I stayed at the Wharney between Feb 14-19 2008. At first i was a little unsure, because of some of the negative reviews i'd read on this site. When i got there i was greeted by very friendly staff, and the check-in process was quick and simple.
The room was a good size. the double bed was a little firm, but wasn't a problem, i had no problems sleeping. i can't beileve people who complain about the beds being too hard - they must be serial whingers! there was also no weird smells in the room, or stains on the carpet, as per previous reviews.
There is a small bar fridge and the usual mini-bar stuff. but i would not recommend any of the stuff on offer. just go across the road to the 7-11 and buy whatever u need for much cheaper.
The bathroom facilities were good.
My room was located on the 11th floor, which is a non-smoking floor.
The location of the hotel itself is perfect. Only a couple minutes walk to the MTR (underground, and the best way to travel), and about a 10-15 minute walk to the city centre (Central).
When i was there, i NEVER had to take a cab anywhere. the hotel is located in Wan Chai.
There are no problems from the red-light district scene. People will ask you to go into their bar, but all you have to do is politely decline. They will not hassle or harass you. I am a single guy, so i got asked quite a bit, but had no problems at all. It is a very safe place, so you don't need to worry.
i had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, and it was buffet-style. Very good quality in my opinion, and it cost HKD$100. If you want more breakfast options, there is a 24hr place called the Flying Pan, about 30 seconds walk from the hotel - they do pancakes, omelettes, and things like that - also very good.
I will definitely stay at the Wharney again and I hope this review will be of use to you.
