairs sitting in window of Pescadou restaurant overlooking the harbour. Portions big with unlimited supply of tea, coffee, juices and toast from buffet section. Had pre-booked the Saturday night meal in the Pescadou which was just as well as no tables free on the night. This and other restaurants in town very busy at weekends. Food was superb washed down with reasonably priced wine.
Hotel also has large bar area with the full range of St Austell real ale (Tribute particularly good). Ate in there the other night of our stay. Typical pub fare but filling and not badly priced. Also tried out the other five pubs in town – liked them all for different reasons but common factor for me was that they all had real ale. Sharps Doom Bar takes some beating, locally brewed at Rock.
Padstow is nice little place to wander round. Would recommend speed-boat ride along Camel estuary – good value at 5.00 GBP – but be warned you may get very wet if you sit near the back!! Also National Lobster Hatchery interesting – adopted a couple of lobsters although appreciate may unwittingly end up eating them one day!! Didn’t do it this time but on previous occasion have cycled along Camel trail from Padstow to Wadebridge and beyond on the old railway line. On way home visited Bodmin Jail which is very interesting too.
Only slight moan is the early check out time (10.00 am) and car parking. In view of the price you are paying for the rooms it wouldn’t seem unreasonable to expect the hotel to have arranged some sort of concession in the car park opposite with the council (currently 6.00 GBP per 24 hours and difficult to get spaces on busy weekend days).

“Not the best holiday experience ever”

Old Custom House Inn

West Sussex

After reading other reviews of this hotel it seems as though our stay had a particular jinx on it. The building and its situation are pleasant enough. We paid £125/night (plus £6/night to park the car) for a room with a 'sea view' (which looked out over the harbour rather than the sea) facing north. It never saw the sun and was freezing - I had to sleep in my socks (in June!). I say slept . . . the room was directly above the bar - noisy enough on the Friday night, but devastating on the Saturday with live music pounding through the floor. When we complained (politely) in the morning we were told sorry, we should have been warned about the live music when we booked (which we weren't). It did peter out around midnight, but we only managed to sleep until 6.30 when the people in the room above started to move around. The floor creaked so much it was like gunshots going off. Verdict: if you're going to stay here avoid room number 6 at all costs.

We had dinner at the Pescadou restaurant next door which is run by the hotel - not a bad meal, but marred by far too much salt and intrusively loud muzak. Breakfast - also served in the Pescadou - was a disappointingly DIY affair (standing in a queue at a conveyor-belt toaster isn't my idea of a good start to the day), accompanied this time by a high-volume local radio station. We'd booked three nights but decided two were plenty and went home early. Sorry, but this was our most disappointing experience in more than 30 years of hotelling in Britain.

    • Liked — Its external architecture - quite a pretty building.
    • Disliked — Lack of sound-proofing between floors.

“Birthday weekend to padstow”

Old Custom House Inn

4 of 5 stars
Farnborough, Hants
Jun 18, 2008

We stayed at the Old Custom Mill this past weekend - June 13th - 15th and had a wonderful stay.

I was wary after reading some reviews about noise from the bar and also a strange smell in the corridor. However we found the staff friendly and helpful allowing us to check in an hour or so early. The room was large in size with a double bed, a single bed and a sofa bed! We did not have a view from our room, but did have access to a paved patio - although again no views we did enjoy a morning coffee in the sun.(standing no seats)

The breakfast was excellent and nothing was too much trouble, we were able to mix and match the cooked items. We were 3 couples and they were very accommodating.

Working for a hotel group myslef, i was very pleased with the cleanliness of the rooms and indeed the public areas. The bed was very soft and comfortable and the towels were also very soft.

To say that anything was negative is hard. The only thing i would mention is that there are a number of different stair cases with several flights of stairs that are steep! Taking luggae in was not easy.

All in all a brilliant location for everything in Padstow, we dined at The seafood Restaurant and it was a lovely 6 minute stroll. Padstow is literally at your finger tips. Good value for money and you could not have asked for more.

“Right in the middle of Padstow”

Old Custom House Inn

Jun 11, 2008

My wife and I stayed for a night in the Spring. It's a brilliant location right in the middle of the fishing village. Our room looked out onto the inner harbour. All was very clean and comfortable.
We had dinner at Pescadou, the hotel's restaurant - both of us had sea bass which was lovely. After a relaxed stroll along the quay to the London Inn, we returned to the busy bar at the OCH for a night cap. All was great and we'll definitely go back one day.

“Padstow Weekend”

Old Custom House Inn

4 of 5 stars
Basingstoke
Oct 31, 2007

After reading the review already posted for the weekend we have just spent at Padstow I think we must have stayed in a different hotel ! Cannot recall any smell in the reception and found the receptionist to be pleasant although not overflowing with information.

Our room was a superior family suite on the top floor with a seaview and at £100 a night cheaper than a similar room with Rick Stein and was good value for money. The room was very large with a double bed and a single and had a nice seating area with a sofa and two chairs. The room was spacious and clean with a great view over the harbour and the bathroom was also very clean.

We had a long weekend at Padstow from Friday 26th til Monday 29th October. We took breakfast in the Pescadou each day and this was fine. Buffet selection for cereal, fruit and toast followed by an excellant hot breakfast cooked to order. On the Friday evening we did not have a dinner reservation and so decided to eat in the Pescadou as it was not busy. Food was great and well prepared and service was spot on.

The only downside to the stay was the Friday night entertainment in the pub below which was quite load. We had our ten year old daughter with us and so she was in bed by 10:00 and the entertainment did not finish until 10:30.

Overall, we had a good stay at the Custom House and would certainly use the hotel again if we could get the same room.
