“Nice Hotel, Terrific Location”

Excelsior Hong Kong

5 of 5 stars

Nice hotel. Terrific location. Very good and friendly service. While it is true the hotel décor is a bit tired, and it is not a fancy hotel, it is well-kept and clean and seemingly well-run. By the way, we don’t agree with most of the criticisms in prior reviews, except for the small/old tv's.

Comfortable beds, nice shower, good air conditioning. The size of our deluxe harbor view room was fine (and larger than many European hotels) and a very nice view. The bathroom and tub/shower were on the smaller side but not tiny.

Service at the desk, front door, restaurant (floor 1, breakfast) and lobby area was very good. The concierge desk was helpful and good, and always had multiple people working. Our longest wait for concierge assistance was a minute or so.

Taxicabs were always available, and the wait, if any, was never longer than a couple of minutes. The hotel is located across a main and busy street from the bay and Noon Day Gun, a minute or so walk from Victoria Park, and near the entrance to the tunnel to Kowloon (thus relatively easy for cabs to and from the airport and Kowloon).

The restaurant/buffet on floor 1 is nice. The breakfast buffet is terrific and large, with views of the bay. it was about U.S. $25, including the 10% service charge, . The coffee/muffin/fruit café by the elevators is handy. Starbucks is steps away out the side door, on the ground floor of the adjacent World Trade Center. Dickens pub, downstairs, is nice.

The hotel is adjacent to a bustling and bright (and large) shopping and restaurant area. This busy area is steps away out the side door and towards the back of the hotel. The World Trade Center is next to the hotel and literally steps away. The World Trade Center has floors of nice shops and good restaurants. We ate at good Vietnamese (Rice Paper about floor 4) and Korean BBQ (maybe floor 12) restaurants.

The MTR/Causeway Bay is a few minutes away, on Hennessy near the Sojo department store. Times Square, the very nice multi-story shopping mall, is a 5-10 minute walk away. It has very good restaurants in the top floors.

We purchased inexpensive cell phones (368HK) and local SIM cards at one of the many telephone stores on Yee Wo street (a couple blocks from the hotel). Very handy for keeping in touch with our group and friends. Useable on other foreign trips, with the purchase of a local SIM card.

We were in Hong Kong for a week for the rugby 7’s. We would stay at this hotel again, primarily because of the location and friendly and good service. Our two prior stays were at the more expensive Shangri-La (which is a great hotel, but in our view, not as good of a location). If you want a fancy hotel, don't stay here. If you want a good hotel with a terrrific location, consider this one.

“good location but looking tired”

Excelsior Hong Kong

Apr 9, 2008

We stayed at this hotel for three nights in February on a trip to Asia. It has a very convenient location in Causeway Bay close to the MTR station, which means all the main sights in Hong Kong are easily accessible and there a plenty of good shopping on the doorstep. It also means you can link in pretty easily to the airport train at central station. In addition if you buy a three day octopus card, you can get the free airport train hotel transfer bus from outside of the hotel to central station and then get on the train. This is very useful and makes life easy. The service was, on the whole, excellent in the hotel and breakfast is one of the best experiences I have had in a hotel, with food cooked and juices made live for you. The bar on the top of the hotel (talk of the town) is very nice and good to relax in the evenings looking over to Kowloon. The downside is that the hotel rooms are looking a bit tired, with carpets wearing thin and the bathrooms smell a bit. We booked a non-smoking double room with harbour view but were told on arrival that they only had non smoking twin rooms overlooking the harbour but if we wanted a double we could have a smoking double or a non-smoking double without harbour view. This was disappointing and we had to settle for a twin non smoking room overlooking the harbour. In addition, we requested a change of room as the bathroom smelt in our room but all they could do was fumigate the room which helped, but not much. If I were going back to Hong Kong I would probably look to stay elsewhere as ,for the money ,I would expect the rooms to be a little more modern and fresh which is a shame as the service provided by the hotel and its location are real plus points.

“Excellent Base to Explore Hong Kong”

Excelsior Hong Kong

We stayed one night at the Excelsior prior to boarding a ship for a Far East cruise. Check in was quick and efficient. The lobby area isn't that big but all you need.

The room wasn't that big but perfectly adequate for one night. Good comfortable bed and nice bathroom.

We had breakfast served in the room. The Japanese breakfast was lovely as was the traditional one.

The hotel is well situated to explore Hong Kong and we would recommend it.

“Probaly the best value in Hong Kong”

Excelsior Hong Kong

I have found my new Home when on business trips in Asia.
The Excelsior in Causeway bay is Rock solid, it has a great location, friendly staff, & fantastic Breakfast buffet & Dickens Sports Bar is probably the best hotel Bar I have ever been in ! The rooms are clean & well appointed & most of all the beds, pillows are super comfortable. You can just walk right in to the shopping buzz of causeway bay on the Island.

“Overall - very good in Hong Kong”

Excelsior Hong Kong

We booked this hotel for a 4 night stay while returning to the UK from Oz, we had also stayed in Singapore on the way over so were really looking forward to the hotel and Hong Kong.

Upon arriving we upgraded to the executive floor but were a little surprised at the size of the room! Although comfortable and very clean it was very small - but the service and exec lounge access made up for this. The best things we found about the hotel were the level of service, range of restaurants, the quality of the room service (food great!!!) and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

Although we are fairly well travelled we still found Hong Kong a very unusual place to stay. Be prepared for the smog/pollution, grumpy but cheap taxi drivers and the anti-climax when you reach some of the tourist attractions.

Best thing about HK is definately the shopping - visit all the malls and markets to experience the full effect.
