“Excellent for the business traveler to Hong Kong”

JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong

I have recently stayed in three of five Marriott properties in Hong Kong. The JW Marriott at Pacific Place, Admiralty district, is by far the most elegant. It is correspondingly expensive. It is best suited for the well-heeled buiness traveler, and its proximity to many of the financial service and banking institutions in Hong Kong make it ideal for this type of customer.

Staff are extraordinarily attentive, and a wide variety of top-notch cuisine is available in eight on-site restaurants. I suggest the Fish Bar for a casual, open-air dining experience near the pool, and check out the seafood buffet at lunch in the Cafe. The adjacent Pacific Place shopping center also has many nice dining and drinking options in addition to its luxury-brand shops.

Lovely Hong Kong Park is a five-minute walk, and the Admiralty MTR station at Pacific Place gives you easy access to most of the rest of the city.

The one downside I would point out is noise. The massive lobby is spacious, airy, and has magnificent viewing day or night, but it is open to several floors, including Q88 wine bar, the Lounge, and the Cafe. Thus, it is usually very noisy in these places. You'll have to go elsewhere for a quiet discussion or intimate meal. Also, as is almost universal in Hong Kong, construction of new apartments and another hotel are going on adjacent to the JW, and during the day, some associated noise is audible in the guest rooms.

“A little disappointing for the price”

JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong

3 of 5 stars
California
Jun 10, 2008

An upper floor had been requested, but the desk clerk said it would be too noisy due to “renovation”, so we were assigned to a mid-level room. The “renovation” noise did start first thing in the morning and was heard in the room. Street noise reached the room. Pool noise was also easily heard in the room, even early morning and late evening. The door to the room seemed to be a sound amplification device rather than sound deadening, as all hallway conversation was easily heard, word for word. Having requested a quiet location, we were given a room between two families with children who perhaps were playing midnight soccer outside our door and needed to be heard at the other end of the playing field.

Upon arrival, a pot of tea and a fruit plate consisting of 2 apples, 2 oranges, and 1 banana were brought to the room. Considering it was about 10:30 p.m., it would have been nice if the tea had been an herbal type tea (no caffeine) such as hibiscus, mint or whatever.

The room was a small pentagon shaped room. The size was adequate for one person, a bit crowded for two. The view was of other buildings, the pretty hillside and the pool. The room was clean, but dated and in need of renovation to be a first class hotel. The TV was an ancient tube TV that maybe could be used to heat the room in the winter. There was no DVD/CD player. The rotary temperature control was difficult to read and not precise. Motorized drape and lighting controls were at bedside.

The bed was hard, even though some type of pad had been put on it. The linens, duvet and pillows were nice. The mini-bar refrigerator did not work – everything in it was warm – but they replaced it at our request. However, they put the warm beverages back in and it was a day before there was anything cool to drink.

There was complimentary coffee, tea and bottled water in the room. I didn’t try the coffee, but the tea was low quality. The evening turndown left an Andes mint.

The bathroom was very compact, but nice and equipped with everything necessary. There were separate tub and shower. There was a “volume” knob which didn’t work – probably was to pipe in the house music. The bathroom was equipped with a magnifying mirror, weighing scale, bathrobes, slippers, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower gel, bar soap, bath salts, mouthwash, sewing kit, nail file, cotton balls, etc. The hair dryer was decrepit – only 2 settings, very hot slow, and very hot fast – no cool settings, etc.

No writing stationery was provided. A few small envelopes (maybe 3”x5”) and 2 postcards were provided – one of a goldfish bowl, one of the hotel view from the pool. An umbrella was provided.

The hotel location is nice – connected to the Pacific Place Mall, the subway, and near the very pleasant Hong Kong Park.

“Great service - would return”

JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong

I stayed here on business and was really just co-locating with my colleagues rather than making a conscious choice of hotel but I have to say that the level of service here is top notch.

I was in an executive rooms on floor 35, and I would say that the room size was a bit small for this class of Hotel. There was some construction work going on while I was there but it only really became noticeable at the weekend and I was heading out anyway.

The room was equipped with a service bell, which summons a room attendant - one of the most obliging chaps I have met.

Free WiFi is available in the public areas (and just about in the room that I had, though obviously not intended).

What really struck me was the attentiveness of the staff, they really seem to take a pride in serving their customers. The concierge staff are especially helpful and organised a tour for me at a reasonable price.

The location is good if you are working in the Central district. The hotel has direct access to the shopping mall in Pacific place which also houses a station for the mass transit system.

I feel that they charge a fairly full rate, (even corporate rates) but all things considered I would say that it represents value. I think they are concerned that guests enjoy their stay - different from so many other hotels who say this and then fail miserably to follow through.

“Perfect Fit For Me”

JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong

May 29, 2008

This was my first visit to Hong Kong and the hotel experience was better than could be hoped for.
We were met at the HK airport by the hotel's representative (optional service). He assisted with the luggage and took us to the car which was a luxury vehicle with a professional driver. They both spoke English (as do many locals in HK). We had a pleasant trip to the hotel, approximately forty minutes. We had a welcome telephone call during the trip (from the hotel) asking if everything was ok and if we needed anything special at the hotel. Upon arrival we were met at the door by a host who took us immediately to our room which was a junior suite (we are Marriott rewards members which may determine the special attention). As others have noted, the rooms are "corner designed" and ours had a narrow view of the harbor. The sitting room and the bedroom were both well appointed and attractive. Yes, the bedroom was small as compared to US hotels but i thought that it was more than adequate. The bathroom was excellent with separate tub and shower. Everyone at this hotel greeted you and was pleasant. The service was excellent (i like to compare hotels against the Ritz Carlton level of service and this one was just as good)! Restaurant choices were excellent (as we had been travelling in China for a month it was welcome to be able to order American style food). Room service was excellent with timely delivery and no surprises. When i ordered they even asked about condiments and extras that i might want. Security was very good on the property. We had access to the concierge level which i highly recommend. Food and drink service is as good as it gets and the concierege is very proficient. The location on HK island is good in that everything is close either by walking, taxi or the subway. We tried the subway upon the recommendation of staff and it was very clean, efficient and time saving (car traffic can be slow). Another positive about this property is that is sits above an expansive, primarily upscale mall which also has many restaurants and even a movie theater. I have stayed at many hotels within the US and abroad and i would strongly recommend this property for business or vacation travel.

“Could have been better but not too bad overall”

JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong

Location is the major plus point for this hotel. This would have been my second time staying at the marriot. The bed was plush and comfy, no complains there.

However, the turn down service only rang the doorbell at 10 plus pm and did such a sloppy job in turning down the bed. This was the norm for the 4 nights that I was there.

Other than finding the room a tad bit dim, love the fact that the curtains can be drawn via a button on the bed panel. No other major complains
