“Not A Bad Choice Overall”

Hotel Capital

I had read other reviews about Capital Hotel but decided to stay there anyway due to location (near but not in the Itaewon area, near the US Army Base at Yongsan). I got a rate of US$140 per night, including all taxes and service charges. On that basis, I think the Capital Hotel was a very good deal for this location.

As noted, the furniture in the hotel rooms is a weird pseudo French provincial design which I believe most will find downright ugly. The mattress on the bed was very hard and the furniture, carpets and wall paper were all worn and need replacement. On the positive side, the room was clean and well heated (window did open and used to modify room temperature). The shower had the best water pressure I have ever had in any hotel (on the 16th floor!) and no problem with hot water. The room had a mini-refrigerator, lots of extra blankets and pillows, a hair dryer, and cable TV with two English channels (CNN and the US Armed Forces network that runs TV and sports programming from the US). I never had a problem with noise, so, overall, I found the room to be satisfactory.

Breakfast in hotel is expensive and not very good. Recommend eat on the Army Base if have access or in Itaewon or elsewhere. Two convenience stores right outside Capital have snacks and similar and are open 24 hours a day. Pastries at hotel look very nice but I did not try.

Buy telephone cards from one of convenience stores. Get local phone card for local calls (can use on pay phones only) and international card for calls out of Korea. Rates very cost effective - pennies per minute.

I found staff at the Capital Hotel to be friendly and helpful. Do NOT exchange money at hotel - rates are terrible. Do in Itaewon or on the Army Base.

Very nice, large, and impressive lobby but too bad no place to sit, except a couple of couches jus across from the check in counter.

Lot of weddings and tour groups from China and Japan. Be aware that with only two elevators, they elevators can be a long, crowded wait during their check ins.

Hotel has a reasonably well equipped business center with two computers and printers. Charge is about $5 for 30 minutes but most time, did not charge me. Bellman has keys for access.

Two subway stops about 1/4 mile distant from hotel, one at top of hill - main road from hotel, and other in Itaewon outside the Hamilton Hotel . Subway will take you about anywhere you want to go and is definitely the way to get around Seoul and out to nearby cities. All stations numbered and routes easy to follow; all signs in English and Korean. There is a tourist office in the subway station at the Itaewon stop - lot of info

Get a T-money card to ease use and save money. Can buy at 7-11. Exit hotel, turn right, and from main road go up side street to right (at v). 7-11 behind Crown Hotel on side street. Subway is 800 won per trip with T-money; 900 won otherwise.

Overall, for $140 per night, if looking for location near Itaewon and Army Base but a bit quieter, I think Capital Hotel is a very good choice. Yes, weird furniture in room, but rest not bad.

“Covers the basics but not impressed”

Customer made the booking/suggestion and I agreed but I was hesitant as this hotel did not have good reviews and again, they were right. As I had not been here for 12 yrs I went with the customer booking (my problem).
So the furniture was a very strange, ornate, 70's type of Koreanness; almond bath counter and just dated. NO air con as it is fall so they turn it off, but not a huge issue for me. Bed was very hard as I believe most Korean/Japanese hotels. This place was geared for locals or Asians I would say as I saw hardly any westerners.
the lobby was large, with the cafe to one side that serves as a deli/bakery. Bfast was good, not great, but it was serving the same food exactly everyday.
The best thing was that I could walk to Itaewon shop/ eat area within 10 mins, or eat on the side street across the street. A nice little Vietnamese place there.
The only good thing was that the published rate was discounted heavily after my customer pushed a bit, as I did not want to pay est. $250 ? so it came down to about $170.
Itaewon shopping is not worth much regards price but lots of good restaurants.

My Final answer: I will look for another in the south area next time; this was convenient for my work needs but it is not worth staying again if it can be avoided. Itaewon was fun due to weekend street bands/festival and all the pubs and restaurants.

“WORST HOTEL IN SEOUL!”

The staff in this hotel is incredibly rude. This hotel is not worth your money. This hotel is will charge 5 bucks for water and 20 bucks to use their shampoo. When I checked out of the hotel, it was raining very hard...they wouldn't even give me an umbrella without a fuss! The rooms remind me of a 1960s love hotel. I have stayed in many hotels in Seoul and I simply do not recommend this one.

“Hotel in dire need of a remodel”

Hotel Capital

The furniture looks too antique. It's okay if you're a collector of dollhouse furniture. They need to remodel the entire hotel and maybe spray for bugs too, I had to squash a Centipede I found in my room! I should have taken it to the front desk and demanded a refund. This hotel is just not worth the price it charges.

“Some good service, with a few quirks...”

Hotel Capital

11/11 found this review helpful

I stayed at this hotel with a group of teenagers. The management said they had never had a group and did not really want to accommodate us. But they did and were very nice. It is not within close walking distance of affordable meals. There was a quirk with the keys (which you had to have in order to have power in the rooms, or lights. So if the person staying in your room was gone with the key you had no power.... Also for a four star hotel I expected more English to be spoken. Very little from the staff. But on the whole it was a workable stay.
