“Austin does sushi *much* better than this place”

At dinner last night, there were five people. One ordered a chicken teriyaki dinner, one ordered two large sushi rolls, and the remaining three ordered assorted pieces of nigiri sushi. The dishes associated with the chicken came quickly, and the rolls arrived after five more minutes. One of the diners received her nigiri pieces after another 10 minutes, and it took 20 minutes for the rest to be delivered. This is terrible service, and there wasn't even an apology. When we asked when we would get the rest of our orders, the waitress told us that it takes longer to get the nigiri because people sitting at the sushi bar have first call.

She should have told us that when we were placing our orders. In addition, food orders should be arranged so that all diners receive their meals at the same time unless the table requests otherwise.

The chicken was dry and fairly flavorless. The rolls were good, but the nigiri was only OK. Only the more ordinary items were available, and they weren't especially well cut. I'd definitely try Musashino or Koreana in north Austin rather than Sushi Sake.

“plain taste, bad service, but very expensive”

It is just an average japanese restaurant in town. nothing to be excited about. the food is average, the interior is out dated, and the service is below average. but the price is very expensive for what they serve. The fish is fresh but taste is just plain, boring. It is not a japanese-owned & run restaurant, so do not expect to get real sushi there.

Average to below-average sushi. Move the damn boxes and clutter off the bar, it's not what I want to see when I walk into a restaurant

“Fairly typical American sushi restaurant”

Sushi Sake is medium-sized sushi bar/restaurant. There are no Japanese behind the sushi bar, do not expect traditional Japanese sushi manners and habits. As is typical of American sushi bars, the staff knows two words of Japanese, welcome and goodbye, and no Japanese sushi traditions.

On the other hand, the service is excellent and the fish is fresh. Rarely, some real gourmet delights such as toro, uni, mirugai will be available. Unfortunately, the one time the author had the mirugai it had already died. More widely available fish were excellent however. This author is prepared to overlook the lack of a traditional Japanese experience for fresh fish and efficient service, especially in a steak town like Austin.

The bar is stocked with several excellent - and expensive - sakes. Treat yourself to one of the better bottles of sake and forget the cheap stuff.
