“Not as bad as its made out to be”

After reading all the reviews I was very reluctant to book the Gordon House Hotel, but there really wasn't much left when I booked. I emailed the hotel and requested a room on the 4th floor (Scandanivan theme), which they did.

Ok I could still hear some noise from the disco but this was less than the noise from a typical Mumbai street. Take ear plugs if your a light sleeper.

I found the rooms well fitted, clean and had no real problems with the place, afte all its in India nothing is perfect here!.

“Probably our best hotel in India”

The Gordon House Hotel

4 of 5 stars

I would give this a 5 but am mindful about those who had a room near the disco. This was the first hotel upon landing in India for a week which went: Gordon House (Mumbai) --> Overnight train --> Howard Park Plaza (Agra) --> Avanta (Delhi) --> Yatri (Delhi).

The first impression is one of modern chic and unusually the reception area is found on the open plan second floor where we were greeted by an efficient and pleasant young woman who warned us of any disco. The room we had on the top floor was clean and more than adequate and commensurate with our budget (GBP100).

The most pleasant part of the experience was the very clean, affordable and varied cafe/restaurant associated with the hotel on the ground floor. They do an "eat as much as you can" Chinese buffet as well as a Chinese a-la-carte menu which seems to be frequented by the Mumbai high society set locals as well as tourists and ex pats.

The staff didn't try to sell us products or services beyond our needs and when they had a chance to get us to stay another night, instead offered us advice on obtaining a ticket for an overnight train to Agra for immediate departure the following day.

    • Liked — Attached restaurant, non-pushy staff overall look and feel
    • Disliked — Probably the disco - worth checking where you are when booking. Top floor best

The Gordon House Hotel

Oct 15, 2007

I booked into the Gordon House Hotel for the last night of my honeymoon. I had heard and read some good things so thought that I would go with it. There was not one bad thing it was a collection.
When you enter the hotel it is lovely all clean and welcoming - as it should be for the price that you are paying. The rooms on the other hand are in need of a revamp - they just didn't feel all that clean - dust on the skirting boards, when you opened the wardrobe the smell was stale - there is no way you would hang anything in it. Then when I got on the bed there was a spring actually sticking through the matress. The bathroom was in the same state - the window was flithy and I am not sure how clean I did get when I ventured into the shower. This was coupled with grubby towels.
We decided to order room service - I know that when you are in another country you accept language differences etc but when I pay this much for a facility I do expect them to get my order correct. When the food arrived it was wrong and when I said that to the waiter he argued that I was wrong! Eventually he took the meal away - when it came back it was correct but everything else on the plate was cold as they had not remade the whole meal - they hadn't even re heated it - so we ended up not eating the meal.

I went to complain to the front desk and the lady may as well have ignored me! She took little notice of what I was saying. She was just quite rude.

I am sure when the hotel opened it was a cool boutique venue but now it is tired and in need of redecoration. I would not recomend this hotel.

Property as worn out as its theme, this hotel is a ripoff, considering what it actually delivers: Mildewed bathrooms and plain, unimpressive rooms. The point of staying in a boutique hotel is personal service, but with the exception of the concierge desk, the staff is sloppy at best, and the front desk is more interested in charging you for every little thing than making you feel welcome. At this price level, the Intercontinental and the Hilton offer much nicer rooms, views and service.

I would advise against staying at this hotel if you wish to sleep. Although the hotel is ideally suited to explore the colaba area, the existence of Polly Esthers Night Club in the basement makes sleep inpossible. Our groups bedrooms were two floors above the nightclub but we were still able to hear the music and feel the vbrations through the floor. Management were unable or unwilling to help and it was clear that they were used to a barrage of complaints about the noise.Do not be fooled by an offer to give you a room away from the noise....they do not exist!
