“Good Allround Holiday”

Baron Resort Sharm El Sheikh

Just returned from one weeks break at the Baron Resort. We booked through Thomas Cook and we went all inclusive. The flight out was ok, and although we had decided that we were not going to get the visa to travel outside of Sharm, the flight crew, did scare you a little buy saying that if you need any medical assistance, then you would need a visa and Sharm has no hospital, also we had to get the visa upon arrival as you could not get one at a later date (not the case as our onsite rep told us we could get them if we changed our minds!!). The visa itself costs $15, but strangely when we arrived at the visa counter, they wanted $36 for 2 visas, by this time they had stuck it in your passport, so you had no choice!! Also there are forms for you to fill out on the plane, so remember a pen!!

The Baron Resort is about a 20 min transfer from the airport, which was very quick and easy, when we arrived at 10.30pm at the resort, we check in quickly and were able to upgrade to a sea view room for £11 per night, it was well worth the beautiful view of the sea, beach and gardens (It is also cheaper to upgrade at the hotel itself than via the travel agent). Our room was spacious, but twin beds which was a bit of a shock, but not enough for us to change rooms, the bathroom was large with a shower, and the wardrobe had plenty of hanging space, but not enough hangers!! We did get complimentary dressing gowns and slippers for the week, along with a beach bag.

The beach was large with plenty of loungers and shades. We got to the beach for about 9.30am and always got the same spot (thanks to tipping the sun lounger guys, who held the spot for you) The men selling news papers and magazines were the biggest pain, with the excursion sellers taking no for an answer and moving on. Do keep an eye out for Ali Barbar (no I'm not joking) he is a really nice guy, just be firm with him and he will pop by every day with a wave and no hassle!! The sea was beautiful, really clear with a good array of fish to see, the pontoon did get very busy and as they had netted off a safe area for snorkelling (lots of boats do moor here) so at times it was crowded! We took a snorkelling trip to Tiran Island, which was good, but you couldn't free snorkel, you had to follow the guide around, which was a bit of a pain, and we didn't really see that much because of it.

The down side of the holiday for me, was the restaurants. We shouldn't have gone all inclusive, as AI in Egypt is not the same as anywhere else I have been. We got buffet and local drinks included, plus 2 meals at the Egyptian restaurant and two meals at the Italian, everything else you had to pay for, with a small discount for being AI. Breakfast was good, with plenty of waffles, crepes or omelettes. Don't expect eggs and bacon, although the omelette guy will do a fried egg for you. Lunch was dull, usually consisted of pasta, rice and lamb or beef, and fish and chips, it got a bit samie for me, and you did tend to find if you had the buffet for dinner, it was the left over's from lunch!! We ate at all the other restaurants, the Curry was fantastic, I do recommend it, it cost about £25 for two meals plus alcohol. The Egyptian was good, but very slow with food and drink, so don't plan on going anywhere to quickly. The Italian was good and I liked the pizza here, so I guess it comes down to taste. My biggest disappointment was the seafood restaurant, service was slower that the Egyptian, and you had no idea what you dinner was going to cost, as its done on the weight of the fish. We had 2 calamari, 1 lobster and 2 prawns, with beer, and it came to about £30.

We found the bar staff, especially at the beach bar, were fab and would keep you entertained, and deserved the tips, everyone else didn't push for tips and to be fair didn't deserve them. We found all the staff spoke English, but some had better Italian and Russian, so it did get interesting at times.

We got a late check out (1 hour extra with no charge) and the run to the airport was quick. We flew back with Monarch, who were charging £10 for every 1KG over 15KG, so be aware of this. Also there was another form for you fill out before passport control!

I would go back to the Baron Hotel, but as B&B, as the food is cheap here, with a good choice (apart from the buffet) Don't panic about money as you can charge it to the room or pay in Sterling, Dollars or E Pounds (they love sterling as the exchange rate is so good). Yes there are a lot of Italian and Eastern Europeans here and yes they are rude and loud, but not enough to spoil a holiday, by the end of it, we were just as bad not holding doors ect, so it works both ways.

A really good all-round hotel more 4.5* but nicer than the Baron Palms next door.

booked hotel a couple of days before we travelled. the weather was not great but the hotel is very compact and if the weather had been warmer the beach and pool area are excellent. the room was large and the bathroom roomy and the shower good. the restaurants on the resort are good especially the indian. the staff were very friendly and helpful. i would stay at this hotel again and also recommend it to friends.

“Lovely 7 Day Break”

Baron Resort Sharm El Sheikh

Firstly, I will quote all monies in 'Pounds Sterling' to avoid confusion.

We booked through Thomson website, nice flight out of Birmingham, no delays. Decent food on flight.

Arrived at the Baron Hotel late afternoon of 3rd April. We stayed on a B&B basis, as I know HB and AI is available at this hotel. First room was 236, which faced the road, and was a twin as opposed to a double. Not ideal for a romantic getaway, so asked to be switched to a double overlooking the beach. This was done for an additonal £11 per night. Robe and slippers provided in each room. The room was cleaned everyday with the usual nice touches.

