Just got back from 2 weeks all inclusive at the Dahabeya in Dahab. I booked this hotel 4 months ago based on good reviews. I believe that the hotel has seriously gone downhill.
The hotel itself is spotlessly clean. The rooms are modern and functional if just a little bit small.
The beach and pool area and good with plenty of sunbeds and good positions if you are prepared to put your towels down before 08.30.
This is a fairly small hotel so the entertainment is pretty lacking. What there is can be a little irritating (although the Russian's seem to love it). We spent 2 weeks trying to avoid the animation team, but I suppose it depends what you're in to. There is a shuttle bus into Mazbat 3 times a day. This is the place with all the shops and restaurants. You cant walk there but there are taxis (both official and small trucks which will pick you up for around 15 Egyption pounds and which are perfectly safe). Food in town is cheap and usually good.
We ate in Mazbat every evening after trying to eat in the hotel. The food is pretty awful. Bland, unimaginative and very poor quality. When there is chicken it wil be legs and thighs (not the case in town). I appreciate that the hotel has to cater for many nationalities pallettes but tthe food quality was not acceptable. You have to order drinks at lunch from the waiter. You will probably have finished your meal before your drink arrives.
The experience with the food just about sums up the overall level of service. The management of this hotel are just trying to get as much money out of you as possible. They will charge you for any extra they can. There is only 1 bar open in the evenings and 1 person serving on it. Expect to wait up to half an hour for a drink. You will be invited for a free meal at the al a carte restaurant - dont go. The food (set menu of either BBQ or fish) is inedible. We had 4 drinks and had to pay for them. They totalled 35 English pounds!! A bottle of cheap sparking wine is 45 english pounds. We were the only people in the restaurant and we couldnt wait to leave.
Dahab is a windy place so expect to get sand blasted. There are (unusally for Egypt) mosquitos out at night so you will need repellant. There is a windsurfing school on the beach atttached to the hotel. If you want to learn, ask for Rob. Hes very good.
If you have to leave in the evening be warned. We had to get out of our room at 12.00 lunchtime and were allocated a 15 minute slot in a shared room for 2 of us to shower and change. If you pay 60 Euros you can keep your room until 6pm.
All in all, we had a fab holiday but only because of the weather and the fact that we went outside of the hotel. The manager in charge when this hotel had good reviews left 3 months ago and the hotel has gone downhill rapidly. We met people who go back year after year but who said they wouldnt go again. Go, but understand what you will get - a clean pleasant environment, great beach, pool etc but bad food and bad service. Dont pay too much for your room!
