“A brilliant holiday”

El Mouradi Hammamet

Jul 2, 2008

My friend and I booked our holiday through Just Sunshine for a week in May. We had a very helpful and friendly Holiday rep who made sure we were well looked after. The hotel staff, waiters and entertainment guys were all fantastic and really made our holiday an enjoyable one.

The hotel itself was comfortable and clean. Our room was nice, but quite basic, not quite 5 star, maybe 4. But the food and service were great! This hotel is not to be confused with the one next door, as they are both in the El Mouradi group.

We spent a lot of time at the pool, it was great just to have a relaxing week away from London. We visited the local medina and also went on a tour of Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. Once you've seen one medina, you've seen them all, as you'll find most of the same stuff wherever you go. The haggling can get very tiring, so we did give up on the shopping by the end of the week.

It was a great week away, I would definitely go back.

“Pros & cons”

El Mouradi Hammamet

3 of 5 stars

We booked our hol through last minute & got a good deal. Though only realised later on that the hol was via Just Sunshine - convenient as we got return transfers from Monastir Airport to the El Mouradi in Yasmine Hammamet. The tour company were also available everyday in reception so we could ask questions and also book tours with them.

Downsides:

We were delayed 3 hrs going out (couldn't buy much with the £5 food voucher, but then again better than no voucher at all!).
For the return flight we were delayed 7 hrs! Although Just Sunshine arranged for us to go to a local hotel for dinner, the fact we were delayed so long meant that we arrived at Gatwick in the middle of the nite at about 1am & were lucky to make the last train out of Gatwick!

Downsides regarding the hotel included 95% of the male staff (mostly in the restaurant, but throughout really) who we found both rude & ignorant (well from the perspective of two girls travelling - guess couples wouldn't experience the same hassle) - this we found a constant problem wherever we went around Yasmine, old Hammamet, Tunis... with people shouting 'Shakira' at us from every direction. Which is fair enough, but we expected more from what is supposed to be a 5* hotel, or any hotel for that matter as you shoudn't have to feel hassled in the comfort of your own hotel (we tried complaining but they didn't understand).
The few women who did speak to us on the other hand were the complete opposite - extremely welcoming and friendly. One local taught us how to say hello & goodbye 'asleema' & 'besleema' which we found extremely useful (shouting both out in quick succession in response to unwanted hassle soon put a stop to that!).

In the medina & other shops/stalls, you get a lot of people pressuring you to buy things, & kids trying to sell you jasmine flowers - if you're not used to that it can be quite stressful - we preferred shopping in 'fixed price' shops. I did buy some jasmine though as smells great!

People should be aware that some of the rooms facing the sea are directly ontop of a noisy club - very noisy & everynight!

Highlights!:

Overall the holiday package was very good value & convenient. We were full board as we didn't want the hassle of finding good restaurants, risking delly belly etc. The hotel provides a very big variety of food and of good quality.

Having moaned about some of the staff, I have to say the pool guy (the oldish one) was fantastic, always working hard & ensuring everyone got access to sunbeds etc - we tipped him at the end of our hol:) The cleaning staff & women working in the massage place were also really friendly. We booked a one day package of massages, turkish bath, hydrobath, manicure, pedicure, facial etc which they allowed us to split over 2 days - I definitely recommend treating yrself there! It's also nice to tip if you've appreciated things (e.g. the cleaners, massage people etc).

As for tours, we went on 2 - safari park & zulu night and Carthage/Tunis/Sidi Bou Said - both were good (except for the coach picking us up late both times). I'd recommend doing about 2 tours then roam around yrself.

My highlight of the holiday was parasailing - from the beach right outside the hotel - I absolutely loved it! Shame it only lasts 5-10 minutes:( The watersports people there are great - professional & very friendly:) Another highlight was swimming in the sea as this was my first time doing that! & now I've learnt that going in & out of the sea, lazing on the beach with wet skin etc makes you tan/burn about a zillion times quicker - not good! Find some shade!

Strolling along the beach at dusk was very relaxing:)

Tips:

If visiting Old Hammamet i.e the Medina take the 'little train' - much more exciting than a taxi!

