Having visited both entrances accessible to the Great Wall from Beijing, Mutianyu is the only way to go! The nice touristy entrance (whose name I can't remember) was just that, nice, but several hundred steps (of varying depths) before you get onto the wall is not my idea of a pleasant experience. Mutianyu on the other hand has a chair lift to take you close to the wall, then about 6 steps and you are actually on the wall. We were fortunate enough to ride up in the cable car in which Bill Clinton rode when he visited China as President. There is plenty of wall upon which to walk, plenty of stairs if that's what you want to experience and certainly plenty of "goodies" to buy on "ground level". I would highly recommend a trip to Mutianyu and you could also visit the Ming Tombs which are in that general area.
