Having read some of the more recent reviews, I didn't know quite what to expect - dodgy food, rude Russians, filthy sea etc. etc. - well none of these were even remotely true and we had a brilliant time.
It was my 2 daughters' first real holiday abroad and they didn't want to return at the end of it. Admittedly, despite the wealth of food options available in all the restaurants, they lived on pizza - but that wasn't the hotel's fault. Given that the hotel has 1300 guests at any one time, we felt that they did an excellent job with the food. It isn't cordon bleu and but the generally it was good to very good. I enjoyed the 'Oriental' (really Lebanese/Egyptian) restaurant the most but this was probably the least appealing for the kids. We compromised by visiting the Italian most.
We had a family room on the ground floor in block 11 and having thought we would all be sharing one room, it was a huge surprise to have an enormous room, with separate bedroom and loads of space. It was well worth paying the extra for the family room if you want some privacy from your offspring!
What really made the week enjoyable, though, was the attentiveness of the staff. A big thanks to Amar at the main pool for looking after us! As an all-inclusive, there is no requirement to spend any money at all, but give a few tips at the start of the stay and you will be very well looked after. We were told most of the staff work 16 hour days earning the equivalent of 10p per hour, so the tips really are important to them.
We also went on one of the full day snorkelling trips run by the Aqua Centre. The travel rep was a bit disparaging about these due to the sales pitch you get when sitting around the pool. But, the boats do go from the pier at the hotel (no coach journey required) and our main guide, Mohammed, was a top chap. We paid £30 per adult and £15 per child, this included equipment, lunch and drinks and we went snorkelling at 3 different reef sites, plus some time on a beach. It is a bit of a tourist hot spot - there are literally hundreds of boats, but as soon as you put the mask on and put your face under the surface, you can forget everything and just enjoy the experience. It was possible that you could have negotiated the price down a bit - you have to make your own mind up whether you think it is value for money. As there are no reefs accessible from the hotel, it is probably the only way you'll get to see the Red Sea properly.
