G Hotel is a new hotel located in Gurney Drive Penang. The location of this hotel is absolutely splendid; i.e. situated directly next to a shopping centre (Gurney Plaza) with many eateries, as well as circa 3 minutes walking distance to the Gurney Hawker Centre.
However, we had a very bad check-in experience on the afternoon of 18th February 2008; not only our rooms request were not properly put up but the check-in process took more than 20 minutes when there is practically no other guests checking in at that point of time.
Upon entering our room (Room No. 411), there seems a little damage on the door lock, which explains why it was so difficult to push through the door when closing and opening. There was a piece of towel soaked wet at the entrance to the bathroom, which we realized was to cover up the wet carpet due to water leakage. The rooms had many sliding cabinets but the maintenance was very poor, not forgetting the amount of dust they have on them. I thought they ought to be wipe clean at all times.
It was very disappointing to note these flaws and damages since G Hotel is a new hotel; if I remember correctly, it was probably only 2-3 years old.
We hosted a buffet dinner for our guests (20 pax) on the same night at G Cafe but despite having the dinner reservation made one week prior, the booking was not stated in the restaurant list. Thank goodness, I got the name of the person who took my reservation, but he claimed he was not working on the day which I called to make the reservation. Strange!
The buffet dinner was our saddest experience. The food quality was bad! The seafood was not fresh, and there seems no variety even though Sunday night was supposed to be International Buffet theme. The shrimps, salmon, oyster and mussels were poor in quality and lack of freshness. Even the noodles were tasteless. It was indeed a disappointment for us, since we have chose to host our CNY dinner at this hotel.
The only consolation we received at G Cafe was a recommendation of their freshly brewed coffee by a waiter named Christopher. That was probably the best cup of coffee we have throughout the entire meal.
After dinner, we had chats at the lobby. Unfortunately, though the lobby seems like a comfortable place with plenty chairs and sofas, but there were just too many mosquitoes. Staffs do not seem to care even though we were busy hitting / killing these mosquitoes. We could not sight any mosquito coil put up to overcome this problem.
Our bad experience does not end here!
The next morning, we could not enter G Cafe for our breakfast in which was included in our room rates. The staff at G Cafe claimed that our room does not include breakfast. Only upon much hassle and checking by the said staff with the front desk, they found mistakes and allowed us into the cafe for the poorly served breakfast.
Because we were not happy with the breakfast as well as the embarrassment we received for not been able to have our breakfast, we informed front office to cancel our breakfast the next morning. However, when we check-out the next day, breakfast charges were included into our bill for the breakfast we did not have. Only after much hassle, the amount was taken out, and the entire checking out process took no less than 30 minutes!
Need I say more, for such a new hotel in such a perfect location; all else seems to fail from front desk, room quality, services to F&B. I think the Management need to look into the mentioned aspects immediately to ensure quality before losing more hotel guest like ourselves.
We submitted our feedback, and got a reply from the General Manager, but damages had been made, and we felt a BIG WASTE for such a nicely located and named hotel.
