“Comfortable business class hotel”

Amara Singapore Hotel

3 of 5 stars

SUMMARY:
An average business hotel with all the expected amenities. No special character, but a pleasant and reasonably comfortable stay. Would have no problems staying here again if needed, but at this price range there are plenty of alternatives to choose from that will offer likely similar experiences. I will be trying another hotel next time in Singapore as there was nothing particular about this hotel that draws you back. Overall though, the stay was comfortable enough.

SERVICE:
Overall, no complaints. Our arrival at midnight was pleasant since there were no surprises - check-in was smooth and quick. The bell staff on hand was eager to suggest nearby late night eating options with us, which was helpful after 28 hours of airplane food. There weren't any other service points to speak of, as we didn't make any special requests or require any special attention, but overall the staff was polite, friendly, and made our stay comfortable.

LOCATION:
Not central (i.e., not located near Orchard Road) but very practically located nonetheless: 5 minute walk to the closest subway (MRT), as well as a 5 minute walk to the Maxwell Food Centre, which is an amazing experience for foodies (rows of outdoor stalls under one large compound roof) for varied, local, and cheap & delicious fare. We were able to get everywhere we wanted to go quickly via the extensive MRT routes, thus the placement is quite ideal while not being extremely busy right outside the hotel door. The hotel is quite close to Chinatown, however, so eating options abound within 10-15 minutes of walking.
Approx 20 minute Taxi ride to the airport if arriving after 11:30 PM, otherwise, the MRT does stop right inside the airport for an extremely cheap alternative (although quite a bit lengthier - it took about 1 hour to get to the airport via this method.)

HOTEL GROUNDS:
The hotel itself is modern and classy enough for a business hotel. No complaints. The pool is beautiful and wonderfully relaxing - as close to a mid-city oasis that a standard business hotel pool can be. You will not find a nicer outdoor pool of this style at any similarly priced hotels in Singapore. The pool is large enough to do laps, as well as being a wonderul place to just relax.

ROOMS & ACCOMODATION
The room feels slightly on the smaller side, for two poeple. The space is functional, but not overly spacious. The bathroom, on the other hand, is spacious and beatifully laid in marble, and feels quite luxurious, with both marble shower and separate tub for bathing. The beds were average firm.

CLEANLINESS:
The room itself was clean and spotless, but the bathroom was dirtier than what you would expect from a business class hotel (example: we had to re-clean our toilet seat.) Bathroom amenities were replaced daily.

Viva the Singapore Sling!

“Did not really feel at home”

We stayed at the Amara Singapore for three days and were given a polite but not very warm welcome. After the friendliness and warmth of the staff at the Furama in Da Nang and the Angkor Century in Siem Reap, this was like a cold shower. The room was ok, the front desk staff not very helpful when it came to asking information about sights and maps. The atmosphere in the breakfast room was not very nice, I would even call it unpleasant. All in all we did not really feel at home. The Amara may be conveniently located for business travellers but I would not recommend it to tourists.

“Great Hotel / Nice location”

Amara Singapore Hotel

Me and my bestfriend visited Singapore from August 25-30 2007 and we stayed at the Amara Singapore Hotel. I generally recommend this hotel as it is very accessible to most of the public transportations. From the Singapore Intl Airport (SIA) you can take the MRT at terminal 2. Take the MRT and transfer at Tanah Merah interchange, then take the train going to Boon Lay and alight at Tanjong Pagar Station. Easy, fast and covenient. Would cost you only around (S$2.70/trip) Temporary train cards are refundable at the airport and you get your S$1 back.

Once you alight at Tanjong Pagar Station find the exit and look for Exit A (Amara Hotel) turn left to Peak Seah Street -- follow the road around the bend, turn left onto Tanjong Pagar Road. Its a 5-minute walk from the station. Very easy to find!

Best of all, the hotel is very accessible to taxis and buses. Bus stops just infront of the hotel. Fronting the hotel are several local stores like 7-11 convenient stores, local stores that sells local goods , bank, a money changer (higher deals than in the hotel), local restaurants with great food.

Just beside the hotel, is a mall and fast-food restaurants (Subway, Burger king etc) , watsons and a relatively nice specialty shops. Nice bargains!

Hotel staffs are great! Friendly and helpful. Hotel rooms are fine typical of just any other 4-star hotels. Though I would say that the bathroom is not properly maintained. They could have cleaned / polished the bathrooms so that the rust wouldnt be seen. Housing keeping is ok.

What else could I say? This hotel is great for families, business travelers or simply for budget consious travelers.

“A catalogue of errors”

Amara Singapore Hotel

Aug 2, 2007

We were recommended the Amara by friends, who had a fantastic stay there. I can't say the same sadly! Check in was a shambles. Of our 3 nights there, we were woken at 7am by alarm calls we hadn't requested - THEN - on the final day when we DID request an alarm call in order to catch out flight, we didn't receive it! The plug got stuck in the bath on out second evening, while it was full. We informed reception of this at 5pm and, when we returned to our room at 3am we found it was still stuck, and full of dirty, cold bath water! We had also booked a taxi for the airport through the concierge the night before we left. We were informed it would be $x, which we kept aside in the currency. When it was 10 minutes overdue we started to panic, but no one seemed keen to chase it up. Then it transpired that it hadn't been booked at all. So they called another one, which turned out to be an executive airport car - we only knew this when we got to the airport (with very very little time to spare for our flight by now) and were charged twice as much as the Amara had quoted! Luckily the driver accpeted credit cards - if not we would surely have missed the flight.

Overall the hotel was lovely aesthetically, and very clean, but the service and organisation were very poor.

“Good location and service”

I stayed in the Amara on my way to and from Vietnam in March and April 2007. I booked the hotel from the Singapore Stopover brochure and was a bit concerned when I read the previous negative review, But the hotel was a good choice. This was my fourth visit to Singapore. I'm not a shopper, and I was keen to explore Chinatown this time. The location of the hotel was great. It was also one of the quietest hotels I've stayed in. And it's close to the Maxwell Rd hawker stalls and the Blue Ginger restaurant where the food is excellent. There is an MRT a few minutes away. My rooms on both visits were clean and comfortable, though a lingering smell of smoke makes me suspect that people still smoke in the non smoking rooms. I found the concierges very helpful and the service excellent.
