“Great hotel. Don't worry about being on the other side of the river”

I was a bit reluctant to stay at the Peninsula despite the favorable reviews and the Peninsula Group's reputation for great properties, but I decided to take the plunge and was extremely pleased with my decision. This is a great hotel. Impeccable service, great facilities, excellent food & beverage outlets, relaxing views across the river (in a city that is not exactly "relaxing). The hotel also has a very nice pool area with very attentive staff. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

With respect to location, some people have expressed concern about its location on the other side of the river from the Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, etc. This is really not an issue. The hotel has a shuttle boat that drops you off at the Skytrain station. The shuttle runs every 10 minutes, so you won't have to spend an excessive amount of time waiting on either side of the river. In fact, the ride across the river is quite pleasant.

Overall, I highly recommend this hotel and also feel that you get good value for money in comparison with some of the other luxury hotels in Bangkok.

“SO much to live up to”

It must be difficult to be one of the highest rated hotels in the world. Your reputation precedes you and the expectations are high. All in all the Peninsula does deliver and delivers well. But the secret to this success resides in it's ability to keep rates at an amount that gives it one of my highest value ratings of any hotel in the world. I mean where else can you get a suite for around $350.00 a night? (This with a check-in upgrade) The rooms are comfortable, although in previous stays in the regular rooms I felt them to be quite small (upgrade is worth it if available). Service is first-rate but the check-in process can be quite slow as they seem to coddle you through every process when what I often want is to get to my room as soon as possible after a 16 hour flight. Restaurants are first-rate and while the location is not the best in the city the free ferry service makes it reasonable and a fun way to get from point to point. My only criticism would be the concierges who are rather uninspired in their suggestions. While I would not rate The Peninsula as one of the top hotels in the world - it is certainly worthy of recognition given the affordability factor as one of the top bargains enabling most everyone to experience exceptional service.

“Service, Pool, Food - all great”

We arrived by one of the hotels cars from Bangkok Intl airport.
Easily greeted at the airport and check-in was a breeze (I think they knew we were coming.)
We stayed in the Deluxe Balcony Rooms. Nice and big. Heaps of room in the closet area for un-packing and packing. Bathroom was huge. Nice deep tub with tv.
The rooms had a very classic touch, not exactly my taste but it was really nice and the quality was there.
One gripe though - TV was crap. Small and seemed very old. The in-house movie system was pretty dated and remote wasn't very resposive.
In the 3 nights we were there we ate at the hotel both nights for dinner, crazy I know.
1st night ala -carte at the terrace, 2nd at Jesters, 3rd at the terrace again.
Let me just say that the Buffet at the terrace is the most amazing buffet i've ever seen and had. From memory it was $40 U.S. For that there was an amazing array of food. Sashimi, sushi, pasta, light thai curries. On the grill - Lobster tail! Squid, shellfish, sirloin steaks, lamb, pork, chicken all grilled to order.Nothing was over done, over portioned or had been sitting there long. It was precision run.

The pool is beautiful. Had a mens spa treatment which was pretty good. Not a spa kinda guy but it was nice.

Great stay. Would go back.

Quite possibly the best city hotel in the world. Everything impeccable - room, service, staff, restaurants, spa, transfers, concierge, pool. Words don't do the place justice. (And at about a quarter of the price you'd pay in London or New York!)

“Not THAT good”

We stayed at the Peninsula last year after having stayed at the Sheraton and The Oriental previously.

We decided to stay there because we'd read lots of good things about their nice rooms and technology. And this was true. But, compared to both the Sheraton and especially The Oriental - they lack a bit of charm. It's too big, and modern, there is not much Thai about it. We decided to spend one of our evenings at the Bamboo bar instead of eating in one of the restaurants at the Peninsula. The staff is professional and helpful, but lack... something that makes you feel special.

So in conclusion, it is a good hotel, very 5 star, but lack some of the charm of its older neighbors across the river.
