Stayed here for 4 nights and overall, I’d say we were very happy with what we got for what we paid. I hadn’t realised just how cheap everything is in Vietnam and when we were booking a hotel, we were quoted $36 a night per room which is peanuts! Admittedly, the location wasn’t exactly the most posh location you could get in in HCM City as it was in the backpackers district.
The hotel lobby was a bit grubby but if you look past this, the actual bedrooms were quite nice – good size, air conditioning, mini bar, flat screen telly (with about 40 channels!), free cable internet and nice bathroom. Must say, the bed was very firm so my back was aching at the end of the 4 days – might just be me though!
One thing you must be aware of is that on the booking form, the hotel asks for your estimated arrival time. Put in a couple of hours buffer, as if you don’t turn up at the specified time, your room is sold to someone else! We made the mistake of putting down our flight arrival, but that was 1.5 hour late, then it was 1 hour later by the time we arrived at the hotel, only to be told that our room wasn’t available. This was after a long (delayed) flight from London to Bangkok then to HCM City – not really what you want to hear!
However, we were told that we would be put up in room in another hotel just round the corner (Lien Ha Hotel), then the following day, we could come back to this hotel. I wonder if it was because we had booked to stay there for 5 nights and therefore they were bending backwards to accommodate us. In fact, we returned there the next day, the same lady who was on the night shift, greeted us, and gave us our keys to an upgraded room (deluxe $45/night) which was on the 10th floor and it was definitely a 3* plus hotel room, possible edging towards a 4* hotel room.
All staff speak English and are friendly. Location is really good, but one thing to note is HCM City doesn’t seem to sleep and it’s noisy 24/7 so ear plugs are a good idea. It was in the backpackers district so really close to tons of places to eat, buy souvenirs and to have a cold beer in the sweltering heat. Two little places we ate at were Bi Saigon and La Table De Saigon which we think are sister restaurants, and are excellent value for money.