Cannot fault the breakfast in the mornings. Buffet style with everything you can think of, fresh fruit, eggs, waffles, crepes, yoghurt etc. Never any trouble to find a table, and tea and coffee served in a large flask, so definately more then 2 cups! Only groan is the non-smoking area is significantly smaller than the smoking!

We ate at all the restaurants on the resort, our favourites been the Seafood and the Taj Mahal Indian. With The Seafood restaurant, you really don't have any idea what your meal will cost until the bill arrives, as you choose the fish upon arrival, which is weighed then cooked for you on an open grill then served to you on a small charcoal grill at your table. For 2 starters, 2 mains and a bottle of Egyptian wine the price varied between £25- £40. The bottle of Egyptian wine was between £10-13. They never seemed very forth coming with desserts, as a few times I noticed other tables had been given their bill after their main dish was finished, when they did want a dessert!

The pool bar was a little windy at times, and as they tend to serve in tall plastic cups for safety reasons, they had a habit of blowing over. We only ate in here a few times and the food was good. About £6 for a burger and fries, and £1.50 for a soft drink. Never had a problem with service.

The pool itself is huge, heated, with a shallow end for the little ones, although there is a childrens pool anyway. Seemed to be plenty of sunbeds and enough brollys. Beach towel hut opens at 7am.

The beach has more than enought sunbeds, all with brollys for every 2 beds. The usual 'lucky lucky' men walking up and down, but a polite no thank you and they mould move on.

We found the cocktail prices expensive. £6 each for a glass. The local beer, Stella, £3 for half litre bottles was ok.

We did one excursion via Thomson. Would recommend you take travellers cheques or English notes if you intend to book any trips via them, as they price everything in £ sterling, but if you pay by card, this is switched to Egyptian pounds at a ridiculous rate and you would end up paying significantly more! The Stars and Dinner evening I would definately recommend, as the star gazing is amazing. If you're lucky, you'll also get to see Saturn through a telescope!

The hotel does offer a return shuttle bus into Naama Bay (about 20 mins away) for £4 return, but we never used it as the times were a bit random. We used a hotel taxi, which is supposed to be £8 one way, but if they're quiet, we got them to do it for £5.

We're glad we didn't go All Inclusive, as there are quite a few restrictions about where you can eat and what drinks you can have. Everything can be charged to your room, so no need to carry cash whilst out and about the resort, although a bit for tipping was much appreciated.

The hotel seemed to be very popular amongst the Russians, we only noticed a few English whilst there, but that isn't always a bad thing!

All in all, a nice break and would recommend to all.

“Save money and your Life!”

Baron Resort Sharm El Sheikh

Apr 15, 2008

I write this review as a thank you to TripAdvisor and those who contributed information about the Baron Resort. It informed our decisions and saved time. The first tip is to print off the reviews and take them with you as I referred to them several times throughout the holiday.

We stayed at the Baron Resort for one week bed and breakfast. I was tempted to go AI but glad we did not as it gave us the freedom to do other things. We went into Naama bay twice and had an evening out meal through a local tour. For the rest of the week we ate lunch and evening meals and had drinks charged to the room. For four of us the week’s bill came to £330 which is much more reasonable than the £960 bill for the AI – although it is far to say we are only social drinkers.

Rooms and whole hotel spotlessly clean and on site toilet facilities amazing (you even get a cloth flannel for the toilets near the pool area). The food on the whole was disappointing. The breakfast was good and varied (don’t expect a full English) but the rave reviews about the Indian restaurant were simply not justified. The Bella Vista Italian restaurant was the best of the lot. Two of us suffered food poisoning whilst at the Baron – but could not put it down to a specific food or restaurant.
Forget entertainment unless you enjoy staff running round in circles clapping their hands – this hotel would be a nightmare for teenagers although very good for younger families.

The hotel wins out on its location – it has a wide beach whilst other hotels along the shoreline (including the Hilton) have narrow or steep steps to small beach areas. But the house reefs of the Baron is what it’s all about – top tip visit all the reefs (along plastic pontoons) as they are all different and visit them in the early morning (well before 10 am anyway) because the light is much better. The fish and the reefs are truly fantastic, particularly as we only snorkel and don’t dive. What spoils the reefs however is the unremitting toing and froing of power boats right up to the pontoon and at high speeds. There does not seem to be too much in the way of conservation for this spectacular underwater world and it was evident in the fact that in some areas diesel and sun tan lotion were visible on top of the water. Egypt tourism must make more an effort in this respect. Bigger boats also moor off these reefs indicating how good they are but obviously putting pressure on this delicate environment.

