“Can't beat the location”

Westin Grande Sukhumvit Hotel

We have just returned from 5 nights at the Westin in an executive club room and these are my thoughts:

Location - can't beat it as the Skytrain is on the doorstep and the MRT underground which takes you directly to the night markets at Lumpini is a short 2 minute stroll away.

Room: Great size for a 5 night stay, very clean of course. Bathroom needs more space to put your toiletries down on as housekeeping discovered when they dropped my toner and it broke but they replaced it immediately with a new one, a note of apology and some flowers. I was most impressed.

Club Lounge: Very Average! Don't bother having breakfast there as it's very low on variety, and not great quality. "Hot" food is barely warm and even at evening drinks and canapes they're quite "stingy" or "tight" when it comes to filling it up when it's finished. Only about 5 spirit types to choose from.

The Med restaurant: Breakfast was great. Dinner we had a la carte from the Thai section and it was ok, we've had better in Thailand. Buffet looked nice though.

Lobby: Honestly who cares what it looks like, it's the entrance to the hotel for goodness sake and same for what the hotel looks like on the outside! Only down side there is that all passage ways to the rooms have no air con so it's really hot when you open your room door.

Day spa: Good prices especially as they had 20% off between 10am-2pm. Had a 90 minute Thai massage and it was great.

Staff: Friendly, some more than others but that's normal anywhere in the world especially in a very corporate type of hotel where most people don't stay long. Altough we were tourists that made it better as there were not as many families with kids staying there and the swimming pool was empty.

“Among the best in Bangkok”

Location: Hotel is well situated in a great area and has an entrance to the sky train literally at its front door. You will be hard pressed to find a better location.

Service: The service is the thing I like best about this hotel. Always friendly and helpful. I can tell you it comes from the General Manager a really frinedly and helpful person himself.

Rooms: The rooms are contemporary and modern. Very comfortable. I think they will need to put some larger LCD type televisions in soon to keep up with the competition but otherwise the rooms are very comfortable and well decorated.

Restaurant: Once of the friendliest restaurants in BKK. The staff is always very helpful, friendly and engaging.

Overall a great hotel.

“Indeed - you can do better than the Westin”

Overall, I was disappointed by the hotel, which does not deserve the high ratings it has received on Tripadvisor. I have stayed at five other first class/luxury hotels in Bangkok, and this was my least favourite.

The hotel is not impressive, but rather ugly from the outside, and it doesn't get better inside. The lobby is small, soulless and lacking the elegance of a Bangkok 5 star hotel. It was cheapened further by a rather downmarket clothing sale that was held in the lobby area during our stay.

The lobby bar and restaurant are very modern, but unappealing. We had afternoon tea - the quality of the sandwiches and pastries was very poor and we sat in an unpleasant aircon draft. We also had dinner at the Med restaurant - the food was average measured against the high Bangkok standards.

The swimming pool is not bad, but not impressive either. The gym is cramped and full of people who are not hotel guests.

The best thing about the hotel was the room, which was quite large and pleasant, with a really comfy bed and good bedlinen.

Staff were consistently friendly and helpful, so no complaints here.

The location is central and convenient next to the Skytrain, but the surrounding Sumkhumvit area isn't that great. We much prefer the Riverside, or Silom Road - it also has the usual marketstalls, bars and massage parlours, but it all seems less tacky and downmarket than Sumkhumvit.

Overall, I would not recommend this hotel as it does not stand out in any area. The public areas are not very nice and the dining options below average, so you don't really have the cossetted comfy feeling of a true 5 star hotel.

Checked in and arrived at the room to find it was not as requested quite specifically when booking. Check-in staff had told the tour Co. guide accompanying us that the room change was going to happen but conversed in Thai and didn't even try to communicate with us. We were moved at our insistence to a proper room (why couldn't they have done this first time?) but when I asked why they hadn't tried to talk to me when I was standing at the check in desk, all I got was a blank smile and no answer. Also, the new plumbing was not right in the new room - you could only change the shower temp by turning it off, fiddling with the control and then turning it on again. Complained to duty manager and got extra fruit...

The hotel is well situated for the Skytrain, a Robinsons dept store, supermarket and a branch of Boots but that is about it. Breakfast was poor: "hot" items under the servery lights were cold - the lights illuminated the food beautifully but failed totally to impart any heat. Tried to use Starwood points to pay for breakfast but this caused utter confusion with everyone telling us different things. I give up. Back to the Four Seasons again - we only tried the Westin for a change: bad mistake! We would not recommend this hotel. Quite shambolic in several respects and unworthy of its claimed star rating.

Yes, a great location, as the reviews said, but that's where it ends. I have been travelling to Thailand for over 18 years and I thoroughly researched this hotel on the web. It is the number one hotel in Bangkok but I have no idea why. The best thing about Thailand and hotels is the service. Here, it was generally cordial, but very cold. The staff said yes yes yes, but took two hours to bring a baby cot to our room. We stayed in the "executive" room and we used the executive breakfast lounge on the top floor. It was quiet alright, but they had about 1/10 of the choice they had on the ground floor. They couldn't explain the difference and didn't understand that we wanted an omlette-- that took about 10 minutes to explain. Needless to say, the next morning we ate in the regular restaurant. I was told that my 2 1/2 year old son didn't have to pay for breakfast, but they tried to charge me on several occasions. When we tried to book a boat tour, the concierge showed us some tour which obviously pays a commission to him (or to the hotel) since it was twice the regular price we normally would pay-- which maybe is to expected in Thailand at most places, but you would hope that the number 1 rated hotel on Trip Advisor would rise above this. The staff always had their hand out for tips.. and again, this is somewhat normal, but it was to an extreme at this hotel. One exception, there is a wonderful Japanese guest relations manager working there, who we knew from the Sofitel on Silom road, which by the way, is LESS EXPENSIVE, and much much better-- including the breakfast and cocktail hour at the executive lounge, which is awesome. I have stayed at the Penninsula-- yes it is not convenient-- but for maybe $50 more you can stay in a totally different class of hotel. The Oriental is of course, the ultimate in service.. The rooms at the Westin were nice but nothing to write home about, again, if you compare them to the Oriental or the Penninsula. All in all, the Westin's location makes it convenient, but for a tourist with a family who is spending upwards of $220 a night for a hotel room, it just doesn't hit the mark.