Most people speak good English, but not all - so if you can speak some French it really helps!

If you're wondering why the waiters in the hotel keep trying to get you to sit at the same table for every meal - it's because they're expecting a nice tip on your last day!

I thought the hotel had several swimming pools, tennis courts, gym etc & hence packed my gym gear! Note however that you must pay to use the 'massage' pool, the tennis courts and the gym (and it is far from cheap!). Internet is also expensive to use when I expected at a 5* that it would be free!

If you want to buy any last minute souvenirs at Monastir airport they accept Tunisian Dinars, Sterling, Euros etc so pretty handy.

“Great for a bargain break...but beware Karthago airlines!”

El Mouradi Hammamet

2 of 5 stars
london, UK
Jun 30, 2008

If you manage to get a bargain on the internet, this hotel is great value for a week in the sun but it definitely isn't a 5 star more a very good 3 star.
The rooms were big with a reasonable sized bathroom and balcony. They were cleaned daily and the maid even does the origami thingy with the duvet, which is a nice touch. There are complimentary toiletries but they weren't replaced or replenished very often. There's a mini bar, but you have to ask to have it stocked up, and actually I would go up the road to the supermarket and get your own water/beer etc just don't let the reception staff see you carrying it in. We were stopped with a six pack of water bottles! There is a sign outside saying you aren't allowed to bring your own drink in the hotel! (We really didn't think this applied to water!!) We were given a bottle of complimentary wine in our room but unfortunately there was no corkscrew to open it. When we took it down to dinner one night hoping we could either have it with dinner or they would be able to open it for us, they virtually accused us of knicking it because it's what they give to the All-Inclusive!
The food wasn't fantastic, but for the price we paid we were very pleasantly surprised. Breakfast is your usual cereal, fruit, yogurt, dodgy looking processed ham and cheese, toast, croissants and array of hot stuff. Negatives - the fruit juice is more like squash, the bacon and sausages are just weird and you could stand your spoon in the coffee. Positives - eggs cooked to order, hot pancakes also cooked to order, lots of lovely black olives and lots of lovely cakes.
Dinner was markedly better with a big selection of salads, two varieties of soup every night, several Tunisian dishes, another array of hot things and lots of lovely deserts including fruit. Negatives - most of the food was lacking a description of any sort and those that did would just say 'chicken' or 'fish', also both myself and my partner found some things quite bland. Positives - all the waiters were extremely pleasant (especially if you tip) and will have a table ready for you. Also we found the wine fairly cheap for a hotel and not that bad for local Tunisian plonk!!
The hotel is ideally placed for the beach and the new Medina, which is just behind the hotel and definitely worth a wander if you can bear to be constantly hassled. A stern 'no' seemed to work but there seems to be a new tactic where they stand infront of you and won't let you get by, which I personally found extremely annoying. I'm 5ft 8 so wasn't too intimidated by it but I'm damn sure there will be women who are! I just wish they'd realise that this totally puts you off looking at anything, even if you wanted too! That said, most of the locals were charming and friendly and bargaining with them really is seen as a bit of fun!
The beach is very nice with each hotel responsible of a section with your own sunbeds and umbrellas. A previous reviewer had mentioned the 'camel poo' on the beach, which a local explained is actually some kind of vegetation from the sea. It does look suspiciously like camel poo but it doesn't smell at all, and there thankfully were no jellyfish in the sea, which was surprisingly cold.
My BIG complaint - and there are two - regarding the package, is the 'reserving your sunbed with a towel' scenario that takes place despite them quite clearly stating in the 'pool rules' that this is not allowed. If you wanted an umbrella, which is advisable as it gets extremely hot at midday, you had to have your towel on a bed by 8.30 at the absolute latest. The pool attendant is great though and he helps you move stray beds around so you can have two together. My second, and biggest complaint is Karthago airlines! I appreciate that if you book a package you aren't able to choose who you fly with, but please beware if you're flying with Karthago. We were delayed for 4 hours flying out, which meant arriving at the hotel with several other coach loads at 4am when only one reception staff was available to check everyone in. And then flying back we were delayed again for 7 hours which meant landing at Gatwick at 1am, long after any public transport has stopped. May have been just our luck to be delayed on our outgoing and incoming flights, but to be delayed for a total of 11 hours in a weeks holiday is just not acceptable. And ground staff at Monastir airport told us that delays are a regular occurrence with Karthago! Good luck!

