When a hotel receives as many ratings as the Oriental does, there are bound to be differing opinions, sometimes wildly so. Having recently (1 to 4 May) enjoyed my first stay at the Oriental, I'm firmly with fellow travelers who have praised the Oriental's overall excellence and given it 5 stars.
I contacted the hotel directly in order to get what turned out to be a very good (corporate) rate, which only made my stay, in a Superior River Wing room, all that much better. Unlike a few recent reviewers, I found my "standard" room supremely comfortable and beautifully appointed. The River Wing is old -- I think it's the part of the hotel that was built in 1958 -- but it's been very well maintained and updated. I particularly liked my bathroom, which was huge and finished in a lovely combination of multicolor marble and ceramic tiles. The floor was wood, another very welcome touch. The bathroom had a large, separate walk-in shower and huge soaking tub. The room had fresh flowers and plants throughout, and I found the wood and fabrics of the bed -- a one-piece, attractive sleigh with a real king boxspring and mattress set (as opposed to most hotels' pushed-together twin boxsprings) -- and other furniture most pleasing. The only so-so note struck in the room was the TV, which was an older tube model, but it worked perfectly well. Making up for the TV was a very smart Bose CD player and speaker system, which even included speakers in the bathroom.
As others have noted, the Oriental's staff and service standards are a high point: probably the best I've encountered at any hotel (with the possible exception of other Mandarin Oriental hotels). Staff anticipated every need -- and most wants -- and were always friendly and efficient. One evening, I came back to my room from an afternoon out, and my room had been made up for the evening. I went for a swim in the hotel pool, took a shower, dressed, and went out for dinner at the Oriental's lovely Thai restaurant, across the river. I had to return to the room to change into long pants (part of the hotel's dress code for all of its restaurants and bars in the evening), and when I did so, I found that the maids had come again, replaced my towels used for my shower, and refreshened the room. Now that's service.
The Oriental's common areas, from the lobby to the Authors' Wing to the swimming pools, are all attractive and atmospheric. I particularly liked the side-by-side regular and infinity swimming pools.
Overall, I found the Oriental's combination of history, ambience, and oustanding service unbeatable. It's the best hotel in Bangkok. Is it the best hotel in the world? Maybe. It's certainly on my very short list.
