We booked the Davis hotel based on previous reviews on this site and others and I have to admit that I was more than happy. The staff are really lovely. When we arrived at the hotel & were shown to our rooms I discovered that my husband and I had been given two single beds, even though I had specifically requested a room with a king bed. The porter called reception for us to request room change and waited with us discussing all the sites that we could/should do & see which was very helpful. Within 10 minutes the hotel had us in another room with a king bed. We found the breakfast buffet to be just the thing to start our days with.
I don't recommend booking a tour through the tour desk in the lobby though. We arranged a floating market & river Kwai tour as these were the two things that we really wanted to do while in Bangkok. We paid a premium as it was a private tour, just the four of us (two couples) with no other tourists. We were very disappointed as we also visited a salt farm, wood carvers and coconut sugar making which are things that we had no interest in seeing.
Because of these additional stops we were only allowed 30 minutes at the floating markets and 1 hr at the river Kwai to have lunch (which was just horrible) and to walk along the bridge. We did lodge a letter of complaint with the travel company as trip was not what we had paid for. I wouldn't have minded one of these stops only, especially the wood carvers as this was excellent, but the way things were we didn't even have enough time to do any shopping at the markets.
But apart from that we found the location of the hotel pretty good, there is a great little restaurant/bar on a side street opposite the hotel that has fantastic thai food (I loved their green curry) and good range. There is a mini mart also on this street so very convenient. The Emporium shopping complex down the road is also very good, we found some really good bargains there. My husband & I walked down here and did not find the walk too far. Also the station for the sky train is near the Emporium so you can easily hop on that to go to the other parts of Bangkok.
In the mornings if you turn left out of the hotel and walk down the road you will find all the street food stalls, so if you are not happy with the hotels breakfast fare you could always go looking for something else. Also McDonalds if you are inclined.
We will definately stay in this hotel the next time we are in Bangkok.
