This place is exactly how others have described it. Our train to Chang Mai was 2 hours late, but the owner's son was still there waiting for us when we arrived! Fern Paradise is family run and lives right there so they definitely take care of the place as if it was their own house (because it is!)
The owner is an avid fern lover and we spent over an hour with him as he gave us a personal tour explaining how ferns grow and some of the 260+ species he has growing. He could easily charge admission for this incredible tour, but happily does it for free with the hope that you may consider growing a fern or two when you get home.
You stay in a converted rice barn, on the open lower level they have a living room area set up with a comfortable hammock and your air conditioned bedroom/bathroom is in the barn. The owner is an architect who wanted to preserve traditional thai rice culture and saved these barns from the countryside to relocate to his area with the intent to turn it into a museum. Thankfully he changed his mind and turned it into a hotel instead!
You can take a green car into town by walking up to the road (~15 baht). These are just pickup trucks with covered backs/bench seats, kind of like an open air bus. I recommend just ringing the buzzer at reception and asking them to call a taxi and let them know what time you'd like to leave. A taxi will cost 200 baht ($6 USD) to get to the night bazaar or anywhere in the old city.
They also include breakfast which was absolutely incredible. You have the option of western or thai style and it was an amazing feast. I highly recommend Fern Paradise and would love to go back. It's an incredible value for the price!
