“Lives up to its reputation”

We stayed at the Perak Hotel for three nights on the first stop of our round-the-world trip. It was a great start.

It's a renovated shophouse of 35 rooms in Little India - a location we chose for a not-so-Western experience of Singapore, that is still very accessible via the nearby Little India MRT station to the other precincts like Orchard Road, the river, etc. We had booked a standard room but had it upgraded for free to superior.

We loved the presentation of the hotel, from the polished floorboards to the blue painted shutters and the view from the stairwell landing windows of the brightly coloured buildings of Little India. (We could even hear an evening call to prayer from a nearby temple!) It is very clean. The airconditioning is very effective and makes the Perak Hotel a true oasis after a long day's sightseeing! Breakfast was included, served in the lovely breakfast room, and was mainly continental offerings but with some Singaporean elements, like kaya (Singapore's answer to marmalade, made of egg and coconut).

If you are used to a hot shower like me, you will find that the shower in the room is quite tepid even on the highest temperature setting, but I found this to be a positive in fact - it is very refreshing in the humidity and stops the bathroom from fogging up. The bed was comfortable, though on the firm side. The other caveat I would offer is that there is no lift, so if you have mobility problems, you may struggle with the stairs.

The only small gripes were that there was no soap provided in the bathroom at all (but this was easily overcome), and that the wireless internet in our room dropped out from time to time.

We would definitely stay at the Perak Hotel again.

“Disappointing”

Perak Hotel

It's a pretty little hotel and it's in a good location with good access to the metro on the airport line and the other sights of Singapore. But the negatives outweighed the positives:
- It was an absolutely tiny room. Two people might fit - but not with luggage!
- Noisy. Oh my goodness so noisy. Our upstairs neighbours were checking out 4.30 am so for over an hour from 3.30am it sounded like a herd of elephants trampling on our ceiling.
- Customer service was lousy. Very unfriendly staff who made us feel like we were interrupting them when we checked in. Also, I rang the desk at 4am asking if they could ask our upstairs neighbours to be a bit more quiet but their response was 'they're checking out soon'.
Fine if you've got nowhere better to stay but I'd say look elsewhere first.

“Cozy place”

Perak Hotel

A very nice place with friendly staff, we felt at home immediatly. There were refrigerator, coffee-making facilities, big mirrors, good beds and a nice little bathroom where they chanced towels every day when they cleaned the room nicely.
Futhermore it is situated on the edge of Little India, which is at cozy and inexpensive neighbourhood.
The breakfast was not so big, but it was there, and okay.
Also remember, the price for a room is very cheap.

“Great stopover hotel”

Perak Hotel

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on a stopover and was reasonably impressed with the rooms and service, although I noticed another customer seemed to have trouble checking in. Rooms were lovely although wooden floors meant you could sometimes hear others walking around. I would recommend this hotel for those on a budget who would prefer something different to the average chain hotel. The location is fine for getting to attractions as the MRT is just down the road.

“Great atmosphere”

Perak Hotel

Mar 4, 2008

We stayed at the Perak Hotel in February 2008 as we had booked a stopover in Singapore on our way to Bali. On our arrival they told us, that we got upgraded because they had no more rooms in the category we booked. The room was just special and wonderful. Over some stairs you reached the two beds, we also had flatscreen and a nice bathroom. The service was great and very polite, even though the breakfast ist really a little simple. But that doesn't matter, you have lots of stores and restaurants around and the Indian Paan is always worth to eat it ;) From the hotel you also have a good connection to the subways and all sights. The value for money is awesome! I can highly recommend the hotel for your stopover in Singapore! Another nice thing: I forgot my jacket and a sweater there and the staff is so kind to ship it back - great service..!
