“The rudest staff I have ever met!!”

Perak Hotel

I live in Asia and have travelled loads in this region but have never come across a hotel that were SO unhelpful. My friend booked it as a little change to the budget style accomodation we had previously been staying in. We moved from a very friendly budget hotel in Singapore to the Perak Hotel, which turned out to be a huge mistake.

I was shown the room and the amenties within that room when I arrived, when I tried to use the safe I found that I was unable to open it. I called downstairs to ask for some help where I was told to "read the instructions". I explained that I have already read the instructions and would appreciate some help the lady on the phone groaned and said ok. When she arrived at my room to assist she was extremely truculent and apeared bothered by my request. Later that day I asked one of the staff to turn the temperature of the ac unit down as I was too hot. He scolded me in a very loud voice saying “The temperature of the room is fine, it is hot outside. It will go down later” When I told him that I thought he was very rude and that I certainly didn’t appreciate being shouted at. He chuckled and said he didn’t shout then left the room without adjusting the ac.

Later in our stay we returned to the room to find that the cleaner had thrown out a large stack of wedding photographs that belonged to my friend. I went downstairs to find out what happened, only to be told by the gentleman behind the desk that it was “not his problem” he said he wasn’t the manager and could do nothing about it. He also said that if you left your belongs on the floor then they would be thrown out.(The photos weren’t on the floor) What was very confusing was the actual garbage in the room wasn’t removed during our entire stay! I asked to speak to the manager on the telephone, a request that was of course refused. Eventually the produced a cleaner who denied throwing out any photos but as he couldn’t speak any English and I couldn’t speak Chinese I was unclear about how much of the situation was undersood by him.

I definitely wouldn’t go back to stay in this hotel nor would I recommend it to others.

“Do not stay at this hotel”

For a hundred quid a night I did not expect to be shouted at and treated like a second-class citizen.

My friend and I had 2 nights in singapore and decided to splash out and spend a bit of money.

Every member of staff was rude and unhelpful and we would have laughed, were we not paying a lot for this privelige.

I left photos of my wedding out in the room and the cleaner threw them away.

When I was very upset and asked reception for help the duty manager said 'It's not my problem' then when i asked to speak to the manager he refused to be put on the phone.

This hotel is run by cowboys.

“Cosy and close to all”

It's hard to find budget accomodation in Singapore and Perak was reasonably priced compared to other hotels. Just inside Little India near a few backpackers places. Staff very accommodating and friendly.
Rooms were clean and were serviced daily with fresh linens, towels etc.

Our only gripe is that we didn't seem to get any hot water in the shower. This wasn't a major issue as it was always hot in singapore but just a bit of warmth in the shower would have been good.

“Lives up to its reputation”

We stayed at the Perak Hotel for three nights on the first stop of our round-the-world trip. It was a great start.

It's a renovated shophouse of 35 rooms in Little India - a location we chose for a not-so-Western experience of Singapore, that is still very accessible via the nearby Little India MRT station to the other precincts like Orchard Road, the river, etc. We had booked a standard room but had it upgraded for free to superior.

We loved the presentation of the hotel, from the polished floorboards to the blue painted shutters and the view from the stairwell landing windows of the brightly coloured buildings of Little India. (We could even hear an evening call to prayer from a nearby temple!) It is very clean. The airconditioning is very effective and makes the Perak Hotel a true oasis after a long day's sightseeing! Breakfast was included, served in the lovely breakfast room, and was mainly continental offerings but with some Singaporean elements, like kaya (Singapore's answer to marmalade, made of egg and coconut).

If you are used to a hot shower like me, you will find that the shower in the room is quite tepid even on the highest temperature setting, but I found this to be a positive in fact - it is very refreshing in the humidity and stops the bathroom from fogging up. The bed was comfortable, though on the firm side. The other caveat I would offer is that there is no lift, so if you have mobility problems, you may struggle with the stairs.

The only small gripes were that there was no soap provided in the bathroom at all (but this was easily overcome), and that the wireless internet in our room dropped out from time to time.

We would definitely stay at the Perak Hotel again.

“Disappointing”

Perak Hotel

London, United Kingdom

It's a pretty little hotel and it's in a good location with good access to the metro on the airport line and the other sights of Singapore. But the negatives outweighed the positives:
- It was an absolutely tiny room. Two people might fit - but not with luggage!
- Noisy. Oh my goodness so noisy. Our upstairs neighbours were checking out 4.30 am so for over an hour from 3.30am it sounded like a herd of elephants trampling on our ceiling.
- Customer service was lousy. Very unfriendly staff who made us feel like we were interrupting them when we checked in. Also, I rang the desk at 4am asking if they could ask our upstairs neighbours to be a bit more quiet but their response was 'they're checking out soon'.
Fine if you've got nowhere better to stay but I'd say look elsewhere first.
