“Great beach - shocking service”

Iberotel Dahabeya

3 of 5 stars

Just got back from 2 weeks all inclusive at the Dahabeya in Dahab. I booked this hotel 4 months ago based on good reviews. I believe that the hotel has seriously gone downhill.

The hotel itself is spotlessly clean. The rooms are modern and functional if just a little bit small.
The beach and pool area and good with plenty of sunbeds and good positions if you are prepared to put your towels down before 08.30.

This is a fairly small hotel so the entertainment is pretty lacking. What there is can be a little irritating (although the Russian's seem to love it). We spent 2 weeks trying to avoid the animation team, but I suppose it depends what you're in to. There is a shuttle bus into Mazbat 3 times a day. This is the place with all the shops and restaurants. You cant walk there but there are taxis (both official and small trucks which will pick you up for around 15 Egyption pounds and which are perfectly safe). Food in town is cheap and usually good.

We ate in Mazbat every evening after trying to eat in the hotel. The food is pretty awful. Bland, unimaginative and very poor quality. When there is chicken it wil be legs and thighs (not the case in town). I appreciate that the hotel has to cater for many nationalities pallettes but tthe food quality was not acceptable. You have to order drinks at lunch from the waiter. You will probably have finished your meal before your drink arrives.

The experience with the food just about sums up the overall level of service. The management of this hotel are just trying to get as much money out of you as possible. They will charge you for any extra they can. There is only 1 bar open in the evenings and 1 person serving on it. Expect to wait up to half an hour for a drink. You will be invited for a free meal at the al a carte restaurant - dont go. The food (set menu of either BBQ or fish) is inedible. We had 4 drinks and had to pay for them. They totalled 35 English pounds!! A bottle of cheap sparking wine is 45 english pounds. We were the only people in the restaurant and we couldnt wait to leave.

Dahab is a windy place so expect to get sand blasted. There are (unusally for Egypt) mosquitos out at night so you will need repellant. There is a windsurfing school on the beach atttached to the hotel. If you want to learn, ask for Rob. Hes very good.

If you have to leave in the evening be warned. We had to get out of our room at 12.00 lunchtime and were allocated a 15 minute slot in a shared room for 2 of us to shower and change. If you pay 60 Euros you can keep your room until 6pm.

All in all, we had a fab holiday but only because of the weather and the fact that we went outside of the hotel. The manager in charge when this hotel had good reviews left 3 months ago and the hotel has gone downhill rapidly. We met people who go back year after year but who said they wouldnt go again. Go, but understand what you will get - a clean pleasant environment, great beach, pool etc but bad food and bad service. Dont pay too much for your room!

“Very good value 4 star”

Very good hotel for a 4 star. Very comfortable with good facilities and good selection of food although only stayed one week, a fortnight may have been too much. Not much to do besides watersports. Make sure when booking that you want Dahab as we thought we had booked Sharm but this hotel is in Dahab one hour ten minutes from airport through the mountains.

“great holiday”

Good for a 4 star, maybe the hilton would have been a bit nicer but this was a better option for the budget. food was quite good but got a bit repetitive over the week. really nice pool and pool area and good section of beach with umbrellas and wind shelters. the room was quite nice but maybe a bit tired. useful shuttle service to town. only downside was that some of the staff were a bit abupt, particularly the bar staff in the beach bar and a couple of the waiters. others were very friendly and helpful. a great place to stay if you have kids as the animation team keep them occupied with games, belly dancing lessons and evening entertainment.

“A lovely holiday”

Iberotel Dahabeya

4 of 5 stars
Midlands

We have just returned from a lovely week in Dahab, staying at this hotel. As it was our first trip to Egypt we weren't too sure what to expect, especially on the journey from the airport to Dahab, late at night, when it appeared we were going in to the middle of nowhere!

But we had nothing to worry about. First impressions of the hotel were that it was very clean and welcoming, and we were made to feel welcome by the reception staff who quickly organised everything for us and took us to our poolside room.

The room was very clean, a good size, tastefully decorated and had everything we needed. Towels and linen were changed every day by Mohammed, who was also a dab hand at folding the towels in to various shapes - flowers, swans, hearts etc!

The pool area was really nice and we never had a problem getting a sunbed. The hotel is right on the beach, with sunbeds on the beach and a beach bar. The sunbeds on the beach, whilst very nice, were quite close together and it could be quite difficult to get one unless you were out there to reserve one at about 8am!

You can walk out quite a long way in to the sea by the hotel, as it is quite shallow, and doesn't have too strong a current. However, it is absolutely full of windsurfers so there are only a couple of small areas for swimming and snorkelling, and in our experience the snorkelling wasn't fantastic. (If you are in to windsurfing or want to learn, it's great). However, we went on a quad bike trip to the 'Three Pools', where there is coral and the snorkelling was really good. There is also a place called the Blue Hole, which we didn't go to, but we heard that was also good for snorkelling and diving. If you go to the Three Pools, try and go early-ish in the morning (it's only about 15 minutes from the hotel by quad bike) as the light is better and it's quieter up there - we arrived at about 9.30am and it was quite quiet, but by 11am it was starting to get busy. There's a quad bike tour place just down the road from the hotel (Sinai Experts I think) which we'd definitely recommend for good, safe trips.

Food at the hotel was pretty good - we were half board and were a bit concerned that it would be a bit 'samey' (we usually go B&B on holiday and eat out), but there was a different theme every night and a reasonable amount of choice. Breakfast was pretty much the same every day, but that was ok. Everyone told us to be careful about tummy upsets, so we stayed away from anything that might have been washed in the water, and didn't have ice in our drinks, and we were fine all week.

The service was excellent - the staff were all very friendly and efficient and couldn't do enough for you.

There were lots of people of different nationalities there - Germans, Russians, Eastern Europeans - but it was kind of nice to be away from the 'Brits abroad'-type resorts!

The hotel does a shuttle bus in to Dahab town, which was good as it was quite a long walk, but the only thing is that it doesn't allow you very long before you are collected and brought back - we'd have liked a bit longer, as it is a lovely, ambient town. We'd definitely recommend a trip down there.

One downside - there were lots of mosquitos about; the hotel was very good and they sprayed at least once a day but it was difficult to get away from them. However, I used tropical strength repellent and that seemed to stop them biting. Don't wear any perfume!

Overall, we'd definitely recommend this hotel and Dahab for a relaxing holiday in lovely surroundings.