“Never Again!”

El Mouradi Hammamet

Jun 30, 2008

Just got back from this hotel (booked with Just Sunshine), and I have to say its one of the worst I have ever stayed in!
We are a couple aged 26 and 28 and have stayed at various hotels over the years in various resorts and this was one of - if not THE worst hotel.

We were delayed on both flights, but thats another story (dont fly with Karthago Air!!) and when we arrived at the hotel at around 4-5am in the morning, the hotel only had one guy checking people in. Baring in mind there was around 80 odd people to check in, this was a total joke, and they seemed totally unprepared nor organised.
We first got a key under someone elses name (couldnt be bothered to argue about that at 5am), then when we got to the room, we found it had a door leading to the next room, which had no lock on. So when the people in the room next door got to their room, they walked straight into our room not knowing what the door was for. This is shocking in my opinion, and we moved rooms the next morning (with no apologies).
The next room was just as old and worn out, the carpet was horrible and dirty, the pillows were so lumpy and uncomforatable, the shower didnt work properly, the toilet leaked, there was no iron provided (and they charged you to have a shirt ironed!), I could go on.....
Even though I complained about the toilet, nothing was ever done!
The toilets around the hotel were dirty and not maintained well enough.
The evening entertainment was poor and in some cases not suitable for children to watch in my opinion.
The entertainment during the day was loud and it was very hard to relax.
The breakfast did not cater for English - it was all continential, but you would have been happy enough if you were German I suppose.
We saw glass smashed by a waiter and not swept up properly.
We were also told about some filming done at the hotel, but none of the guests were told about this, and you were basically a free extra and were told to keep quiet and not disturb filming.

Plus points:
There was a very polite older guy around the pool, who couldnt do enough for everyone, and most of the staff were nice enough.
The actual resort is nice enough. Its not finished yet, and I reckon in around 5 years it will be a top place - although hotels llike this one need to be closed or dealt with.

My advice - dont travel with Just Sunshine, and make sure you are not flying with Karthago Air, they are truely shocking and both flights were heavily delayed!
This hotel is more like a 3 star than a 5 in my opinion, and I would not stay there again or advise anyone else to either.

“Last Minute week away 5 star allocation on arrival”

El Mouradi Hammamet

5 of 5 stars
LIVERPOOL

Last Minute week away 5 star allocation on arrival with Mytravel, What can I say we ended up at this hotel, we had requested a room with a double bed and when we got to our room found that it had twin beds albeit a fair size room when we went back down to reception to ask if we could have a room with a double bed we where told none were available at most hotels that would be the end of it, not so here the reception guy was great he asked if we would be happy to accept a suite (at no extra charge) after thinking about it for around 1 second we agreed that was were our good luk kicked in we were given a suite dead centre of the hotel on the third floor over reception and looking straight out to sea the room was massive the size of two rooms with a lounge and a bedroom with a super king-size bed along with two bathrooms.
The hotel is great with a super pool area and a great pool guy who sorts your beds every day ( for a small tip) he even supplies books and magazines and there is even an indoor pool and spar which is spotless and usually quite.the bar and lounge areas of the hotel are very good and the staff are all friendly and attentive and the hotel is located in a great position more or less centre of beach area and over looking the beach, Just a short stroll away is the marina full of super boats and yachts. The only downside to the hotel is the food the breakfast was not to bad with a fair selection of hot and clod items but the evening meals where dire very limited choice and pretty much inedible on most nights but Hey we only paid around £600 for the two of us for a week in June and the weather was great, so if you book this hotel and get it at a good price you will be happy with the hotel and can always afford to eat out on some nights.
