I have stayed in many hotels in Singapore. This is not a boast, it is simply a result of my relentless search to find the perfect hotel in a city that thrives on business and tourist travel above all else!!
The Shangri-la is a good hotel, it is not a great hotel. It is large, busy and the only thing from making it feel totally impersonal are the attentive staff (which you get in most top hotels in Asia - wake up Europe to how things should be done!!)
The Shangri-la is slightly dated, it has lush gardens with a huge pool (lovely if you like crowds) the Line restaurant is manicly busy but the buffet is superb. The rooms have hessian wall coverings, cheap wardrobes and baths suited to kids under the age of 5. It is all a bit late 1980's.
What Singapore needs is a hotel with a sense of intimacy with rooms refurbished to today's standards. The Fullerton is one, but too much in the business district. There are better hotels than the Shangri-La and I apologise to the sweet and attentive staff in saying so.

“Absolute Class!”

This was our second visit to Singapore and although we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Oriental the first time round, we wanted a change of scenery. We'd read good things about the Shangri-La and this was our third stay in a SL hotel so we had a high level of expectation.

Without any hesitation, I can say that this hotel was fantastic, easily the best Shangri-La we've been to and the best 5 star city hotel we've stayed at in the Far East.

We were welcomed by a number of staff on arrival and whisked over to the Garden Wing. We were taken straight to our room where check-in took place and our bags were delivered. Shortly afterwards, complimentary tea and fruit was brought to our room. Everything was done efficiently and professionally - ideal after a long flight. We didn't feel like we were in a large city hotel and the staff deserve credit for this from the way they welcomed us and the check-in process.

The room was large and nicely decorated with a large veranda (we had a corner room). The bed was huge and very comfortable. The mini-bar was expensive though.

The Garden wing has a resort ambiance with outdoor covered walkways, a central garden, pond and waterfall. It has good access to the pool. The pool is quite large and the area around is really pretty. My only criticism is that on the weekends, it was difficult to get a sun lounger and perhaps more are needed during busy times. On weekdays, it was much quieter.

We only ate in The Line which is an amazing buffet with a wide range of cuisines. Make sure you are hungry to take full advantage of them and to especially make the most of the chocolate fountain! Breakfast is equally as good with a good range of fruit juices, lassi, eggs however you want them, asian food, fresh waffles and pancakes with fresh honey and much more!

We had one drink in the Blu bar, which was expensive but on the top floor so you get a different view of the city. We did receive a voucher towards the drinks by filling in a guest review form so it worked out at a reasonable price for us.

We took taxis to most places which are cheap and we walked down to the Orchard Road on some occasions. It takes around 5-10 minutes.

In general, the service was of a high standard and consistent, the food was excellent as were the rooms. The pool was really good for both swimming and relaxing too. I will be returning to Singapore if only to stay in the Shangri-La. And for the chocolate fountain of course!

“Genuine Touch”

Shangri-La Hotel

Stayed for 3 nights and very impressed with genuine customer service. Staff went out of their way to at least smile and greet at every opportunity and were knowledgable and helpful. Standard of rooms were very good even in tower wing. General ambience was quite appealing with nice pool and central oasis area. A bit out of the way but taxis are so cheap and comfortable it was worth being a bit removed from the hustle and bustle of Orchard Rd. Attention to detail did not go unnoticed, down to washing detergent sachets in bathroom.

“Best Hotel Ever”

Shangri-La Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Liverpool, United Kingdom

We stayed here as the first part of our honeymoon (a stop off on the way to Australia). We arrived feeling a little dejected as the “worlds’ favourite airline” managed to lose our luggage for what turned out to be our whole 3 day stay. We were very impressed with the reception area and when we were booking in we were then asked if we would like to upgrade our room (it worked out at about £30 per night extra). I thought I was getting the usual spiel but I was that fed up, I accepted. All I can say it is the best £30 per night extra I have EVER spent. We were given a large suite, rose petals on the bed in the shape of a heart, cake, Chinese tea, the full works. When the hotel found out about our luggage situation we were given a complimentary clean T Shirt and a wash bag. The upgrade also gave up membership to the Horizon Club. This was a private members area on the top floor. Complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, internet access and phone use (essential for us at the time) and a huge lounge. Imagine a business class lounge at an airport and you’re almost there.

We ate at the Line restaurant. Very stylish and excellent food (and value). We didn’t use the pool but it did look very good.

This mush have been the most friendly and efficient hotel I have ever stayed in and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone

“Unbelievable!”

Shangri-La Hotel

5 of 5 stars

Wow! This was amazing! We stayed here because of reviews on here and were not disappointed! I, however, have not stayed in many really plush hotels - so maybe that negates my opinion a little?!

We were in the Valley Wing where nothing is too much trouble. We enjoyed the complimentary canapes and drinks that were served every day in the lounge. There is a separate entrance for residents of the wing and the reception is stunning.

The room was gorgeous - large bathroom and bed, beautiful view of the pool, very spacious. It was serviced at several points during the day, including when they turn down your bed for the night and leave handmade chocolates on the pillows. There were even business cards printed up with my name on them and left in the desk drawer.

The staff were amazingly helpful - tipping is expected for certain services, such as the porter.

The only thing I would say is that it IS expensive - and there were a few charges that we hadn't thought about such as the tax that they add to your total bill, and the gratuities that get automatically added to every service that you use. (For example, they add gratuity for the room service if I remember rightly).

However, I suppose that if you're in a place like this, you might expect these things?

Would love to stay here again, but I think this might have been a "once in a lifetime" opportunity!
