We stayed here for a week between 21st and 28th April and just got back. We went with First Choice as we normally do but didnt realise that First Choice use Thomas Cook planes if flying out of East Midlands.. if we knew this we wouldnt have gone with them as T Cook planes are the worst ever!! If you are over 5'2 tall you are in for a very uncomfortable five and a half hours. The seats are tiny and the seat pitch.. My knees were pressed against the seat in front all the way and there is hardly any room to eat or drink.. Avoid Thomas Cook planes like the plague.
The flight however was on time and no delays, and on the return flight we actually flew 45 mins early which was nice.
HOTEL:
We stayed in the Sport side of the hotel as the main hotel was priced about 100 quid more each. We were glad we saved the 200 quid because we saw no real reason why it should be priced higher apart from the fact it was closer to the beach. In fact we spent every day round the sport side pool as it was quiter, cleaner, and a better atmosphere. No problem getting sunbeds either unlike main hotel. It takes about 15 mins to walk from sport side, past the full size football pitch and equestrian facilities, over a quiet road and into the main hotel grounds, and down to the beach. There is some aircraft noise as being so close to the airport, but certainly nothing to cause problems or be a nuisence.
Both parts of the hotel are very clean as are all the grounds and pools. We spent lots of time in the pool to escape the heat and the pool bar in the Sport hotel pool is great.. sat there for ages in the water drinking beer and was never too crowded unlike main hotel. No need to bring any towels as you are given two towel cards to get fresh towels every day from pool towel hut.
The entertainment was shocking as expected so dont expect broadway shows or anything.
ROOMS:
Rooms were very clean and spacious. Huge bed (a little hard but ok). We had a lovely pool view with balcony. Ask for a first floor room as the ground floor ones of course have a open terrace providing no privacy. Again a bonus for the sport side is that most rooms overlook the sport pool where as rooms in the main hotel mostly have garden or road views unless sea views are paid for. The air con worked very well and was lovely after being in sun all day. The TV had movie channels in english and news.Bathroom was very clean with bath and decent shower although beware if showering at a busy time ie between six and half seven, water is changable in temperature and power. Rooms are cleaned every day with fresh towels etc.
FOOD/DRINK:
It was typical basic all inclusive food and drink really. We have stayed in all inclusive resorts in the Carribean and this is no where near as good, but I think we have been spoilt by 5 star all inclusives where they really are all inclusive. The breakfast is ok.. beef bacon, chicken sausage, eggs, toast etc some other dodgy things too.. but never went hungry. We usually had lunch at the pool bar which was very nice.. the burgers were lovely. You can also have your lunch in the buffet restaurant but it is the same as the stuff at night. In the evening we only ate in the hotel once as we hate eating buffet evening meals that are the same every night.. we like waiter service in a nice restuarant with nice food and wine so we went out to Naama bay every night and had sone lovely Indian, Italian food.. not expensive and worth it!!
We did however try the Italian restaurant in the main hotel on the beach (payable but 40% discount for all inc) That was lovely.. proper Italian restaurant with half decent wine,
Drink wise.. the beer was not bad (Sakora Gold).. the wine was awful in the buffet restaurants and the local sprits were drinkable, but obvously no international brands are free ie smirnoff, jack daniels etc and are very expensive if you want them. One of our main complaints was that the All inclusive finished at 11pm and after that you have to pay.. its far too early as we often came in from Naama bay at eleven ish and then couldnt have a drink unless we paid for it!! What a Con!! Also the cocktails were payable which was a con as they are made from local spirits.
WEATHER:
Very hot!! On a couple of days the thermometer round the pool shower over 40 degrees. The mornings were lovely as it was hot but there was a nice breeze but the afternoons were too hot to lay in and we spent it in the pool. Evenings were warm, no need for cardiagns etc.. evening temp was 30 degrees. We has one overcast day but the rest was blue sky and sun.
LOCALITY/NAAMA BAY:
The hotel itself has nothing outside except the airport, a supermarket, souvenir shop and internet cafe. The hotel runs a free shuttle bus service to naama bay but are at set times and you have to book in advance.. we took a taxi most days (hotel taxi not the dodgy blue and white ones where you take your life into your own hands) It was about a fiver to Naama bay (15 mins drive) Namma bay is bustling with lots of restaurants, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Steakhouses etc and also national chains like TGI Fridays, Pizza Hut, KFC and Hard Rock Cafe. There are also three casinos (we spent a few nights in there) and lots of shops/bazaars etc.. lots of peole round our hotel were put off by Naama bay because they said they got hassled by shop owners etc.. Yes there is abit of hassle trying to get you into their shops, but a polite NO does the trick.. It is certainly no worse than any other holiday resort for this. Make sure you spend some nights in Naama bay to get away from the hotel at night as it is sooo boring.
OVERALL:
Not bad for a cheap week away.. Take extra money to get out of the hotel at night and enjoy some good food as Naama bay is great. Would find 2 weeks here too much. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