The beach is laid out in typically battery hen sun bathing fashion – with those wanting a front row sea view staking their claim with towels by 7am!. Whilst the sand near the shore is lovely the rest of the beach is a dirty gritty type of sand. Although you cannot get access to the reef from the beach (as you would hit coral) there is access to the sea where youngsters can paddle. We noticed that other areas either side of the Baron had hardly any access to the sea – other than over rocks and old coral so the beach is a plus for the Baron. Swimming in the sea from the beach is therefore limited and may not be suitable for traditional beach lovers who like to wade in. The pontoons and snorkelling more than compensate however.

One aspect about the hotel that I do not believe anyone else has mentioned is that at dawn and at dust a man goes around the resort with a loud smoke machine to kill off mosquitoes – it must work because it is the only hot country I have stayed and have not been bitten or kept awake half the night with a rolled up magazine tucked close to my chest. In fact I did not even see a mosquito. Anyway – avoid this smoke (a mixture of diesel, pesticide and cyanide [joke]) which is blown out by the largest disco smoke effect machine in the world. Close all your doors – if you are out in the grounds when the machine starts up – run like hell – I got caught up in a cross wind which descaled my lung lining in seconds. A necessary and effective evil.

Just a quick word on the Russians – I went with an open mind having read the reviews and determined to prove the comments wrong but unfortunately they are correct. Despite the very beautiful Russian woman most Russians will pass you by as if you are invisible – even when you nod or say good morning.

We thought the Baron missed out on five stars because of the dated rooms (70s tiling etc) although one very good feature is when you open the sliding patio door the air conditioning switches off (and vice versa) – clever.

How to save Money

We booked two trips through Thomson. The first was a VIP cruise – adults only – with butler service (Cost £50 each). The reality was: a man running round the boat giving you plastic cups of soft drinks; a manic herding in to board the boat at the port; tying up with about twenty other boats out in the sea and then swimming head to toe with other snorkel swimmers to look at the reef. None of us saw many fish as we were concentrating on our guide who wanted to get us round as quickly as possible before the next boat moored up as well as concentrating on not being hit by other swimmers. The reef and the fish at the Baron are 100 times better than those experienced on this trip. Add to that the smell of constant diesel and a so- so lunch this is far from VIP – avoid at all costs.

The other trip we booked with Thomson was the stars and dinner experience (£35 each). This consisted of a trip into the desert to meet Bedouins and discover about their life, have dinner, be entertained and see the stars through computerised telescopes. Sounds great. Reality = put aside any romantic notions of drifting fine sand dunes with Omar Sharif riding a camel into the sunset. The desert is a dirty mix of what I would describe as cement dust, course sand and grit. The desert on either side of the roads are strewn with plastic bottles, bags of rubbish and mounds of rubble. It is extremely disheartening to see. We saw several wild camels rummaging through these discarded bags – not nice. The trip then took us off road to meet five other coaches into a fake Bedouin camp where we were assaulted by flies every second. The evening meal was so so – the entertainment was the fake Bedouins getting everyone in a circle and doing the hokey Cokey and clapping hands. The star gazing - which is what I really persuaded the family to go for (by this time my daughter was smirking saying ‘nice trip dad’) – was also disappointing. Although the telescopes were very professional the detail from stars was poor – we did see the planet Venus but even this was a spec in the lens. All in all this was a very disappointing trip – Don’t go. For real star gazing go to Kas in Turkey.

How to Save your Life

We went into Naama Bay twice during our holiday – teenagers will love it, parents will hate it. It is a cross between a Bangkok market on speed and a miniature Las Vegas strip. Despite other reviewers suggesting that the taxi drivers ‘know what they are doing – let them get on with it’ – it is only a matter of time (it has probably already happened) before a head on collision occurs between a taxi and another taxi or coach. Either use the shuttle bus from the Baron that goes slower or use the hotel limo service. It costs about £9 to get into Naama Bay in the hotel limo (good value if there are four of you). These drivers drive sensibly are smartly dressed and drive lovely cars. They will give you their mobile number and pick you up later – do this – do not be tempted to get a blue and white cab which are only £2 cheaper anyway.

All in all we would go back to the Baron but it’s probably not for everyone

The service of hotel employees was the wordt I have ever recieved and I have traveled the world and never have been treated like I was at this hotel. It took at least five minutes to get a drink even a water at ever bar and not because it was busy but because the bartenders do not even acknowledge you when you come up to teh bar. None of the spoke english just russian and some italian. the alcoholic drinks were just horrible..because they do not know how to make them....food was the same evry day..chicken rice and lamb. it took us two days to get more pillows. and whne we first got there the phone and a/c and the safe all DID NOT work and it they sent someone who did not speak any english or russian so he could not even understand what was broken..told us ok ok it's fine..we had to call again for servive now with an english or russian translator and finally a day later eveything was fixed in the room
and FYI the drinks at the disco after midnight are $20 us dollars each!!! overall not a good experience for the money
hyatt and four seasons everyone said was the best
