“Fine for what it is”

Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong

May 2, 2008

Even if you didn't know that this hotel is attached to a massive conference centre, you can somehow sense it as you walk through the door. The whole place has the no-nonsense/no-frills atmosphere of a place occupied almost exclusively by foreign businesspeople, who arrive late and leave early, staying for one night only. The rooms are perfectly clean and adequate, but completely non-descript and rather dated (and a little tired in the case of mine, whose cupboards and bathroom sink were scuffed and chipped in places). Everything is designed with just enough space for its intended purpose, and not an inch more. The morning breakfast experience is as close as I ever hope to come to being in a factory production line.

In terms of location, the hotel is very well situated. Being just outside Central, it benefits from cheaper rooms than its peers, whilst still being within walking distance (or a very short cab ride) from the business district. Going in the other direction, it is also only minutes from Happy Valley Racecourse (which is an absolute must if you're in town on Wednesday night). Plus, of course, it is on the waterfront, with incredible views across to Kowloon. The only downside to its positioning is that the next door convention centre was undergoing huge, all-night building works while I was there, resulting in a crashing of cranes and lorries that kept me awake until 3am.

Overall, I'd say that it's a good place to lay your head in Hong Kong, if that's all you need it for. However, I'd recommend that vacationers and honeymooners find somewhere a bit more characterful for their stay.

“Hong Kong Harbour View”

Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong

Overall good stay for 19 days. The hotel location is very convenient to the convention center and the Wan Chai MTR station. The view of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline is fabulous. The staff were very cordial and prompt. The service level at the hotel was always good to exceptional. The daily breakfast buffet is wonderful.

I did have a few small piques with the hotel. For a long stay with 2 people the closet space is inadequate, we ended up using the desks drawers for storage of clothes and other effects. We asked the hotel to clear our minbar fridge so we could use it for our own supplies. Unfortunately the fridge was so shallow, it was almost pointless. I wish we had asked them to remove the fridge entirely to use for storage of clothes and other things. With the exception of our space challenges everything about our experience at the Renaissance Harbour View was very good.

I can't speak to the value end of our booking since it was a business trip (with a couple of personal days) and all the arrangements and payments were not handled by us.

Would I recommend staying here if you are in Hong Kong?
Yes

“Highly Recommended”

Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong

My partner and I stayed here for four nights in March before moving on to Australia. We had checked out the hotel website but were still totally unprepared for the amazing harbour view which met us when we entered our room!

The room was spacious and immaculately clean. The staff were unbelievably helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble. We ate at the outdoor BBQ and the Dynasty restaurant. The food was tasty and also in our opinion very good value.

The hotel is ideally located for the MTR and star ferry. I would recommend an evening trip on the star ferry for the laser show and also, dinner at Nobu (in the Intercontinental on Kowloon) for a real treat!

Overall, the Renaissance Harbour View was clean, comfortable, good value and the staff are the most helpful I have ever had the pleasure to come across!

“Excellent Hotel”

Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong

I visited Hong Kong in March 2008 and my wife and I stayed at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel. I booked the hotel for three nights via the internet (www.asiarooms.com) and paid £110 per night inclusive of breakfast. We arrived at Hong Kong Airport around 6.30am and after taking the fast train into Hong Kong Central station and transferring to the free hotel shuttle, we arrived at the hotel around 9.30am. In other hotels I have visited, should you arrive as early as this you would be told to return at about 1pm. Not so the case with this hotel, as I was informed that our room was not ready but if I returned in about one hour’s time then one would be made ready for us. We duly returned at the suggested time and the pass cards were handed to us for room 1804. The room overlooked the garden as the harbour view rooms are more expensive and I can't see the point of paying for a view when you only look out of the window a few times during your stay!

The hotel is ideally located on Hong Kong Island and is only a short walking distant from the Wanchai Star Ferry Terminal. It is only a relatively short distance from the Wanchai MTR station that will allow the traveller to take advantage of the excellent rail links and low-cost travel around Hong Kong.

I have stayed at this hotel three times now and would most certainly recommend it to any first-time traveller to Hong Kong, I would also recommend it to any traveller returning to Hong Kong who has been disappointed with their accommodation on previous visits.

I can not praise the hotel personnel highly enough as they are always friendly, professional and courteous in all their actions.

The hotel rooms are well appointed and the breakfast is a joy to feast on as there is a wide variety to cater for Europeans and Asians. I never took advantage of the swimming pool and health club that is shared with the Grand Hyatt, however, I did walk around all the facilities with my wife and everything looked in pristine condition.

I hope I have another opportunity to visit Hong Kong and the Renaissance Harbour View will by first choice of hotel even though there have been many more first-class hotels constructed there since my previous visit in 2005.

“Renaissance luxury in Hong Kong? No such luck!”

Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong

This hotel's claim to provide 5-star service is completely ill-founded in our experience. The rooms require urgent renovation - here are a few good reasons:
1. The old -fashioned bulky TV set block the mirror - a ridiculous arrangement
2. The lighting system is awful: the central control switches on all the light at the slightest provocation, even when you try to change the air conditioning setting in the middle of the night. it is also impossible to switch the light in the corridor separately from room lights. To add insult to injury, the reading lights are spot lights in the ceiling, so one person has no chance of sleeping whilst the other is reading. On top of all that, there are no power sockets next to the bed, and no standard lamps. We had to borrow a lamp and an extension lead and plug it in at the opposite wall, creating a trip hazard. The hotel staff were unapologetic about this.
3. There was no tray for the kettle, no cups (just mugs) and no wine glasses. All that had to be requested.
4. There is only one armchair (the other is a desk chair) and no coffee table.
5. The colour scheme is dominated by dark greys - in combination with bad lighting makes the place feel gloomy.
6. The pillows smelt funny and had to be changed.
7. Linen was not changed daily, and room make up was idiosyncratic: one day they forgot to add tea, the other the bed turn down in the evening.
8 The bathroom is small, dark and inconvenient, and the toilet bowl uses a rather disgusting flushing system with a "delay and display" action.
9. Singing in the bar is painful to the ear (out of tune), but reverberates around the lobby, because the bar is "open plan" - so there is no escape. (The best option is to pop to Grand Hyatt across the 11-th floor swimming pool, where singing at the Champagna Bar is exquisite!)

The HKCEC nearby is in the process of building an extension. Funnily enough, that does not create the principal disruption - it is the rest of the arrangements in the hotel that are woefully inadequate. Oh, and internet in rooms is wired by default, and cost HK$830 (over GBP60) for 10 days (14 days, in fact - but that was the only option).
