Unlike other restored hotels in Vietnam the Caravelle has absolutely no historical atmosphere, its lobby and rooms are of the typical anonymous big city hotel variety. However it is a great place to stay in terms of location, and you can see all the historic buildings out the window!!
We had interconnecting rooms on the 18th floor facing the city and the view was great - the Municipal Theatre, Rex Hotel, Continental Hotel, Hotel de Ville, all buildings I had been reading about in terms of Saigon's 20th century history. The rooms were good sized and well appointed but nothing remarkable. I wanted different pillows and housekeeping were happy to oblige.
The gym is well equipped and the outdoor pool quite large for a city hotel. We only ate breakfast at the hotel and it was excellent, a truly superb buffet with pastries, dim sum, egg chef, hot english breakfast, cold cuts, etc, etc.
The staff were efficient and obliging and I would definitely chose the Caravelle again as a base for exploring HCMC rather than any of the hotels down by the river. The hotel is on the corner of Dong Khoi, the main shopping street, and is right in the central part of the street. There are a couple of very good restaurants - Lemongrass for Vietnamese and Augustin for french - just around the corner. Neither of these are expensive. The Ben Thanh market is a 10 minute walk away.
We didn't like having to pay for internet access when it is free in so many places in Vietnam but overall a great experience.
