The newly named Jaz Mirabel beach complex in Nabq bay, Sharm el sheik. Its been open two seasons and changed hands twice? Iberotel and sol-y-mar have owned it so look under those too. My wife and I have just spent a week here and we have been back for 3 days.
This complex is huge . It is made up of the Mirabel club, mirabel park (with water slides, great fun.) and the mirabel beach (with a private-ish coral beach.) Over a thousand rooms in total and about a dozen pools.
we were originally booked in the mirabel club but on arrival we had been upgraded to the mirabel beach free of charge. (thankyou very much.)
The lobbies of all three are very grand and impressive, air conditioned and tastefully decorated. ( a little bit bling but then the egyptians love a bit of bling!)
Once booked in and given our all inclusive wrist bands we were left to our own devices. (did I mention that this place is huge?!) we eventually found our room and our luggage had been left outside?
First impressions of room...Good= clean egyptian cotton bedding (what else.) working aircon, loads of clean towels, powerful shower, huge two storey cabana style balcony. not so good= manky dirty rug at foot of the bed, dodgy stains on one of the chairs and a musty smell in bathroom.
The beach bar was having a party and the bar in the main building was still open, a miserable git of a barman was very quick to point out that the all inclusive finishes at midnight though. (we have only been here ten minutes!)
The beach has hundreds of parasols and loungers and knee deep water for about 250 m. (there is a jetty if you want to go snorkelling.) Oh and wear something on your feet, the coral is sharp.
If you dont book your holiday through a big company ie:Thomsons, Thomas cook etc then you are appointed an independent rep locally. we booked last minute online so we had the misfortune to be appointed TAREK from a company called WINGS. This bloke is an A***H*LE! 45 minutes late, rude, arrogant, sarcastic and he was even openly aggressive toward a young gay couple. we got our return transfer details from him (he got these wrong.) and had nothing more to do with him. If you book independently and get one of this guys letters on arrival, my advice is to bin it, its not compulsory to meet with him and he really is a cretin.
we would highly reccomend the quad biking in the desert, we booked ours through Sizso at the beach hut. (go to the beach, turn left, little hut on the right. siszo is the big gangly camp guy, speaks good english...sort of.)
It is great fun, buy a cheap shemagh (head scarf.) and wear sunglasses, you will be covered in sand when you get back. we saw baby camels and desert foxes, had tea with bedouin and risked life and limb crossing the dual carriageway! cant reccomend it enough works out about £20 each.
The all inclusive is ok, not brilliant but ok. You can only get bottled water from the bars in the main building which is a pain, the beer is ok its all local brew poured into plastic glasses straight from the bottle. a couple of tips to the glass collectors and they will keep the drinks coming while you sunbathe.
Food from the various snack bars is very 'chips' burger and chips, pizza and chips, sandwich and chips, chips and chips. but all made to order and edible. The food in the main restaurants is ok too, as hard as they try its not 5 star. but it is ok. plenty of variety and they will cook things to order. the desserts are nice too. couple of dodgy things. 1 lots of stuff that looks like it was left over from last night. (from the pay to dine resaurants.) 2 they serve the water from bottles with broken seals ? paranoid maybe but I just didnt drink it to be sure. 3 the ice cream scoop was minging. just use a spoon! but if you do complain about anything they fall over themselves to try and correct it for you.
more than 7 days and it will start to get a bit samey!
we ate at 2 of the 4 pay to dine restaurants on site. the italian, (too much cheese, not enough tomatoe sauce on the pizza, not really italiany enough to call it an italian restaurant and not cheap.) and the chinese. we got food poisoning from the chinese. It was really lovely food at the time, probably the best we had had in egypt up to that point.but we both had the worst diarrhoea the next day. looking back the rice did taste a bit "microwaved" and we were just stupid trying the sushi!! we had been drinking wine by then though!
ANTINAL to the rescue, this is a local 'cure all' course of tablets. about 6 quid from the pharmacy on site or 2 quid off siszo at the beach hut. As our diving instructor put it " local bugs need local drugs!" It seemed that everyone had a spot of pharohs revenge at some point whilst we were there. Antinal and being more careful (bottled water, no ice, etc.) did the trick for us.
We went diving with Mr Diver the on site dive centre, not the cheapest but Mark the 'kiwi from norwich!' is very patient professional and english speaking of course.(there are a lot of italian and eastern bloc dive instructors in sharm) we had 3 dives from sharks bay and the reef and fish are amazing.
"like swimming in gin"
In conclusion the mirabel complex is huge, with its own beach. (check your resort has one and not just use of one or 'beach very close by (10 minutes by bus!) Its not 5 star but its a good attempt at western standards of luxury. to give you a comparable idea we have stayed at the hilton 5 star on Tobago in the carribean and the mirabel beach is much cleaner and nicer overall.
All hotels in sharm call themselves 5 star but we saw none that really are ! some are just horrible and we were so glad to be staying at the mirabel beach. It is only two seasons old and there is still a continual maintainence programme in place with doozers constantly painting and tiling, gardening and cleaning. (one poor bugger was trying to paint a wall in the midday heat and the paint was drying before it left the roller ! )
They were repairing one of the pools while we were there and despite having another dozen to choose from I wish I had a pound for every time I heard a brit complaining!
the complex is very popular with russians and italians, we were told that this is a good thing as they are a bit more discerning with their rubles! you can spot them a mile off!
russians =overweight blokes with 80s clothes and big fake rolexes. wives bought online?
italians= too small d&g speedos, prada goggle sunglasses and fag in corner of mouth!
The resort is in Nabq, half hour and six GBP or 60 eqyptian by taxi to Naama bay and any nightlife. in Naama everything is half the price of the shops in the complex. there is a hard rock cafe, TGI friday and even a KFC! if you really need a western fix.
we had great fun despite an upset stomach for a couple of days. we booked online last minute and got a good deal. Go diving if you can its great, the quad biking is a must, its really hot 100 degrees daily, haggling the egyptians to the point of laughing is great fun we bought some toy camels that started off at a tenner each and ended up getting two for three quid! he told us that his legs would fall off if we got them any cheaper !?
Finally we went swimming with dolphins on our last day! WOW. its expensive by egyptian standards. about £120 GBP and its quite a way away. we were expecting miserable looking things with droopy fins and sad faraway eyes!
They have got 3 dolphins in a a bit of a run down aquarium. we were told that they were rescue dolphins. one from a net somewhere, one from a private aquarium! and one from the states. you are alowed in with them for about 15-20 mins and they only do it twice a week! you are assigned a dolphin..ours was called marsha and she was lovely. obviously very happy, she had been there 5 years and looked in great health , very intelligent and well trained.
The dolphins bloody love it! at one point he (the trainer not the dolphin) asked me to hold on to her fin and she would pull me. I am a big fella and I felt a bit cruel, but I dont think she even knew I was on there, they are so powerful. a brilliant end to a very enjoyable holiday!
