“Incredible”

Well I can honestly say that I have never seen anything quite so spectacular!

My friend and I were on a two week trip to Brazil we had 2 nights at Iguaçu.

We arrived mid afternoon and visited the Bird Sanctuary it was just brilliant, I've always loved birds since I was little so I really enjoyed our time there. They've done a brilliant job with the habitat. I have never been in such close proximity to a Toucan they are so photogenic and curious. I sat on one of the railings and one flew down to keep me company. We then went to our hotel Iguaçu Golf Club (not the best place to stay! too much like a British golf club dead quiet and incredibly boring!).

The next day bright and early we went to the Brazilian side of the falls. On the way we hopped on a helicopter and flew over the falls breathtaking! We then went and spent the whole day walking along the pathways by the falls and taking loads of photos. From this side you get the best views of the falls as most of them are on the Argentinian side. Although it's a major tourist attraction it doesn't seem spoilt in the way that many other attractions have been - maybe it's because the masses haven't started invading yet from the UK!

We then went on the river in a boat and that in itself is an experience - be warned wear lightweight clothes which drip dry quickly! Despite our best efforts we got soaked right through to the skin!!! Exhilarating!

On day two we went by coach over to Argentinian side of the falls and they really have got this tourist lark sussed out, no massive queues, lots of information and everything well signposted. Some lovely walks laid out for you to make the most of the place. On the Argentinian side you can really appreciate the magnitude of the falls.

You catch a little train through the wooded area and then you have to walk about half a mile along specially laid out walkways right across the top of the falls and by far the most spectacular view is when you stand right over the Devil’s Throat (the bit where the falls meet and crash down).

I can’t really say much more the photos will hopefully speak for themselves.

We flew with TAM Airline from Sao Paulo to Foz da Iguassu and toured the area. View from plane incredible. The falls are spectacular with the new modern information centre a great lead in to the bus ride to the falls. Views across to Argentina are magnificent and the roar of the falls is tremendous. The Devils Mouth is enormous and must be viewed by taking the elevator down to walk along walkways. Fantastic photo opportunities. The nearby Bird Park is a must see - the Toucans have go to be seen up close to be believed - they are magnificent. Hired a car and our cousin drove us across into Paraguay which was a real experience, though a bit scarey as it was market day. Also went across border into Argentina and visited the site of The Three Border Markers with night views of Brazil and Paraguay. Also visited the Brazilian marker as well as a must visit to the huge hydro-electric scheme, Itapu - free movie presentation and bus tour across dam.

“One of the two GREAT waterfalls”

Iguacu Falls

It is STUNNING! It totally exceeds Niagara! Just beautiful to see stretch after stretch of beautiful waterfalls with all that greenery!

be greeted by 275 falls and catarcts, and the Garganto Diablo is amazing! Just alone it is bigger than the Horseshoe falls in Niagara! and the walkways around Iguazu make viewing it a pleasure!

On a global stage, Iguazu is not as impressive as Victoria falls as a single water fall (the Victoria falls let more water out, and if you go in the high season it is one single curtain of water more than a mile wide and over three hundred feet high!) but I think it is a close second!

It is also easier to view than Victoria, because it is divided into much smaller (though NOT small!) manageable 'chunks' - with breaks in the waterfalls all over the place, which makes it great and much easier (though not easy) to absorb than the immensity of Victoria.

It is one of the world's two incredible falls - in my book, only Victoria beats it - and it is certainly one of the world's wonders! Amazing!

“You must see both sides - Can be done in one day”

We went first to the Brazil side by taking a bus from downtown for about US$1.50. When you arrive walk past anyone that approaches you for a tour, they are sales people. The folks with the real info sit behind the info desk.

We were done on the Brazil side about 1:30p and managed to catch a public bus to the crossroads, transfer to an Argentinean bus to cross the border, got thru border inspection, transferred in Puerto Iguazu, Argentina to another bus to go the national park and still managed to arrive before the final train left for the Devil's Throat. (When we were there the last train was at 4:30pm)

You have to make the effort to see the Devil's Throat. It's so much water, it’s indescribable. I felt certain that they must turn the falls off at night after everyone leaves because it’s inconceivable that that quantity of water could go on and on for thousands of years.

“Just Amazing!”

I first "saw" the Iguasu Falls at the beginning of the 1970's film, The Mission. So I knew that it was a biggie. However, the actuality is just amazing. Longer and more dramatic than either Vic Falls or Niagara, I rate this after the Grand Canyon as Planet Earth's showpiece. 3 km of waterfall, 275 individual cataracts, a third on the Brazilian side, two thirds on the Argentinian side.
You can either stay in the Park or outside. Each country has one hotel in their Park and each country has a township with heaps of hotels outside. I think if you can do it,cos of course it's more expensive, then you want to be in! Argentina's Sheraton is a concrete monstrosity (it's said that on the opening day there was hardly any water in the falls, whatever god you believe in not appreciating the blot on "his" landscape either!)but like all Sheraton's it's clean, food is good and beds are great. Ask for a Falls view room when booking. The Brazilian Colonial Hotel das Cataracts couldn't be more different, but as other reviewers have said, it needs an upgrade. Whichever hotel you choose, you need to book ages in advance, and you need to bear in mind that the hotel is secondary to the Falls and that you're there for two nights max.
Wherever you choose to stay, you do need to do both sides of the Falls. No point in going all that way and not being comprehensive. Go when the Falls are at their highest spate...we went November...and then take the wonderful walkways right up to the Falls. Niagara Falls are totally over commercialised, Victoria Falls don't even have a railing between you and the abyss, Iguasu is a happy medium.
The Argentinian side is gentler and longer with an upper and a lower pathway. The top of the cascades are crossed by wooden walkways, surreal as the water thunders beneath you and parrots and toucans fly over head. The lower pathway takes you to the foot of one of the main falls....great place for wet t-shirt spotting! The pathways are gentle enough and start in the gardens of the Sheraton and take about an hour's gentle walking / photographing. You can't but take photos with rainbows! There is a small train service that takes you out to a point near the bank which then has a walkway across the river to opposite the main Brazilian Fall (see below) but the floods in October had washed that away and so we couldn't, sadly, do it.
The Brazilian walkway goes from the gardens of the Hotel das Cataracts, zigzagging down the cliffside to the bottom of the Falls...the power of the water here is amazing and the main fall, La Gargantua du Diable (The Devil's Throat) is something else. At the end of the walkway here, there are two lifts to take you back up to the level of the hotel gardens - via, of course, the inevitable gift shop.(Brazil is far more expensive to visit and stay than Argentina) All these walkways do mean that anyone even with difficulty in walking can see the Falls really close up. If you're dithering about going whilst in South America..don't. A five star detour.
