“Quarky but cool place to stay”

Mingle Place

4 of 5 stars
San Francisco
May 22, 2008

I stayed here recently for four nights in a twin room (2 beds). The hotel is located in TST near the wedding boutiques on Kimberley Rd and very walkable from the TST MTR. It is situated uphill from Kimberley; alternatively, you can use the Knutsford Terr. as a pass through from Nathan Rd. which maybe easier if your mobility is a concern. To get to the hotel, the easiest and fastest is to take the MTR Airport Express to Kowloon Station then take a cab to the hotel. Be sure to print the location of the hotel in Chinese or ask the driver for the Empire Hotel Kowloon, Mingle Place is uphill from this hotel.

I expected the hotels in HK to be the size of a large suburban walk in closet in the States and it's true; the sleeping area of the room is about 7 ft by 10 ft only enough for two firm twin beds and a small nightstand. A large LCD TV is hooked up to the hotel's server with on-demand older/dated movies and music in English and Chinese, most movies were subtitled with Chinese. I was slightly disappointed the hotel didn't include a iPod dock since it dubbed itself a "tech hotel."

Instead of a wall separating the room and bathroom, frosted glass was used (I think to save space and add to the esthetic's of the room). Be sure you are comfortable with your companion since the frosted glass is revealing. The bathroom consist of tasteful modern fixtures, shower, and toilet; although the sliding bathroom door is also frosted (think sliding patio door), it didn't close nor lock properly. One other disappointment, the shower didn't include a LCD TV as advertised, instead there was a metal sheet covering where the TV would have been.

Surprisingly, there is also a mini fridge and a narrow but usable closet near the entrance. Internet is also available through ethernet or wifi.

Mingle Place

Apr 22, 2008

Very small rooms, 2 people and 1suitcase mad itt impossible to move . with hard beds, no privacy from bathroom - perspex..
great tv and some hi tech stuff but at the end of a hard day shopping all you want to do is collapse and sleep not play with sound system.
was good location but very very steep short road to get to hotel - which broke my trolley bag !! . interesting little area with some odd people hanging around !! we had breakfast one day at the hotel on corner Empire more western breakfast but priccy .
on web page says has restaurants but when we took lift to them there was nothing but blank walls !! biazare like a scene from being John Malkovivh !!
Only recommend if you cant get anywhere else - like us as it was the silly football sevens game or something !!

Hi Jane,

That would be the Hong Kong Sevens, a pretty popular rugby match...

I agree with you. I find my hotel quite strange sometimes... just want to provide something "different" to people that may want a change of taste...

The restaurants are accessible through *another* lift in the front of the hotel -- the see-through glass lift that only goes up to 4/F. If you take the hotel lift, you'll get to the *back* of these restaurants...

And the "blank wall" you found was probably the back of the 4/F...

Next time if you decide to stay here again, let me know (quote my name Stephen Chung when you book) and I'll take you on a short tour of the place...

Cheers,
Stephen

“Small but well equipped”

I stayed here with my girlfriend in March 2008. The location is very good, a short walk from the shops and restaurants along Nathan Rd and about 5 minutes walk from Tsim Sha Tsui station.

I must say we were a little underwhelmed when we checked in - the staff seemed indifferent to our presence, and although the hotel has been renovated recently it is still obvious that it is an older building. The room was very small - we are travelling with two backpacks and with these on the floor, there was nowhere to stand so we basically had to get into the room and lie on the bed.

The bathroom is small but adequate, however as a previous reviewer has mentioned, only share a room with a fellow traveller if you are very comfortable together (ie a partner) as the frosted glass between the bed and the shower leaves nothing to the imagination.

On the plus side, the entertainment system was good after a long day shopping as there were plenty of movies on demand (and free) on the 42" plasma TV. Airconditioning was controlled through the TV menu too - took a little while to work out how to use everything but once we got the hang of it, it was pretty good.

There is a laundromat downstairs which was convenient and a number of cheap eateries around the corner.

The flat panel speakers were a little unimpressive too, although I wonder whether I had them set at an incorrect angle or it was a poor DVD - a couple of the movies we tried to watch were unintelligible.

The pool area was closed during our stay which was a shame.

All in all, despite some shortcomings (room size, frosted glass, closed pool), the room was functional and served its purpose for what we wanted - and what we paid which was about USD$100 per night, quite a good rate considering the location.

Would I stay here again? Not if I could afford to spend more on a 'proper' hotel with bigger rooms. But on a tight budget, then yes.

“Room too small”

Stayed in standard room and there is nowhere to store suitcases - in fact no room to store anything. Would not stay there again unless I was on my own and even then unlikely. Room however was clean and location was good.

“Electronic Heaven”

Mingle Place

We had been roving around the hotels in Hong Kong due to a hotel shortage. We could only get one or 2 nights in any place so I am quite well qualified to comment on hotels in HK - between the ones we did stay at and the ones we looked at but couldn't get a room in I must have seen rooms at 10 different hotels.

The Mingle is awesome! The rooms are small but keep in mind that rooms in HK are just really small! Don't expect too much in the budget to mid level range when they say "double bed". I've seen single beds that are bigger than the doubles at some hotels.

Whats good about the Mingle:
* the torrential shower (I may travel like a backpacker but I like my strong hot showers)
* very central location and close to shops (mainly wedding stores) and restaurants. Short walk to Tsim Sha Tsui
* the price - great value for bduge accomodations
* guys will love the electronic everything - all controled through the TV (did I mention the TV in the shower?)
* the huge and comfy queen bed
* Above all else - the place is super clean! So new and clean, which is even more rare than a cheap hotel room in HK.

One thing to watch out for. Only book this place if you are super comfortable with your travel buddy. The place is uber modern and has a frosted glass bathroom. Of course it makes everything fuzzy but if you are taking a shower with someone sitting on the bed (right on the other side of the glass) they can still see quite a lot! I can imagine that guys might check in liking the electronic gagetry but then the voyeur feel to the bathroom situation might be a challenge for some.
