I loved my time at Hotel Century Southern Tower. Being my first time in Tokyo it was a little tricky to find, but I found a helpful Japanese uniformed man who showed me the general direction to take.
The Narita Express from Narita International Airport in Tokyo costs around US$30 and takes precisely 77 minutes to Shinjuku station (via Tokyo station). My tip: find the Southern exit (I mistakenly took the South-East exit the first time). Beside the Southern exit of Shinjuku station is a pedestrian crossing - cross it, do a dog-leg to the right and keep heading South (basically, keep heading straight as you exit the Southern exit of Shinjuku station). After crossing the road is a walkway, and as you keep walking you may notice signs to the hotel.. or if you miss those you certainly won't miss seeing queues of people at a Krispy Kreme donut shop (it's all the rage, queues are there at all hours of the day and well into the night). After about a 5 minute walk the hotel is on the right.. and then find the elevators to the 20th floor to the hotel lobby to check in.
The check-in staff are friendly. I didn't attempt to exercise a great deal of English, but was able to communicate the uncomfortable situation of having my credit card declined (I went around the corner to the pay phones, bought a phone card, and called Australia to get my credit card unfrozen). All-in-all a painless check-in experience.
My room was clean, tidy. Free broadband Ethernet - I didn't have a cable but a 7-story electronics store called BIC Camera was nearby and I bought an Ethernet cable there. The free internet was great. There's no wireless connectivity, however (not a problem for me).
I had some trouble trying to figure out how to turn off the entrance light, but it turned out that pretty much all lights could be controlled by a control panel on the bedside table.
The bed was extremely hard (for a Westerner like myself). It almost felt like a plank of wood. I'm not complaining - apparently this is what is to be expected in Japan.
The toilet was a western-style one. I couldn't find the toilet paper initially but it was there, just a bit lower than I expected. The shower was nice. The towels had a foreign smell that I couldn't identify and probably wouldn't consider pleasant to my nose, but wasn't terrible either.
I'm going to return to this hotel if I can. The location is great and everything at the hotel works. The view from my room was breathtaking.
