Here is an review of another hotel, which one should mind. The Renaisance in Makati, Manila.
Maybe it was just an unlucky stay, but there were some incidents that should not have happened. Starting with the rooms, which are clearly below all standards in terms of cleanliness and smell (similar like a public toilet), it continuous with the services of the staff. One example? Here it comes. I gave my shirts to dry cleaning. I chose dry cleaning, because the fabrics, which might be a bit sensitive. When they came back, they looked like they have been washed, and worse, one shirt did not appreciate the treatment. At at least 10 spots, the fabric has been destroyed and the treats came of the main fabric. Obviously, I did complain. The reaction was: “Sir, no problem, this is just a shirt”. Of course did I ask for some kind of reparation. I was then offered to get 1000 points to my Starwood member card. Since they did not want to pay for the shirt (although they state in the general terms and conditions that they would) I finally accepted the offer as an apology to what has happened, if I get back my shirt. Deal! Only that they kept the shirt. I assume a luck bastard in the laundry wears now my 80 dollar shirt and I am still waiting for the credit of 1000 Starwood points.
My two days stay was full with similar experiences. So when I finally checked out – I was puzzled again. First of all – the price was much higher than expected. USD 140 for Sunday, USD 160 for Monday. Different days – different rates I was told. The rates were +++, i.e. USD 30 for the breakfast (remember, we talking about Manila – The Philippines), 10% Service charge and some VAT. The lift to and from the airport was accounted with USD 70 each (a 20 minutes ride) and last but not least the exchange rate. All the prices are indicated in USD, what they do is: They calculate at a fictive rate of 51 to the USD instead of the official 47 / 48, which makes everything again more expensive. Since I always carry USD, I insisted in paying cash. This was fortunately possible but only after recalculating the prices so that the value becomes the same (USD 140 / 48 * 51, and so on). The two night stay including laundry and lifts took me back USD 500.
Not too bad for the quality of three star hotel, is it?
