Just stayed at the the hotel over the July 4 holiday weekend. I was a little nervous about booking the room considering some of the reviews but all in all I got what I paid for, and thats what you should expect.
The reason I stayed here was I didn't want to pay - minimum - TWICE the amount for a room at one of the big hotels. Rooms at the Taj were pushing 300 a night for the weekend rate. In general, room rates in AC go through the roof on the weekends, doubling or tripling in cost and I would personally rather spend my dough on something other than the hotel room. But enough about that. The hotel is 2 blocks from the beach/boardwalk. Check-in was quick. The hotel is obviously dated but they've worked at keeping the place up to date. The furniture in the room was new and in good shape. TV worked ok. No clock radio? (someone swipe it?) Iron/ironing board provided. Oh, ladies, there was no hair dryer. Plenty of ice in the ice machine. Shower had good pressure, plenty of consistent hot water. Coffee maker in the room. Bathroom was a little dated but clean. Wallpaper above tub starting to peel a little. The neighborhood isn't the greatest but that basically describes all of Atlantic City. The Taj is walking distance, 3 maybe 4 blocks. Sands hotel/Casino is in the other direction - 4 blocks. All in all I got what I paid for. The room was a hundred bucks a night when the competition was close to 300 for the same thing.
