“A Clean Little Place To Stay”

Dorsett Olympic Hotel

Okay. It was small, but it was clean. For me, clean trumps big. some friends of ours stayed at another hotel (the imperial) and it was more like a western hotel, the lobby was clean, but the room was old and moldy. the dorsett olympic was clean, quaint, and quiet. it was near shopping areas and the train station was right around the corner. and hong kong has one of the most comprehensive train systems i've ever seen. we were only there 4 days and by the time we left i felt like a pro on the subway. as long as you know what station you want to go to you'll have no problem getting to where you need to be. the only bad thing about the dorsett was the "buffet" . it was supposed to be a western style breakfast buffet, but it was a nasty collection of snack food and odd sides. i mean like hot dogs, dumplings, croissants, baked beans, and spam. certainly not worth the price. but no fear. if you want something a little more like breakfast there's a mcdonalds right around the corner and they have sausage mcmuffins. other than that i have no complaints. the beds were slightly smaller than what we call a twin bed in america and at 5'3" if i scooched down too low my feet hung off the bed, but my hubby's 6' 1" and he had no complaints about his bed. it was a fun way to experience a little bit of asian living. think and live simple and small.

“Shockingly Basic”

The pictures you see are of a "Standard Room" on the 19th floor. Unfortunately I had booked a "KING" room, and ended up being given a twin room instead. The check in process was enjoyable, the people very polite. I arrived however at 9:15pm and was starving. Front desk told me last order allowed is at 9:30. When I called to order, they told me "Sorry were closed", a half hour early.

The room was clean, nicely put together, and tiny, but comfortable. Beds were of course hard (welcome to Asia), but the pillows were nice. Best of all, it was quiet. Until the family with 3 kids arrived. The hallways are not carpeted, and the doors are on springs that slam them shut. This makes for the sound of explosions throughout the night, coming from the hallways, as these 3 kids went back and forth between the various rooms. I called the front desk and they sent someone up. I tried to suggest in English that they just call the parents room, but he did not understand me. The noise continued for a couple hours despite the hotel person coming up to try and intercept them. The bathrooms are small, the showers are so small you cannot bend over (dont drop the soap!).

If you are a heavy sleeper, and just need somewhere to crash for the night, this might be a good solution. The hotel is i guess considered convenient to the airport (you have to take a train from the terminal for about 15 solid minutes, and then a taxi to the hotel). But this is common for hong kong airport. If you are a light sleeper, and dont mind the noise, Id suggest somewhere else. For the cost however ($68 USD) I was happy enough to endure the explosions and got an okay night sleep. Definitely not somewhere I would go for pleasure however.

“On balance very good for price”

Dorsett Olympic Hotel

4 of 5 stars
San Diego, USA
Apr 1, 2008

Based on the limited information in earlier reviews, I was pleasantly surprised with my stay at the Dorsett. Yes, the beds are very firm, and the rooms very small and the air conditioning does not seem to have a heating option. On the other hand...

*They let us check in at 9am when we arrived intending only to drop off our bags from the airport.
*Brought us a good quality baby bed, gratis, for our 10 month old.
*Air Conditioning filters out smoke smells well. (We wanted a non-smoking room and ended up on a smoking floor--there are only about 3 NS floors in the 20 floors of the hotel--but did not have a problem with smoke smells, except when we turned the AC off and the gentleman in the room next door lit up. Turning the AC back on quickly alleviated the odours).
*Staff throughout were efficient and courteous.
*Considerable arrange of room amenities on hand (tooth brush, comb, in room safe, etc. in addition to usual shampoo and soap)
*Well located between MRT stations (Olympic a quick 5 min walk, Mong Gok about 10/15 min walk the other direction). (They have an airport shuttle too, but the MRT was sufficient for our needs)
*Plenty of local food/shopping easily accessible in blocks around hotel.

I would not recommend the breakfast buffet as much as some others. It is adequate (particularly on your first morning before you have oriented yourself), but the variety is limited and missing a few breakfast buffet staples (like fruit!)

“Worked for us.”

Dorsett Olympic Hotel

My girlfriend and I stayed here 4 nights. Although the rooms are small, like almost all in HK, they are well equipped and above all very clean. It takes about two minutes to walk via Olympic station, which is easy to get to from the airport via a change at Tsing Yi. Although it takes 10 minutes to walk to Nathan Road, we enjoyed the fact we were away from the craziness. Breakfast was a buffet affair mixing Cantonese and Western. A vending machine in the lobby was handy (takes octopus card too) as it is loads cheaper than the minibar!

Overall good value for money, nice staff, clean, and from where we were on the 17th floor, facing Olympian City 2, a decent view, especially at night.

Two small negatives. we booked a double online and got a twin. The room didn't lend itself to pushing beds together so we left it, couldn't be bothered to move room, and when we checked out tax was added over the price advertised, but it was still cheap. (500HKD per night B&B) Will stay there again for sure.

“Its Decent”

Dorsett Olympic Hotel

3 of 5 stars
San Diego, California
Dec 18, 2007

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got to this hotel. I had heard it was very small and also it was new. Other than that I didn't know what I would find.

I would say I was pleased overall. The hotel is new, so it is relatively modern looking on the inside so that is a plus.

There are however a few negative points. First, it is about a half mile walk to any subway station. This makes is a little tough if you have any older travelers with you. Next it seems that the air only blows cold air, this makes the room a little uncomfortable when it is actually cold outside and you want some heat. Last, it seems sometimes the front desk was a little grouchy and my questions were bothering them. This includes such questions as when the shuttle leaves in the morning...etc...

Other than that it was a decent place to stay. Its on the Kowloon side so keep that in mind as well. In my opinion if I did all over, I would spend a little more to get a better hotel in a nicer location. However, despite the few shortcomings, I don't regret the decision, but there are things I would keep in mind before I suggested this place to someone.
