“Worse than expected”

Thalassa Palace Nahrawess

Room: Neat, spacy, good lightning, ok bath.
Food: so-so (at least for the 4-star hotel), little choice, average quality, expensive drinks.
Service: below average, slow, no smiles, no excuses.
Hotel territory: very nice.
Beach: rather good, white and clean sand.
Thalasso: 4 of 5, the visit to doctor if you don't speak French is just a formality, you will throw 20 euros away, but this visit is mandatory.
Excursions: very good (because of great guide).

The ideal plan for having a great vacation with thalasso: take 10 days, visit thalasso center and get a plan of your procedures, then relax for 3 days at the beach, take 4 or 5 days of thalasso therapy and get a break for 2 days to go on the excursion to Sahara (we did not, because our tour was 7 days only). And you can say 'It's done!' about Tunisia. :)

I stayed there in May and really needed relaxation. The Spa was outstanding. I did it everyday. I can't wait to return to do it again.

“Solo female really enjoyed this”

Thalassa Palace Nahrawess

Mar 28, 2007

I've just returned from a five day spa break at this hotel. I booked it though Thermalia (they're excellent by the way) and as a solo female traveller I was a little concerned but I needn't have worried. I had a wonderful time.

I've uploaded some photos of the bedroom. It was large and spotlessly clean with a TV (BBC World was the only English channel I could find) mini bar, balcony, bathroom with shower with loads of hot water.

I booked on a half board basis. The breakfast was buffet style with every type of bread, delicious warm croissants, freshly squeezed juices, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, eggs cooked anyway you wanted, fresh fruit salad - more than enough to set anyone up for the day.

Dinner was again a buffet with soups, salads, cold meats, hot meats (chicken, beef, fish), cous cous, rice, potatoes - a really good variety and of course - be warned - the desserts were truly scrumptious. They should carry a health warning they are so mouth watering.

There's lunch and snacks available all day too if you so wish. I had lunch one day and the chef made me a traditional Tunisia dish which was like a crispy pancake filled with fish and an egg. It sounds gross but it was heavenly.

Yes French is spoken widely. It is the second language of Tunisia and I think about 90% of their visitors are French. Surprisingly not many English speaking tourists go to this hotel. All the staff I dealt with spoke good English (certainly significantly better than my Arabic!) and couldn't have been more helpful. I would especially like to mention a waiter, R Jamal in the Ulysses restaurant. He really made me feel so welcome every evening without being overly familiar.

Surprisingly the weather was cold - it was the first cold spell they've had in Tunisia. Fortunately I had four spa treatments booked per day so I didn't care about the weather. The spa centre is excellent. It was spotlessly clean in every area and there is a vast range of treatments to be had from seaweed wraps to massages to make up treatments with jacuzzi, steam room (Hammam) and rest areas to go and relax in between treatments. Both men and women do the treatments so if you are a female and prefer a female masseuse you should probably specify this beforehand. It wasn't an issue for me. They're completely professional. I would confirm before any treatments though how long they're supposed to last because mine seemed to vary from 15 mins to 30 mins depending on the person.

The hotel advertises a private beach and beach access is beside the hotel but be aware that it is part of a very large stretch of coast and the public do walk through it. I'm sad to say that the one day I did venture onto it, I had my camera stolen from my bag which spoiled things a bit but I was just happy that they hadn't got their hands on my purse. It's something to be aware of though. Again the hotel were prompt to help and phoned the police immediately. These things happen.
