Stayed at the Royal Plaza Hotel from March 29th-April 6th. Overall experiece very positive.
The Location...
Centrally located in Mongkok, some might not find it as convenient as TST location but since the attached KCR (railway line) has merged with MTR (subway system) recently, it makes connections to the MTR mainlines quite easy. Street market is only two blocks away and if you don't like to use the Mongkok East (old KCR station) you may elect to walk to the Mongkok MTR station by way of pedestrian bridge (apprix. 7 mins of walking). The attached shopping mall offers a great range of restaurants, food outlets and shops.
If you are taking the Airport Express train from the airport, get off at the Kowloon station and take the free Airport Express shuttle bus no. K6. It takes you right to the front door of the hotel.
The Buiding...
Hotel was built in the '90s so some minor wear is starting to show. The interior is full of marble fixtures that makes it look more than a 3-star hotel. There is an outdoor swimming pool and water temperature is kept constantly at 28C.
Amenities...
There is a health club/spa, swimming pool and business centre. Executive floor is located on the 18th floor. I have never tried the Chinese Restaurant there but if you take advantage of the long-stay package (available for 1 week and 2 weeks), you 'll get 15-20 % discount on hotel restaurants. A free shuttle service to Tsim Sha Tsui is also available though I have not taken advantage of this service.
The Room...
I travelled with two other people and we opted for the family room which has 1 queen size bed (not the King size as mentioned on the hotel website) and a twin bed. Linens were crisp and furniture well maintained for the age of the hotel. They have upgraded all TVs to LCDs TVs. The room is quite big by HK standards (unlike what you'll get in TST). I do find the beds quite comfortable. Bathroom toiletries, note pads, pens etc were replaced daily.
The only thing that I find unacceptable was the condition of the bathroom. There were stains, mildew in several places and management needs to keep a closer eye on the condition of the aging bathrooms.
Overall...
It was a very pleasant stay at the Royal Plaza. Staff was consistently courteous and the hotel rates were good for the location and size of the rooms. I do find the services on par with many more expensive hotels around HK. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone who 'd like to stay in a less touristy (but more authentic) area in the city.
