“Absolutely Below Expectations!”

G Hotel

1 of 5 stars
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Feb 22, 2008

G Hotel is a new hotel located in Gurney Drive Penang. The location of this hotel is absolutely splendid; i.e. situated directly next to a shopping centre (Gurney Plaza) with many eateries, as well as circa 3 minutes walking distance to the Gurney Hawker Centre.

However, we had a very bad check-in experience on the afternoon of 18th February 2008; not only our rooms request were not properly put up but the check-in process took more than 20 minutes when there is practically no other guests checking in at that point of time.

Upon entering our room (Room No. 411), there seems a little damage on the door lock, which explains why it was so difficult to push through the door when closing and opening. There was a piece of towel soaked wet at the entrance to the bathroom, which we realized was to cover up the wet carpet due to water leakage. The rooms had many sliding cabinets but the maintenance was very poor, not forgetting the amount of dust they have on them. I thought they ought to be wipe clean at all times.

It was very disappointing to note these flaws and damages since G Hotel is a new hotel; if I remember correctly, it was probably only 2-3 years old.

We hosted a buffet dinner for our guests (20 pax) on the same night at G Cafe but despite having the dinner reservation made one week prior, the booking was not stated in the restaurant list. Thank goodness, I got the name of the person who took my reservation, but he claimed he was not working on the day which I called to make the reservation. Strange!

The buffet dinner was our saddest experience. The food quality was bad! The seafood was not fresh, and there seems no variety even though Sunday night was supposed to be International Buffet theme. The shrimps, salmon, oyster and mussels were poor in quality and lack of freshness. Even the noodles were tasteless. It was indeed a disappointment for us, since we have chose to host our CNY dinner at this hotel.

The only consolation we received at G Cafe was a recommendation of their freshly brewed coffee by a waiter named Christopher. That was probably the best cup of coffee we have throughout the entire meal.

After dinner, we had chats at the lobby. Unfortunately, though the lobby seems like a comfortable place with plenty chairs and sofas, but there were just too many mosquitoes. Staffs do not seem to care even though we were busy hitting / killing these mosquitoes. We could not sight any mosquito coil put up to overcome this problem.

Our bad experience does not end here!

The next morning, we could not enter G Cafe for our breakfast in which was included in our room rates. The staff at G Cafe claimed that our room does not include breakfast. Only upon much hassle and checking by the said staff with the front desk, they found mistakes and allowed us into the cafe for the poorly served breakfast.

Because we were not happy with the breakfast as well as the embarrassment we received for not been able to have our breakfast, we informed front office to cancel our breakfast the next morning. However, when we check-out the next day, breakfast charges were included into our bill for the breakfast we did not have. Only after much hassle, the amount was taken out, and the entire checking out process took no less than 30 minutes!

Need I say more, for such a new hotel in such a perfect location; all else seems to fail from front desk, room quality, services to F&B. I think the Management need to look into the mentioned aspects immediately to ensure quality before losing more hotel guest like ourselves.

We submitted our feedback, and got a reply from the General Manager, but damages had been made, and we felt a BIG WASTE for such a nicely located and named hotel.

Stayed here for 3 nights, had read a few bad reviews about the staff and rooms not being ready, but it looked like good value and in a good location, so booked it with fingers crossed!

Location - adjacent to Gurney Plaza, a nice modern shoping centre with lots of good places to eat and drink. Step out of hotel with a view of the sea, nice.

Staff - read some bad reviews of hotel which mostly concerned the staff. All i can say is that the staff were very friendly and eager to help.

Room - booked the Superior Room. True to form the room was just readied as i arrived at the door! Room was very big and decorated with a chic oriental theme, including a funky 4 poster bed. My only complaint was the mattress which was hard.

Bathroom - No bath, but a very large walk in shower with the most powerful shower i have ever used!

Breakfast - included in room rate and consisted of a wide choice of oriental and western buffet, located in the very nice G Cafe. Good quality.

Negative comments - my room overlooked the pool, which also overlooked the construction of the extension to Gurney Plaza. If you're going to stay here INSIST on a sea view room.
- very hard mattress.

In summary this is a very nice hotel and good value, located in a good location and i would stay here again. Just watch out for the construction site and the hard mattress!

The hotel is lovely, check in wasnt fantastic, there was a few problems as the Receptionist didnt process my payment properly so i had to ring England and sort it out with my bank. Then the hotel tried to charge me for the phone call. We also wanted a double bed, but the room we were booked into only had two twin beds, so we asked for them to be zipped together. Reception said it would be done that evening but instead we got an extra foldaway bed in the room and still had twin beds, we pushed the beds together and were happy enough with that though.
Otherwise everything was lovely, the pool is gorgeous. The room was so nice and had a great view. We had the Seafood BBQ buffet one night, it was quite pricey but was delicious and the staff were really nice. Breakfast was expensive too, it looked great but as we were on a budget we went to the square next door and had mcdonalds and went to a nice cafe. The square and shopping centre next door was a bonus, theres lots of food places (mcdonalds, Chicken places, dominos pizzas, starbucks, and a nice chilli place) cinemas, hair dressers and lots and lots and lots of shops! Unfortunately apart from the complex there isnt really much to the area, but we still had a great time.

We had a bad start. Indicated in the booking that we'd arrive at 2pm which is checking time, room wasn't ready until 4pm. We were only told "Please come back later". When I asked about 2pm being check-in time, staff said checking time at 2pm only available when room is ready (I booked weeks before). I don't believe this should be a customer's problem especially when the hotel is rated as 4 stars at several websites (even though staff said they don't have stars because it's a new hotel).

I mentioned about the extra bed when arrived for the first time, when staff said room wasn't ready (the extra bed was also mentioned in the booking), front desk said that could be arranged. After the long wait for the room to be made and the fact that I mentioned it when we arrived, we weren't happy when we found out the extra bed wasn't made when we entered our room. I had to contact staff 3X for it to finally be made.

Apart from that, there're only small things like bottom of cups slightly stained, a strip of mould in the bathroom, probably missed when cleaning because other parts of the bathroom were clean.

Breakfast is good, fresh fruit, nice pastries and cheese. Good variety. Try not to sit outside as there's a construction going on just behind it (Dec 07) and you will definitely inhale and eat dust.
