Derwent House Boutique Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Northern Ireland

My partner and I booked Derwent from reviews on tripadvisor and so based on those we had high expectations. They were all surpassed. This was our first trip to South Africa and we stayed there for the first two days and final two days of our 16 day trip. During this time, we stayed in a variety of accommodation and Derwent delivered definitely the highest standard of service and the most fun. The hotel itself is lovely, well decorated, comfortable and relaxing. It wasn't warm enough to take advantage of the pool, but we made a dent in the honesty bar and the free cakes. The free provision of internet was handy for planning later parts of our trip. There was a good variety for breakfast - fresh fruits, yogurt, breads, cheeses, meats as well as cooked options to your taste.

The rooms were lovely, good facilities and a balcony, which in Summer I could certainly see myself sipping G&Ts on the terrace until the small hours. But what no doubt distinguished Derwent from other accommodation were Jo, Carol and the staff. They have achieved the delicate balance of being very helpful and responsive but not intrusive, of providing an intimate space but also privacy. They are a font of knowledge, particularly on restaurants and wines - they have obviously done a lot of personal research which is commendable. I have always hated that phrase - 'arrive as a guest, leave as a friend', it struck me as insincere but I've had to rethink.

We were lucky with the weather when in Cape Town and when we bid Carol and Jo farewell to head east, they were shortly heading north on their own holidays. We were not to know until our return visit that subsequent deluges in the Cape Town area meant cancelling their own holiday - had we known we would have taken them and their dogs with us.

“An Absolute Gem”

Derwent House Boutique Hotel

What a find! We've traveled fairly extensively and can honestly say this is the best B&B we've ever stayed in. The perfect start to a memorable South African vacation. The location is ideal, on a quiet street in the Kloof area, within walking distance (depending upon your tolerance for strolling) to the Cape Bowl and other sights. Our rooms (we traveled with three teenagers, who occupied the suite; my husband & I had another room) offered stunning views of table mountain and were impeccably furnished with comfort & style in mind. The decor has a lovely balance of S. African art (including drawings by Nelson Mandela) and modernity. The staff couldn't be more helpful and courteous, the breakfasts delicious, with eggs, pancakes & French toast, among other entrees, to order, in addition to the usual B&B offerings. And most of all, Carol & Jo are fabulous hosts and made us feel at home from the moment we stepped in the door. Their warmth and caring truly make Derwent House something special. We've been recommending it to everyone we know.

Fabulous boutique hotel in Cape Town. Location great. We stayed at Derwent House for the first three nights of a three week trip to Africa and we couldn't have been more pleased. Carol and Jo were impeccable hosts. The decor was wonderful, we especially loved the Mandela prints. We recommended Derwent House to everyone we met on the rest of our trip.

3/3 found this review helpful

This is a gem of a place. Centrally located, but in a tranquil area. Our room was very well appointed and the promised view of Table Mountain was there. The Management and staff were extremely friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble, an element that made our stay even more enjoyable. Recommendations for restaurants/activities were top notch and not found to be wanting. The staff know their stuff!

Derwent House is nothing short of an oasis in what can be a travelling/accommodation desert. We would not hesitate to stay there again during any future visits to this city.
