We have stayed in this hotel over the last 15 years, probably about 18 times in all. Originally, it was an excellent hotel, with many staff who had been their a long time, things worked, check-in and -out was civilised and reservations honoured. Last year, the hotel, its staff and facilities were noticeably shaky, and this year they were appalling. On check in (de luxe king room, Grand Tower) we were told that this tower was closed, and were shown a pokey room in the south tower. The porter advised us to try again, and I spoke to a manager, who immediately changed the booking to that which we had ordered.
It is noticeable that despite renovations, the carpets are tired, worn and nasty, and the old staff have been replaced by young recruits from China, and this is the same situation in reception. There are a lot of these girls in distinctive red cheongsams hanging around the lobby, grinning, but unable to answer any query. I speak some Mandarin, and their origin was apparent.
We shall not be staying there any more. Regarding breakfast, walk across Orchard Rd to Starbucks, instead of an expensive scrum in the hotel.
