“Miami in the Desert”

Mondrian Scottsdale

3 of 5 stars
Chicago, Illinois
Apr 21, 2008

This hotel is interesting in a lot of ways, if you're super picky then i can see how you would have problems with it but overall I don't think anything about the hotel was unexpected.

In contrast to others opinions, I thought that the layout and overall kitchiness of the decor was fine. Take it in stride, whatever, you have to expect it. You know there are butt lamps and sheep in the lobby, I'm not sure how you can be mad at it once you get there.

The rooms are an obvious half assed attempt to cover up the "motel" look, this is most obvious in the bathrooms which are teensy tiny, cracked and smudged floor tile, dingy shower. But overall the rooms werent that smallfor "chi chi hotel" standards and served our purpose just fine. Great mini bar.

The main reason to come here is the pool. The weather is just hot and amazing in Scottsdale and the pool is the perfect scene for it. On Saturday it was fun but not crazy, we met some people. It is definitely a party crows. Sunday had a live DJ and was a lot more obnoxious but I had a lot of fun people watching.
It was kind of like a Miami scene. I would say if you're not interested in loud music, barely there bathing suits and lots of booze stay away from this hotel. There was a Serenity Pool away from the main pool which I sat at in the early morning when everyone else was sleeping their hangovers away but during the day it didnt seem like anyone bothered with it.

The pool service was fine, the waitresses are all cute, white bikini clad, but I thought it was weird that at one point there were about 5 or 6 waitresses for the whole pooland it was taking a half hour to get our drinks.

The Skybar was fun at night. Didn't go to the other bar.

Overall I'd say that if you wanta fun, but also semi relaxing weekend away this is the place, but it is a total scene so if you mind that just don't bother.

Asia de Cuba was fine, think it'sa little weird to serve that style food "family style"but whatever, that's not the Mondrian's call.

Dear kimberlynyc120,
Thank you for joining us at Mondrian and taking the time to write a review! Our two pool areas do offer separate vibes and I am glad you were able to enjoy both of them. Our main pool contains the bar area and, as you experienced, is a bit more social; while the Serenity Pool is a calming, quiet atmosphere.

I am sorry you were not able to visit RedBar while you were with us, being such a fan of the lamps and sheep; I feel you would have enjoyed the décor! Thank you again for your comments. Please visit again soon!
Sincerely,
Devin

“This CANNOT be a Mondrian”

Mondrian Scottsdale

1 of 5 stars
New York, NY
Apr 16, 2008

To say that this hotel does not meet Mondrian standards is an understatement. To advertise it as same is highly misleading.

Yes, the website photos were well shot and flattering. Hyberbole abounds. Sadly, the property is not as it appears, and does not live up to its billing.

It is an older, two story, motel like property that has had some room updates -- mostly paint and furniture. North of $300 a night should provide better than an old, noisy window a/c unit, though. Bathrooms have some updated sinks and mirrors; showers are old and dingy. Rooms were, at best, weird. They covered all the hook-up amenties, including condoms next to the soap and shampoo, but the basics are sadly in need of attention.

The pool area was nice, in contrast. The effort must have gone into the public areas. Restaurant food was good, but $80 for breakfast for two (omelettes / coffee / juice) was absurd. Location was good, convenient to everything -- just know the hotel is located within / adjacent to a shopping mall.

There are dozens of lovely properties in Scottsdale; I've stayed at most four / five stars. Neither by price or amenity would I ever return to this. Sorry, but....

Caveat emptor.

Dear Alchemiss,
I sincerely apologize that the design of our hotel was not what you had expected. We offer a very original property unlike any other in Scottsdale. Efforts are made to ensure all areas of the hotel offer a unique experience that ours guests can enjoy.
I am pleased that you took pleasure in the pool areas and our accessibility to the Old Town Scottsdale area; the mall being located ½ mile north of our location. Please contact me directly to discuss your stay.
Thank you,
Devin

“Interesting Experience!”

Mondrian Scottsdale

4 of 5 stars
Portland, OR

This hotel has the best pool loungers around! Full size beds beside the pool---lots of pillows, shaded areas and/or full sun and some in the misters....there's no way you won't enjoy your pool/sun time here! The staff at this hotel is superb--friendly and always ready to help. I'm not really in the right demographic for this scene, but I still enjoyed it anyway. I'm over 55 years old and the general scene around the pool was young professionals with a higher percentage sporting major 'ink' but the scene was fun. (I later moved to the serenity pool for a quieter scene!) Our room was too nouveau for my taste---especially the fringe hanging from the counter top...but the beds were to die for---one of the most comfortable beds and linens I've had in years! If you go be sure to request a room NOT bordering on Indian School Rd---it is VERY noisy all night long!

Dear pdxmum,

Thanks for taking the time to post a review and thank you for staying with us! Our staff genuinely enjoys serving and doing the best we can to make sure you have a memorable stay. I am also pleased that you could visit both of our pools.

I do apologize for noise, hopefully you let us know and we were able to find a better alternative. In the future, I would recommend booking a superior or deluxe room so that you face toward the pools.

Best Regards,

Tim

“Hated it!!”

Mondrian Scottsdale

1 of 5 stars
W. Los Angeles, CA
Mar 23, 2008

We only lasted 20 minutes. When we checked in the staff was very nice, except there was a conflict with a special package we booked with their own reservation staff. That put aside, we went to our room. The room was a sad, small, dark room (it was about 3:30pm) that looked like a cheap motel room that they repainted and took a staple gun to add some sheer curtains to cover the ugly walls (complete with cottage cheese ceilings). The bathroom was also that of a motel, and for those prices, it was unacceptable. There were two beds and two chairs (one a plastic/acrylic chair)--not enough space to even sit down. The balcony was a tall, solid, cement wall with standing room only. When we complained, they happily moved us (they were VERY nice) to a suite. The suite was two crappy rooms (one with seating the other with a bed) with a door between them. Needless to say, we left and checked into another local hotel that was amazing (R.P.)

Dear LeoTW,
I am glad you appreciated the staff and the service they provided. I only wish you had stayed longer to see all that the Mondrian has to offer! We offer rooms which face every direction, offering more light in the morning or afternoon. Our Garden and Deluxe rooms have patio areas equipped with lounge chairs and umbrellas which add more square footage to the room. I am very sorry that the design of our rooms did not fit your taste. We pride ourselves in having a visually original property very different from any other.
Kind Regards,
Devin

“Top Notch Getaway!!!!”

Mondrian Scottsdale

5 of 5 stars
Chicago, IL
Mar 14, 2008

I was thouroughly impressed from the moment of arrival. Valet was immediate and attentive. Front desk staff was bright-eyed, informative, and fast check in. Had a room overlooking pool, which was a refreshing view, having escaped Southern California's smokey skies from the October fires. Service by the pool was excellent for food and drinks. We dined at Asia de Cuba for dinner one night and breakfast one morning, all excellent service and food. Red Bar and Sky Bar were easy choices to drink and hang with a cool mix of people. You can walk from the property out the front gates to old town Scottsdale and stroll the western boardwalk shops, location is right where you want to be in Scottsdale. Overall a great experience from this hotel and highly recommend it!
