“Best location in Luxor”

Iberotel Luxor

Jan 17, 2008

I stayed at the Iberotel Luxor for 2 nights in January 2008.

The best thing about this hotel is its location - it is right at the end of the main street that runs along the river, and is right on the Nile with no roads in between it and the river. The pool is actually a floating pontoon overhanging the Nile, and is a very pleasant place to spend the afternoon and watch the sunset.

The rooms were large and comfortable and, if you get one overlooking the Nile or the internal atrium, very quiet.

The breakfast was a buffet and had a decent choice of hot and cold foods, meats, cereals and fruits, and an omelet chef.

The hotel is clearly aimed at tour groups, so the staff were friendly but not especially helpful in arranging local tours.

There are 4 restaurants on the property - the main restaurant, and then separate Chinese and pizza restaurants down on the river. There is also a cafe. We only tried the chinese restaurant and found it average.

I'd stay here again for the unbeatable location and the pool view. The hotel used to be the Novotel so that indicates the standard to be expected, and for the price I think it is exceptional value.

“Pleasant stay”

Iberotel Luxor

The Iberotel is on the main drag in Luxor and unlike some of the other hotels it is located right on the banks of the Nile. We got a room that had a Nile view and in my opinion is worth the extra money - for one thing it's very quiet because on all the other sides of the hotel you will be facing a street. As to the lobby view rooms, it is exactly just that - your balcony looks into the lobby so I'm sure it'll be quiet but I don't know how often you'll be using your balcony. Our room was a comfortable size and overall clean. The carpet was a bit ratty and they didn't seem to be that attentive to vacuuming.

Breakfast was amazing! Many choices (tonnes of pastries, yogurt) and an egg/omelet station where they make your eggs to order. The breakfast room staff is friendly with efficient service. Breakfast was served fairly early 5:30 am or something, but if you are checking out earlier than that they provide "breakfast boxes" for you to pick up as you're leaving as long as you notify them ahead of time.

As to the hotels other amenities, we tried out the "cake + tea" (15 le) evening deal on the veranda and the chocolate mousse turned out to be pretty rubbery and tasting like chalk. We read rave reviews about Le Mandarin and decided to try it out (though our prior Chinese food dining experiences in Egypt were disappointing). The food turned out to be pretty underwhelming, actually it was terrible - honestly can't understand how it got such glowing reviews - all our dishes tasted bland and had the exact same repertoire of vegetables (give or take a few). Some of the food arrived at our table sort of luke warm. The hotel had internet service but it was a total rip off - something like 50 le for half an hour compared to the internet cafe/bookshop a quick walk away only cost 10 le for a full hour.

I think my one complaint about the hotel was the front desk - deplorable service - the staff didn't seem too keen on helping us with our questions regarding where to eat, stuff to do etc. And when they did decide to give us the light of day it was a hasty conversation before they either turned away or went back to answering the phone.

And a general caution for non-smokers: people smoked everywhere in the hotel (and Egypt for that matter). Kind of ruined my experience of sitting on my balcony because the chick next door is smoking like a chimney or inhaling cigarette smoke while eating dessert. Actually I smelled the towels once and they distinctly smelled like the cigarette smoke. A big nuisance but hey figured I could survive once I returned home (where smoking is banned everywhere except the sanctity of your place of abode).

Overall it was a nice place to come back to each night after a day of sight seeing - at least it was clean and the rooms were quiet.

“Two years is a long time !”

Iberotel Luxor

Just back from a week in Lurox and re booked the Iberotel as we had stayed there two years ago.

New Name, new managment and new levels of service, and sorry to say that the service and overall up keep of the hotel has gone down hill in a big way.

Front office staff are very rude and dont want to even talk to you let alone help in anyway.

Breakfast is very poor and once again no service, lucky if you get one cup of coffee with no chance of a top up, food is below average so only had breakfast on the first two days.

Overall this is a 2 star hotel at best and we would not go back

Stay away and save your money

“Great View”

Stayed at this hotel for six nights in December 2007. It has a wonderful position on the banks of the Nile, with a lovely view. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a stopover for group tours and the dining room can get a little crowded, the food is ok, but not great . Breakfast is the best meal. If you want to pay extra and have better quality they have 2 other resturants in the grounds.
My only complaint was they had turned the air-conditioning off for the winter. My room was an internal one with a small balcony facing the internal reception area. The room was very hot and stuffy even with the balcony door open. Sleeping was very comfortable and unpleasant. I requested a fan, but they didnt have any. If you can afford it, spend the extra and get an extrenal room preferably facing the river - it will be well worth it.
Having said that, I would stay there again, if I had the right room.

“Great hotel for independent travelers”

Iberotel Luxor

Dec 10, 2007

The Iberotel Luxor is an ideal place for independent travelers. Room quality and size are similar to a Holiday Inn class hotel. Rooms are clean, and relatively quite. Climate controls were acceptable. TV was small, with about two channels each for English, Russian, Italian, German, and French language. The pool is in an unbeatable location, but was very cold in late November. We made minimal demands for service, but what little interaction we had with the staff was first rate.

The complimentary breakfast is first rate. Great baked goods, an egg station, sausage, etc. Some very nice local foods as well- try the Egyptian broad beans! Breakfast can be taken in a dinning room or on a patio overlooking the Nile.

The hotel is very conveniently located, being a short walk south of Luxor Temple on the river side. We rarely used a taxi or carriage, except on the west bank. There are a number of good and inexpensive local restaurants along the riverside a short walk away, so we did not eat at the hotel except for breakfast.

We paid extra for a Nile side balcony room, which I would highly recommend. There is really something special about resting on the balcony, watching the sun set over sailboats on the river.

So- although this hotel can not truly be considered a luxury hotel, it should meet the needs of most travelers. If I had paid their rates for this hotel in America, I would still have considered it a good value.
