Reading through these reviews, I think I must be the only one who didn't get upgraded to an executive room on arrival! Instead I got a twin room on the fifth floor. First impressions were not good, as the porters were so keen to get a tip I virtually had to wrestle my luggage off them. Check in was pretty smooth though.
Up to the room then, and I thought I had taken a wrong turn - had to pass through some industrial-style metal double doors and down an unpainted corridor with cardboard boxes lining the floor. I thought I had entered a staff only area, but apparently not.
The room itself was a decent size, but disappointing in quality. This is supposed to be one of the best hotels in Singapore, but I found the room to be more motel-style than a luxury hotel standard. It was clean, but very basic. No mini-bar, old-style TV with only a few uninspiring channels, no pay-TV, no bath, shower was lukewarm at best. The in-room safe was not working. In-room broadband is available, but rather exorbitantly priced. Luckily with the government of Singapore providing free city-wide WiFi, there's really no need to pay for internet use.
Breakfast is expensive, but you get it free if you stay 3 or more nights. Just as well, if I had paid I would have complained, as it was easily the worst I have ever eaten at a high-class hotel. Ended up skipping the other days.
On the positive side, it does have a superb location - on the edge of Chinatown, just across the road from an MTR subway station, and just 10 minutes walk to the oh-so-trendy nightlife area of Clarke's Quay, where you can sip overpriced drinks with the rich and beautiful at glamorous riverside venues that rival any in London or New York.
So, motel-style luxury, but a great location made up for it. Just. Wouldn't stay again.
