We stayed at the Perak Hotel for three nights on the first stop of our round-the-world trip. It was a great start.
It's a renovated shophouse of 35 rooms in Little India - a location we chose for a not-so-Western experience of Singapore, that is still very accessible via the nearby Little India MRT station to the other precincts like Orchard Road, the river, etc. We had booked a standard room but had it upgraded for free to superior.
We loved the presentation of the hotel, from the polished floorboards to the blue painted shutters and the view from the stairwell landing windows of the brightly coloured buildings of Little India. (We could even hear an evening call to prayer from a nearby temple!) It is very clean. The airconditioning is very effective and makes the Perak Hotel a true oasis after a long day's sightseeing! Breakfast was included, served in the lovely breakfast room, and was mainly continental offerings but with some Singaporean elements, like kaya (Singapore's answer to marmalade, made of egg and coconut).
If you are used to a hot shower like me, you will find that the shower in the room is quite tepid even on the highest temperature setting, but I found this to be a positive in fact - it is very refreshing in the humidity and stops the bathroom from fogging up. The bed was comfortable, though on the firm side. The other caveat I would offer is that there is no lift, so if you have mobility problems, you may struggle with the stairs.
The only small gripes were that there was no soap provided in the bathroom at all (but this was easily overcome), and that the wireless internet in our room dropped out from time to time.
We would definitely stay at the Perak Hotel again.
