I have just got back from the Bel Azur and quite frankly I was shocked at some of the poor reviews, I needed to reply, as I'm not sure what hotel some guests were talking about , I wondered if they really stayed there. I want to reassure potential guests that all is well and would highly recommend it.
I have being going to the Bel Azur and Tunisia for the past 10 years and love the hotel, I go, my sister, my parents and several friends of our too and all return frequently.I cannot understand what some tourists come to expect or if they even read about the country before making a booking. When you visit a different continent namely Africa, life is completely different and you have to listen, respect and try to understand other cultures and customs, its not like blackpool or benidorm ! you don't go there for egg and chips and to find the english bars ! If you want that stay at home.
The hotel is classed as a 3 star, and yes I'd say that its a little shabby around the edges, but I've travelled the world, stayed in hostels and so called 5 star hotels and trust me, many european and indeed british hotels I've been in have been very grotty and dirty and had awful food (esp spain and greece). The hotel is slowly being renovated, but if you ask politely at reception if there is a problem, they do fix them, or indeed ask your rep or the guest relations lady called Liz !
The food is very good, so I don't know what the fuss is about, I have a gut disorder so I am really fussy about food and to date have never had a problem, there's so much choice, salads, grilled meats, fishes, stews, spit roasts, pasta's,hot veggies, local dishes oh and chips of course ! the food is always hot, fresh and organic. Brekkie is esp good as they make fresh omlettes and crepes for you and squeeze fresh juices.
As said in a previous review tipping a dinar not much, its what 40p, not much to us richer brits is it ? the waiters don't hassle you for it and are grateful, the weekly wage is only 70 dinars, £30 maybe, not much so a few dinars here and there really helps. The majority of the staff have been there for many years and are kind and helpful, taking time to learn some arabic or french words for hello, goodbye, please and thank you also helps and goes along way, english is only the 3rd language and many tunisians speak 4 or 5, so put us brits to shame. Its also common sense not to leave valubles exposed, you would'nt do so at home would you ?
The hotel grounds are lovely and the hotel is directly on the beach with clean sand and sea. You can use either the inside or outside pool, the facilities at the sister hotels, or visit and have a drink in any of the hotels in hammamet.
The shop opp the hotel is great for getting supplies, bottled water only 15p. Good tip for a nice drink, (hot choc only 80p, beer about £1, soft drinks 50p), is to turn right out of the gates and go to the Fontana cafe, next to and part of the Hotel Romaine Residence. Here also is the taxi phone to phone home, only 2-3 dinars for a 3-5 min call, so don't use hotel !
Hammamet is worth a visit, its fine to walk or take a taxi for 3 dinars ! sit at the Dolce Vita Cafe and people watch, looking out to sea, try your hand at haggling, but above all be open minded.
