“Nice hotel”

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Four Marks, ALTON, UK
May 1, 2008

We were travelling with our 2 young sons (12 & 9) and our travel agent made a reservation for a room with at least 2 double beds to accomodate all 4 of us. Unfortunately this hotel does not apparently have rooms like this. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted and told that we had been given a complimentary upgrade to a Suite on the 25th floor. So far so good. Unfortunately we found the room only contained 1 x King bed plus 1 x fold away bed. At 2300 Hrs after a 9 hour flight from Sydney this is the last thing we needed. A return visit to Reception involved a protracted discussion over the fact that despite accepting our booking from our travel agent, the hotel did not have rooms for 4 persons and who would pay the $50 required for them to put a 2nd fold-away bed in the room. (us or our travel agent). A rather petty position for the hotel to adopt in my opinion but a very helpful Duty Manager accepted that this was the responsibility of our Travel Agent. Once this was resolved , the 2nd fold-away bed arrived very quickly and easily fitted into the Suite with a little re-arranging of the furniture. The room was nicely furnished and the bathroom was particularly well appointed with separate bath and large shower.

Our rate included Breakfast and this was good, with a wide selection available including, "Full English, Omelettes cooked to order, Continental and Asian options. In my opinion, apart from the view, this hotel was superior to the previous hotel on this trip,
the Shangri-la, Sydney.

“Excellent”

Securing a discount rate, I expected that we would stay in the hotel's worst room.

Check in was quick and efficient considering we were first-time guests.

Perhaps Lady Luck or my guardian angel was smiling, but the room was terrific: quiet, good bed with crisp linen, a great bathroom and suffcient toiletries.

The swimming pool was first class, and pool towels readily available as were hot showers after the dip.

After a good sleep and an adequate if not outstanding breakfast, I departed lugging a suitcase along the river. This would be my only minor criticism: a bit far from the MRT but to be fair, there are nearby bus stops.

“Not worth the $$”

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel

It's fine and clean but even with the exorbitant rates in Singapore, I don't think this should be classified as a 4-star hotel. The public areas are quite nice but the rooms need total upgrades. Stains on the walls, dingy, banged up furniture, dark bathrooms. Unfortunately, I landed in Singapore during a HUGE conference so most other hotels were booked and this was a high rate of $250 a night, not including breakfast. My one big complaint would be the breakfast - I don't know if it's to hurry people up, but seriously, the loudest piped in music I've ever heard. Gulped down coffee and got out of there quick!

“Really Dumpy”

Paid US $320 for the Superior room which was moldy, smelly and basically the type of room you would get at a US $100 Days Inn. Complained but couldn't get upgraded to anything better. I would highly recommend not to stay here for more than it is worth (US $100). Great service, nice lobby but this doesn't compensate at all (the location is really bad too).

“Club Room: Great service and good value”

Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel

Feb 4, 2008

We booked the Grand Copthorne through Qantas online which seemed to have the best deal going for an executive club room in Singapore for the period of time we where there (8 nights Jan to Feb)

We had a room with king size bed on the top floor (30) and although not the largest it was certainly reasonable size. The bathroom had a separate shower (unlike previous review below), bath with shower attachments, etc. Decent array of toiletries (razor, toothbrush, etc). The rooms must all differ slightly in configuration.

I agree with the review below that the electricity does shut off when you remove the key card, but that is the same for many hotels I've experienced in Europe and Australia. The air conditioning does keep going, so the room was always a good temperature.

There is a port at the writing desk for broadband and two electricity points, but could do with more given the amount of gadgets we seem to have (2 laptops, mobile phones, etc), let alone wanting to boil the kettle for tea/coffee.

With regard to the tea and coffee complaints made in earlier reviews, yes there are only 2 of everything provided, but we found that housekeeping was more than happy to supply us with more. On the night we arrived we rang and requested extra supplies and proper milk. These were sent up very quickly and with no fuss (or charge). Housekeeping came both morning and evening and replenished and refreshed the rooms as required.

As per previous review there was the free broadband provided in the room (although you have to go through the process of signing up to a plan - we didn't get charged) although I'm not sure if the freebie was only for a short time. We used the laundry service nearly every day taking advantage of the 2 free pieces.
Also free soft drinks and juice from the minibar.

The best part of the stay at the hotel was the facility of the executive club lounge on level 29 and the service we received from the wonderful staff that worked there ( thank you Lydia, Johnathon, Jaya, Delilah, Lydia, Al-Zafik, Yousif and Himirami). Breakfast is included for Club room and is served in the lounge from about 7 till 10 every morning. The buffet selection isn't huge, but there was a choice of British, European and Asian plus the ability to order the usual eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato and hash browns. There never seemed to be more than half a dozen people in at a time, so a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Tea, coffee, juice and soft drinks are available throughout the day (FOC) and there are complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres from 6pm to 8pm. There was one evening we were so tired from sight seeing that we ended up snacking out on the hors d'oeuvres as a light supper.

Yes the hotel is slightly further out (but so are Mirimar, Furama Riverfront, Holiday Inn which were all next door or across the road), but a taxi up to Orchard Road was about S$5 and there is a free shuttle bus running between these hotels, Orchard Rd and Clark Quay MRT. The hotel is right on the river and you can walk along and across the foot bridge to Robinson Quay (8-10 mins) and Clarke Quay (15 mins) for lunch or dinner. If you want a taxi then you never had to wait long at the door before one arrives.

I found the business service center well organised and very efficient.

I don't know if I would have enjoyed the hotel as much had we not been in a club room. The staff in the Executive Club Lounge were wonderful dealing with all our little requests (eg the milk, band aids, etc) and making us feel very welcome. If you can afford the extra $$ then it's definitely a hotel to put on your shortlist.
