Phnom Penh is certainly a rough and poor place -- and in the midst of it is Raffles. Behind its walls one could believe one was in a tropical island resort. The room was spacious and luxurious -- except for the cryogenic level of the air conditioning (which we couldn't regulate). The water was (supposedly) filtered and safe to drink. (We had no problems; so I guess it was.) The [wide] halls had teak floors -- which unfortunately caused some rather suspicious female screaming and squealing noises to reverberate in the night. Who knows? Breakfast was superb -- as was the tropical setting for it. The bakery/bookshop sold wonderful cookies and pastries -- and a first-rate selection of books -- including some of an academic nature about Cambodia's sad history. And outside the walls was a collection of tuk-tuk drivers who were -- surprisingly enough! -- polite. (We used them for four days straight, and were treated very well.)
