“Old Motel passing for a Hotel”

Holiday Inn

Jan 8, 2008

I stayed here for 1 night. I bid $60 on Priceline and got a room here. They put me in the old section of the hotel, which looks like it used to be a Motel that they turned into a Hotel. The room was extremely small, although clean. The carpet looked faded and old, but the rest of the room was very clean. The bed was comfortable. The room was just too small. The front desk people were professional and polite. 3 minute drive to airport.

“Smells like chlorine, hair in bathrooms, damp carpeting throughout, poor service”

Holiday Inn

1 of 5 stars
Washington D.C.
Sep 26, 2007

We booked here b/c a friend was getting married here - at a preferred rate of $179 at a 3 star Holiday Inn, we did not expect to find: guest room carpet to be so damp and dirty our feet were blackened and covered in dirt and hair. Mold on the curtains, dirty bathrooms, and an overall musty odor rounded out the room. We complained the next day and got moved to 2 new rooms and were assured the rooms had been thoroughly cleaned. Instead, we again found hair all over the bathrooms and damp carpets. We also found that the ceilings in the bathroom were open - we could see pipes, etc. (and who knows who could see us). When we complained at checkout, the manager told us that the hotel is under renovation - a bad ventilation system causes wetness from the indoor pool to build up in the main house's guest rooms. The manager eventually gave us a significant refund but only after pointing out the extensively poor service we received. If the hotel is in such bad shape, it should not be charging these ridiculous rates or at the very least clearly state its disrepair. I would not recommend staying in the hotel's main house - unless you want to smell chlorine for your entire stay.

“Another outdated conference hotel”

Holiday Inn

Paid $70 for this hotel on Priceline. Another big, old dinosaur of a hotel with tired bedding and furnishings, mold in the bathroom, a broken TV and remote control, and a general state of decline. Not even free coffee (to say nothing of breakfast) in the lobby.

A really nice looking pool, although we didn't use it. Polite staff.

On a major "strip" with every chain restaurant and store conceivable.

I think bidding on 2 1/2 stars brings up much better properties on Priceline these days than these sorts of 3 star hotels. They tend to be newer and have free breakfast (and free parking, where that matters).

“An aging wannabe”

I visited this hotel as a guest because it hosted a conference I needed to attend. I stayed three nights in late July.

I haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn since I was a kid, and I can't say this one lived up to my childhood ideal.

First the architecture of this hotel: it's downright odd. I don't know what this hotel aspires to. It looks like they converted an old motel to a conference center by installing a superstructure over the courtyard (where a parking lot would be), and laying down carpet. The carpet is worn and smelly -- both in rooms and in common areas.

AC was completely ineffective in my room -- I stayed in 195. The room smelled stale and musty. An extra ventilation fan was installed above the room door, which apparently aspired to clear the air a little. Didn't help much.

Iron in the room was smashed. I had to call for a new one, which burped red rust water.

Fitness room had aging equipment, with some pieces "out of order". If you waited in line, it was possible to get a workout. Just paper towels, though, for the cleanup.

Staff was friendly at check-in but not terribly helpful when looking for places to eat on Wolf Road ("Try room service.") After asking three staff, I finally learned that there was a great diner... next door!

I should say that there were "Please Excuse our Dust" signs posted throughout the lobby, promising renovations of conference spaces. Didn't see much renovation actually happening, but I'd hope that the renovations extend to the actual rooms.

Overall, in terms of layout and purpose, this hotel seems to want to be The Desmond -- a wonderful hotel and conference center further down Wolf Road. It doesn't even come close.

“Average....”

Holiday Inn

3 of 5 stars
Hampton Bays, New York
May 12, 2007

I've stayed at better and stayed at worse. Staff was friendly and courteous. Room was very clean and the bed comfortable. Bathroom was very clean and the water pressure in the shower was above average. The hotel's layout is a little confusing (must have added on once or twice). If you're traveling on business, this is a good place to stay. It is about a 15 (depending on traffic) minute trip to downtown
Albany.
