We enjoyed our stay at the Ecolodge. We felt as though we were at summer camp! The students in residence were the 'guides' the lodge used and they were very helpful. We went on a couple hikes with the students who pointed out specific fauna, flora, animals and insects. They seemed well versed in the lifestyle and environment of the valley, describing climate and wildlife habits that they had grown accustomed to experiencing. One morning they had arranged a guided tour for us in the Monteverde Reserve, which I highly recommend. It was the highlight of the trip. The howler monkeys, tarantula, quezel and sloth were all wonderful to view in their native habitat. The students then rode with and guided us to the Monteverde cheese factory and the the store/coffee shop. Yum!
The lodge was very friendly. My five yr old was very excited to have hot chocolate made for him by the kitchen staff. The meals were family style and delicious Tico fare. We are vegetarians and had plenty to eat, as we had notified them beforehand.
The lodge University students allowed us to walk to the local school with them to celebrate one of the last days before school vacation. My children enjoyed taking a swing at the pinata and seeing that the children there were also big Spongebob fans! We had brought them colored markers and candy canes for the holiday. The school funding is low, so donations are welcome. Just ask for suggestions at the Ecolodge when you make your reservation.
The room was comfortable, clean and big enough for the four of us. The shower water was cold, but that was a funny thing for us to see how fast we could shower!
We took a hike up the road one day to check out the area. There is a large waterfall nearby, but it is a difficult hike and we did not make it with the two kids in tow. The silence, wonder and serenity of the area is a vacation gem.
