We've discovered Costa Rica's best kept secret at La Terraza!!!
Instead of using a travel agent to book our trip my boyfriend and I decided to be brave and venture out on our own. I sent an email directly to La Terraza to make reservations and get some local details and was pleasantly surprised with an immediate response (despite the 2 hr time difference) with no language barrier. Definitely bring your English/Spanish dictionary for roaming about but it's not needed at La Terraza.
From the moment Carlos (bi-lingual) the driver picked us up from the airport until the time we left we felt like royalty. On our way to La Terraza Carlos instantly became the tour guide, pointing out things to do and places to go see. We got out and roamed Grecia to discover the best Tico restaurants to go back to later.
A welcome meal awaited us when we arrived even though it was past lunch time. (much needed after the airplane food- yuck) The grounds were absolutely breath taking! The B & B is truly the jewel of the Nile! The property is gated so we felt very secure wandering around at night and loved to unwind in the cabana'd hot tub listening to the water rush by from the stream on the property. Spend the extra few dollars for the apartment. It's well worth it. This was my first stay at a B&B where I actually had a full kitchen at my disposal. All the rooms overlook the lush gardens. The staff keeps the property immaculate and this comment is coming from a neat freak that borders on OCD. (Yes I had my own sheets and towels in my luggage lol which I didn't end up using btw)
Our original intent was to spend the first and last leg of our trip at La Terraza but decided to use it as home base after such wonderful customer service.
We hired Carlos as our personal guide for 2 days of our stay to go on day trips to Poas and Arenal. (It's good manners to feed your driver in addition to the traditional tip) Jeanetta custom tailored our excursions based on what we wanted to do to maximize both our time and budget. This enabled us to completely immerse ourselves in the local culture and find all the "best" spots. He took us on scenic routes to get the best views and didn’t mind stopping for all of our picture and video taking. Day 1- hiking along Volcan Poas (bring long sleeves because it’s a bit chilly), La Paz Waterfall gardens, then we ended the day with white water rafting on the Sarapiqui River (bring a change of clothes because you will get wet. La Terraza provides towels) Day 2- Shopping in Sarchi, zip lining in Arenal (an adrenaline rush) and winding down with the Bali hot springs. This was definitely preferable to renting a car after seeing how the locals drive up and down the steep winding roads. (Bring your own trail mix, Cliff bars, etc for hiking.... not something you can really pick up in Costa Rica.) .
La Terraza is about a 15-20 min walk from downtown Grecia so a taxi is not really needed unless it's raining or you're dressed to the nines for dinner.
Whether we had an American or Tico breakfast it was plenty to get us on our way, starting with a wide selection of fruit and organic coffee all the way down to visiting with Charles and Jeanetta (the owners). Breakfast is cooked to order when we are ready and not come and get it while it's hot. lol
Bring your lap top, there are internet connections in each room (Ethernet cords provided) as well as wireless service if you feel like sitting out on the patio.
Include La Terraza on your romantic getaway to Costa Rica, we're already planning our next trip.
